The unexpected revolution in the underbridge access
1. the unexpected revolution in underbridge access:
totally new method
for going Down & Under
SAIA Annual Convention, Montreal, 23-26 July 2017 1/18(author: Anna Meldner)
innovative, mobile, edge mounted, stabilized underbridge access platforms
2. What is currently available for inspection, maintenance and work to the
underside of bridges/structures:
(in a specific situation - lack of access from beneath)
2/18SAIA Annual Convention, Montreal, 23-26 July 2017
3. WORKING PHASE:
• Suspended counterweight moved off the bridge direction.
• Gravity induced pushing force transferred via bumpers.

MOVING PHASE; FREE HANGING PLATFORM:
• Suspended counterweight moved towards the bridge.
• The bumpers do not touch the bridge.

Counterweight
The centre of gravity of the
whole suspended platform is
moved away from equilibrium
position to induce “pendulum
effect”
Centre of gravity od the whole
platform falls exactly under the
suspension point
(equilibrium position)

4. If the ‘Safe working load’ is
exceeded the ‘fail safe’
position of the platform is to
hang freely from the structure.
It will not tip over and fall.
NO TIPPING OVER!
WORK COMFORT & NO RESTRICTIONS TO TRAFFIC:
• The platform is totally stable and safe
• Normal traffic on the bridge or other works in the same time

5. MINIMAL STRIP OF DECK NEEDED FOR MOUNTING:
• The mounting rail close to the deck edge.

9. Innovative Method of Stabilizing the Suspended Underbridge Platforms
This method could be applied to the most of the existing types of plants

STABILIZED WORKING POSITION:
• Suspended counterweight displaced to push the platform against
the bridge.
• Gravity pushing force induced by moving the center of gravity off
the equilibrium position.
• The bumpers transfer the pushing force onto the bridge structure.

MOVEMENT PHASE, FREE HANGING PLATFORM:
• Suspended counterweight is placed in the position to swing
the platform away from the bridge structure.
• The bumpers do not touch the bridge.

Innovative, suspended, mobile, edge-mounted underbridge access platform
SSS – EAP2
this mode of work could be applied to other rigid suspended structures
12. Can we use such platforms when doing other phases of refurb or
concrete work?

13. Can we... ?
Yes, we can.

Segments of the movement
rail are raised above the
reinforcement bars
As you see, there is a possibility of placing the platform movement rail above the reinforcement – if needed
