While online programs have significant strengths and offer
unprecedented accessibility to quality education, there are weaknesses
inherent in the use of this medium that can pose potential threats to the
success of any online program. These problems fall into six main categories:
TechnologyEquity and Accessibility to Technology
Before any online program can hope to
succeed, it must have students who are able to access the online learning
environment. Lack of
access whether it be for economical or logistics reasons will exclude
otherwise eligible students from the course. This is a significant
issue in rural
and lower socioeconomic neighborhoods. Furthermore, speaking from an
administrative point of view, if students cannot afford the technology
the institution
employs, they are lost as customers. As far as Internet accessibility
is concerned, it is not universal, and in some areas of the United
States and other countries, Internet access poses a significant cost to
the
user.
Some users pay a fixed monthly rate for their Internet connection, while
others are charged for the time they spend online. If the participants’ time
online is limited by the amount of Internet access they can afford, then
instruction and participation in the online program will not be equitable
for all students in the course. This is a limitation of online programs
that rely on Internet access.Computer Literacy
Both students and facilitators must possess a minimum level
of computer knowledge in order to function successfully in an online environment.
For example, they must be able to use a variety of search engines and be
comfortable navigating on the World Wide Web, as well as be familiar with
Newsgroups, FTP procedures and email. If they do not possess these technology
tools, they will not succeed in an online program; a student or faculty
member who cannot function on the system will drag the entire pro.

Distance learning provides greater educational opportunities by allowing students to learn remotely using online resources. It offers flexibility so students can learn while working or managing other responsibilities. There are both synchronous courses that require simultaneous participation and asynchronous courses that are more self-paced. While distance learning has benefits like lower costs, flexibility, and access to more school choices, it also has drawbacks like lacking social interaction and requiring adaptability to new technologies. Some employers also do not accept online degrees.

Designing Competency-Based Self-Paced Online Workshops for Introducing Facult...Jason Rhode
Northern Illinois University developed competency-based self-paced online workshops to introduce faculty to online teaching technologies as part of their online faculty certification process. The workshops allow faculty to learn about online teaching at their own pace through online modules that cover identified technology competencies. The self-paced model makes the training scalable and flexible and accommodates faculty with different experience levels and availability. The workshops are designed to be mobile-optimized and publicly available without logins so faculty can access just-in-time learning resources.
Technology is having a major impact on education and training delivery. 24% of companies have a separate e-learning budget and 18% pay trainers from the IT department budget. The most used technology is the internet/intranet. 60% of online learning is self-paced via web courses and 32% uses CD-ROM/DVD. 80% of companies create their own e-learning content and 56% offer it to all employees. E-learning reduces costs, increases effectiveness, and helps training contribute to goals through multimedia, cyber learning, expert systems, and electronic support systems.
E-learning is having several effects on higher educational institutions:
1) It is facilitating a more flexible learning approach and helping to combat inflexible organizational structures as technology improves knowledge storage and learning techniques.
2) Universities must have flexible organizational structures to accommodate the changing role of lecturers and more flexible learning environments that e-learning requires.
3) E-learning is being used as a strategic tool to help universities compete in a global market and support strategic objectives like facilitating online discussions.

Video conferencing allows for two-way audio and video communication between multiple locations but it has some drawbacks. It is not easy for learners to access and use due to technical issues they may face. The technology also has a high cost structure due to the various devices needed like cameras, microphones, and routers. For a 1.5 hour session, costs can range from $448 to $468 per student. While content can be easily adapted, learners need training to effectively use video conferencing since it may present difficulties for their learning.

THE SACRIFICE HOW PRO-PALESTINE PROTESTS STUDENTS ARE SACRIFICING TO CHANGE T...indexPub
The recent surge in pro-Palestine student activism has prompted significant responses from universities, ranging from negotiations and divestment commitments to increased transparency about investments in companies supporting the war on Gaza. This activism has led to the cessation of student encampments but also highlighted the substantial sacrifices made by students, including academic disruptions and personal risks. The primary drivers of these protests are poor university administration, lack of transparency, and inadequate communication between officials and students. This study examines the profound emotional, psychological, and professional impacts on students engaged in pro-Palestine protests, focusing on Generation Z's (Gen-Z) activism dynamics. This paper explores the significant sacrifices made by these students and even the professors supporting the pro-Palestine movement, with a focus on recent global movements. Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications. The researchers also explore the broader implications of student sacrifices. The findings reveal that these sacrifices are driven by a profound commitment to justice and human rights, and are influenced by the increasing availability of information, peer interactions, and personal convictions. The study also discusses the broader implications of this activism, comparing it to historical precedents and assessing its potential to influence policy and public opinion. The emotional and psychological toll on student activists is significant, but their sense of purpose and community support mitigates some of these challenges. However, the researchers call for acknowledging the broader Impact of these sacrifices on the future global movement of FreePalestine.
