Mexico's war on drugs was officially decreed by then President Felipe Calderon, but has existed in
some form since long before that. In the 1920s a law was drafted that deemed drugs and drug
trafficking to be of the highest priority for national security. Throughout time, Mexico has a history
of very strict drug enforcement laws, stemming from the issue being one of national security.

The Pearl of the World is a symbol of hope and new chance when the story begins, buts its meaning
and purpose are completely redesigned throughout the book. When he first finds the pearl, Kino
dreams of what the pearl will bring to him, but doesn't realize that it could bring him to his downfall.
Later on, it is realized that the pearl has brought more evil into his life than good, but Kino refuses

The book The Pearl takes place in a small fishing village in La Paz, Mexico. The main characters
are from an Indian tribe that live on the beach in brush houses, since Spaniards have kicked them
out of their homes. There is a poor fisherman named Kino, his wife Juana, and their son Coyotito.
One day Coyotito gets stung by a scorpion, but the family cannot support the cost of the treatment,
so they go and try to find a pearl to then sell. When looking in the water, Kino finds a magnificent,
shiny, big, and beautiful pearl. However, when going to sell it Kino does not like the prices the pearl
buyers will buy it for, so he decides he will cross the sea and the mountains to the Capital. I think
what drives Kino through the book is a fear of the amount of money he will earn, being cheated with
the value of the pearl, and Juana and Coyotito's safety from attackers/trackers. To begin, what drives
Kino is fear of not getting the correct amount of money he needs from the pearl to supply all the
things he desires. First of all, this is because Kino explains that the pearl is worth more than what
the pearl buyers are willing to pay for it. The first pearl buyer says, "I can give you, say, a thousand
pesos.' Kino's face grew dark and dangerous. 'It is worth fifty thousand,' he said" (50). He later says

Personal Narrative: My First International Trip To Baja...
I've served in soup kitchens and saw the smiles on people's faces but nothing has really shown me
the huge impact I can truly make until I had the opportunity to travel to Baja California last Spring
Break. Interact is a by product of Rotary, a community service club with a focus on international
service. At the time I was president elect at the time selected the top 12 students with the most hours
in service to travel on the trip. We had no idea what we would encounter, as it was the first

The Chuckwallas and Evolutionary Research
Ever since Charles Darwin's first publication of "On the Origin of Species" in 1859, island habitats
have been used by a number of scientists as the most efficient laboratories to observe the natural
process of evolution taking place in modern–day organisms. Several kilometers northeast of the
Galapagos Islands, where Darwin famously performed his research, is a small group of islands in
the Sea of Cortés, also known as the Gulf of California, between the Baja California peninsula and
Mexico (see Figure 1 on page 18). Here many evolutionary biologists of the 20th and 21st century
performed research on the insular organisms inhabiting these island habitats. One group of lizards in
particular known by the common name chuckwallas has gained a lot of focus in evolutionary
research.
Chuckwallas is the name of organisms in the Sauromalus genus apart of the Iguanidae family. They
are herbivorous lizards commonly found in the deserts of southwestern United States and Northern
Mexico. Three species, in particular, are found on the islands off the cost of the mainland within the
Sea of Cortés: Sauromalus obesus (= ater), Sauromalus varius, and Sauromalus hispidus (see Figure
2 on page 20). S. obesus is a common species found on the mainland as well as few islands, while S.
varius are S. hispidus are endemic to specific islands in the Sea of Cortés: mainly San Esteban

Squirt is the son of Crush from the 2003 Disney/Pixar film Finding Nemo. He's unlike any sea turtle
before. Sea turtles normally don't interact with others, but Squirt is the exact opposite. He is a perky,
playful sea turtle that idolizes his father Crush. He has inherited his dad's fearless and easy–going

Although out of fear or ignorance, some believe that sharks serve zero purpose, sharks are worth
more alive than dead because sharks stabilize the underwater ecosystem, and increase economic

not true. With increasing levels of pollution entering into the oceans it's known that sharks absorb
the pollution which create an unsafe level of mercury for humans to consume. Scientists at the
University of Miami recently conducted a study to test the concentrations of two toxins– mercury
and β–N–methylamino–L–alanine (BMAA) – in 10 different sharks species located in the Atlantic

author of the study and a Professor of Neurology stated, "Recent studies have linked BMAA to

The Pearl, written by John Steinbeck, takes place in La Paz Mexico. The begins with a description
of the family in the first few pages of the book. The family consists of, a couple, and one toddler.
Juana, the wife of Kino, and mother of Coyotito.
After the description of the family, the book continues with a scary problem. Coyotito is sleeping
and as he is sleeping, Kino notices a scorpion crawl down the rope that is connected to the hanging
box Coyotito lies on. Kino attempts to catch the scorpion but Coyotito moves and makes the
scorpion fall on him. Although, Kino eventually kills the scorpion, sadly Coyotito was still stung by
the scorpion.
The couple and a couple of neighbors, rush Coyotito to the local doctor. The doctor refused to treat
Coyotito because the family could not afford to treat Coyotito. Kino and Juana leave the doctors and
take Coyotito down near the sea, where Juana uses a seaweed poultice on Coyotito's shoulder, which
is now swollen. Kino then jumps from his canoe for oysters in an attempt to find pearls. Kino
eventually finds a surprisingly large oyster. When he opens the oyster, he soon finds out there is a
large pearl that is worth more than he can count.
Reading through the book, I noticed that they rarely used figurative language. Let's be honest,
figurative language is way more entertaining then with a book or passage with no figurative
language. The book is still well written with an entertaining plot in my opinion and maybe there is
figurative language but I haven't noticed since the book is over 50 years old. Let's get back to the
story.
Kino puts back his head and howls, causing the other pearl divers to look up and race toward Kino's
canoe.
Soon, everyone in La Paz finds out that Kino has found such an amazing pearl. The doctor who
refused to treat Coyotito decides to visit Kino. Kino's neighbors begin to feel bitter toward him for
his good fortune, but neither Kino nor Juana realize this feeling they have engendered.
Kino's brother, Juan Thomas, asks Kino what he will do with his fortune. Kino responded saying he
will probably use it for a wedding in a church. He claims that he will send Coyotito to

Kino and Juana headed towards the forest as the soundless night grew and they knew that some evil
person would follow and eventually kill them. Coyotito was still sound asleep and Juana hung him

heard footsteps and he knew that someone was following them. They heard the click of the carbine
and figured that they had to hide before the devil fired. They ran until they were sure that no one
was there but they didn't know that everyone wanted the pearl and they would do anything for it.

Both of John Steinbeck's literary creations*,"Of Mice and Men" and "The Pearl" have many
similarities that I will now discuss. First off, a very clear similarity in both literary creations is when
a character who is placing a burden on other main characters is killed. Further, in both, if these
literary creations, the killings took place at the end of the creation. Next, in both of these literary
creations, the main characters are not well off; in fact, they are both poor. This is proved in "The
Pearl" by having Kino's family live in a brush hut. Another point to point to support this would be
that Kino's family could not afford a doctor. Moreover, they were so poor that there was not even a

Contemporary Photographers : Environmental Issues And...
In the preceding chapter, I demonstrated how contemporary photographers take advantage of
innovative ways to tell stories, alert the public about environmental issues and spark engagement.
This chapter furthers the discussion by exploring current trends in environmental activism ranging
from the modest to extreme opportunities for engagement beyond traditional media. Nowadays,
photographers, environmental advocates, and NGOs reorient public perceptions about
environmental issues through unique and creative experiences that have expanded to the web, and
lately to social media and emerging digital platforms. In the first part of the chapter, I focus on
coordinated efforts of photographers and environmentalists working to resolve problems affecting
the global community. The next section considers voices outside the mainstream also working to
make known the overwhelming issues facing planet Earth. Following this, I turn to partnerships
between environmentalists, NGOs, and celebrities that drive media and the public's attention to
environmental causes. The last part of the chapter considers a new trend of environmental activism
through art.

I Am Of Those Who Believe We All Have A Mission
I am of those who believe that we all have a mission in this world, and we are born and grow to
complete it. I discovered at a very young age that my vocation in life is to serve and help people,
and as time passed by, I realized that the way to accomplish this was trough medicine, my true
calling.
It was a warm April Sunday morning, my family and I were headed to church. As usual, we were
late, so we had to sit in the last rows of the temple. As the priest was giving the homily, we heard a
loud noise coming from a few rows to our side. It was a man sitting a few feet away from us that
had just collapsed. People of course started panicking, asking for help, a crowd started to form
around the men. I can't explain what exactly went through my head, a rush of thoughts and
emotions. What I distinctly remember is a voice inside my head saying "help him, you can do it, you
know how, help him". I ran to where he was, asked my brother to dial 911, as I got near him, I
started assessing for vital signs, taking in consideration my only previous health training was as
medical assistant, I realized this man needed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), so I started with
chest compressions. My hands were shaking, my heart racing, nevertheless I was sure of what I was
doing. What felt like hours were only a few minutes, until paramedics came in and took over. I did
not get the name of the person I helped save, what I did get was a "Thanks, God bless you" from the
