Spain transitioned from a monarchy to a republic from 1902 to 1936. In 1923, General Primo de Rivera led a military coup and established a dictatorship, closing parliament and suspending elections. Republicans won elections in 1931 and established reforms, angering conservatives who supported a military coup in 1936 starting the civil war. General Franco ended democracy in 1936, establishing a dictatorship that lasted until 1975. After Franco died, Spain transitioned to democracy, establishing a constitution in 1978 that made Spain a parliamentary monarchy guaranteeing citizens' rights.
A Century of Great Change
Spain transitioned from monarchy to republic between 1902 and 1936. General Primo de Rivera established a dictatorship in 1923 after leading a military coup. Elections in 1931 led to a democratic republic, but conservative opposition supported a military coup led by generals Franco and Mola in 1936, beginning the Spanish Civil War. Franco ended democracy in 1939 and established a nearly 40-year dictatorship, abolishing the republican constitution and persecuting opponents. After Franco died in 1975, Spain transitioned to democracy, establishing a parliamentary monarchy and guaranteeing citizens' rights with a new constitution that held the first democratic elections in 1977.

- 2. Fresh water Most fresh water is found in ice, in lakes and rivers or under the surface of the Earth.

- 4. WATER CYCLE The movement of water from the Earth to the atmosphere and from the atmosphere to the Earth is called the water cycle.
- 5. THE HYDROGRAPHY OF SPAIN A drainage basin is an area of land water drains into a sea or an ocean. The Iberian Peninsula has three drainage basins: the Cantabrian, the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.
- 6. THE RIVERS The rivers of the Cantabrian drainage basin. They are short rivers with a lot of water and regular flow. The rivers of the Atlantic drainage basin are long rivers with little water and irregular flow. The rivers of the Mediterranean drainage basin. The are long rivers with very little water and irregular flow.
