With a growing product portfolio and limited capacity to expand in Melbourne, the opportunity arose to build a testing capability in the Dell office in Zhuhai, in the Guangdong province of China. He's been working closely with this growing team of young inexperienced testers for the last two years. Collaborating with this enthusiastic offshore team has been a three-way challenge: dealing with cultural differences, overcoming the language barrier, and challenging the traditional software testing status quo. In this presentation, he will share his personal experience of collaborating with these young testers to develop a performance & creative context-driven testing team - the first time this had been attempted within this office in China. By sharing this experience, he hopes to highlight areas where offshore teams themselves can help those working with them, particularly across significant cultural divides.Recommended

Twelve Take Aways: Managing the Unmanageable. We'll look at 12 best practices that make programming managers great but take most managers years to discover. Expect an interactive session.
About 95 percent of programming managers had no management training before being tapped to manage. Ron Lichty and his co-author Mickey W. Mantle, both former programmers, didn't either.
About half of managers never get any training in managing. Ron and Mickey were lucky enough to work for companies like Apple and Pixar that provided some general management training. But little to none of it was specific to managing programmers, or to managing programming teams.
The struggle to manage programmers and programming teams motivated years of weekend breakfasts for Ron and Mickey, during which they traded insights - on the challenges they faced - and solutions they had used and seen - the kinds of stuff they’d wished they'd had when they started managing.

Abstract:
There are always people who want agile projects to fail. This will probably be the case until agile is the preferred process methodology used for projects. Are you one of them? In this workshop Bob Hartman will give participants a how-to guide for causing agile process failure. Attendees will learn various failure modes and how to cause them. There will be group discussions and exercises exploring how the failure modes can manifest themselves in real projects. At the end of this workshop each attendee should have the ability to cause agile project failure in a variety of ways and under a variety of conditions.
Obviously the first paragraph is a bit tongue-in-cheek. Hopefully project managers do not want agile projects to fail, but they need to know how they could fail. This knowledge will translate into an ability to recognize the failure modes and take corrective action. Interestingly, many of the agile project failure modes are also failure modes in other project process methodologies. All project managers on agile projects or in organizations that are considering using an agile process should attend this workshop. Project managers in organizations which typically struggle with projects may also gain insight into their project failure modes.

There can be little debate that Steve Jobs and Apple Inc. changed the ways in which people communicate over the past two decades. Although Jobs passed away in 2011, Apple's numerous innovative products have dramatically increased access to information of all types and made it easier for individuals to contact one another and interact with various businesses.
Creating and sustaining such an impactful company required quality communication skills. Jobs's career provides an example of the effective use of information and communication. His dramatic launches of new products in front of live audiences were well documented.
Jobs believed in several key principles. One involved being willing and able to say "no." He was personally responsible for stopping a project that would have created a device similar to a Palm Pilot, concentrating instead on developing the iPod and iPhone. Jobs strived for simplicity in communication and in all Apple products. He also maintained small groups in order to effectively facilitate various activities (Qualman, 2011).
While many hailed and praised Jobs's approach to communication, critics also emerged. One coworker noted that "The highs were unbelievable. . .but the lows were unimaginable" (Dumaine & Berlin, 1983). Jef Raskin, a former colleague, once said that Jobs "would have made an excellent King of France" due to his compelling and larger-than-life persona (Appleyard, 2009).
A major communication challenge occurred when Jobs became ill and was forced to first take a leave of absence and then to step down as CEO of Apple. Several health concerns caused him to take temporary leaves starting in 2004, and for the most part his absence was shrouded in a level of secrecy in order to maintain his personal privacy while preserving the appearance that the company remained strong and vibrant. After Jobs's first absence due to illness was announced, the company's stock immediately dropped in value. When he returned, several observers noted that his once-dynamic speeches had become listless and lacked energy. Issues with his pancreas and later a liver transplant created these complications (Wingfield, 2011). Jobs permanently stepped down on August 24, 2011. The announcement led to audible groans from his audience. When Jobs died later that year, industry analysts wondered how the loss of such a dynamic innovator and communicator would impact Apple for the foreseeable future.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
