The red-bellied woodpecker is an omnivore that eats a variety of insects and arthropods. It communicates using calls and drumming to attract mates. Females lay 4 eggs over 12 days, and the chicks hatch after another 12 days. The woodpecker is in the middle of its food chain, both eating and being eaten by other organisms. It does well in forested areas with trees for nesting and plenty of food sources.
