For each interview, use the
double-entry or dialogic notebook
technique*. As the term implies, you are engaging in
a dialogue with a text; in a sense, you will be “talking back” to the work.
What I want you to do is take a piece of notebook paper and fold it in half length-wise, so you have two columns. Now, draw a line where the fold is, and you have two sides of the paper to make notes on, or have a conversation.
On the left side, you can take notes, including facts, interesting or important quotes (don't forget the page number if pertinent), unfamiliar terms, connections to other works, and so on.
Essentially, you make a note of anything that strikes you as important or interesting about the piece.
Once you've finished reading the work, go back and look at your notes. Use the right side of the paper to comment on them. What
do your notes mean? What do they reveal about the text’s meaning or significance? Why do you think this particular line caught your attention? How can you use this information in your own writing and in class discussions? This is where you should develop your critical questions.
Dialogic notebooks can be used in any number of ways:
You can write down a quote on the left (with the page number and title, so you don't forget!) and your thoughts/analysis of the quote on the right
You can compare and contrast two sources or stories; you can write sources that support your thesis on one side, and sources that act as counter-arguments on the other
You can ask questions one one side, and then explore the answers in your notes on the other side-- or words you need to look up and then their definitions.
Really, you can benefit from using a dialogic notebook in any class where reading is important. It can help increase your understanding and appreciation of texts, and can be
invaluable in helping you write papers, improve your vocabulary and prepare for tests.

Scenario 1: Criminal Law
Hank's Hunting & Fishing Supply, with stores located throughout the state of Utopia, sells a wide variety of sporting goods, including guns. Section 323.45 of the Utopia Penal Code requires every seller of guns to verify that the purchaser has not committed a felony in any state within the past five years. If the purchaser has committed a felony within the past five years, the seller is not allowed to complete the sale. Selling a gun to a felon is considered a misdemeanor and is punishable by up to one year in jail and/or a maximum $10,000 fine.
Wayne Carver, who was convicted of a felony under Utopia's penal code four years ago, purchased a gun at one of the Hank stores. Mel Loew, a salesman, sold Carver the gun without asking for identification or checking Carver's criminal background. Loew never checked whether any of the customers to whom he sold guns were felons. He was not aware of the law requiring him to check on every customer's prior criminal history. However, Warren Peace, Loew's supervisor, knew of the law and also knew that Loew never checked whether a customer was a felon. Hank, the sole shareholder and director of Hank's Hunting & Fishing Supply, knew about the law but did not know that Loew did not check on any customer's prior criminal history.
Carver used the gun in a bank robbery and shot a police officer and a bystander during his getaway. Carver has not been apprehended.

This assignment asks you to apply geographical concepts to your life and to the world around you. The assignment requires both primary and secondary research. You will write three short “journal entries,” an introduction, and a conclusion (plus a bibliography).
You will select three units from the course outline to focus on (e.g. urban geography, cultural geography, etc.). For each unit you will choose a small site (e.g. a playground, shop, public square, school, café, living room, temple, theatre, park) in Metro Vancouver and apply the concepts and vocabulary from the unit (readings + lectures) to your observations at the location. To do this, you must visit the place and spend at least one hour closely observing (looking, listening, smelling, touching, making sketches, taking photos, and possibly speaking to people)
and taking notes
. You will use your observations to illustrate the concepts/vocabulary from the unit you selected. At the same time, you are using geographical concepts to help you understand what you observe. You will record your reflections and observations in a journal entry. Your journal entry will connect the location and your observations to the concepts in the unit. Do not take anything for granted! As you will discover, even apparently minor features (a table, a photograph, a tree, a plaque, a glass of milk, a lamp, mementos, a bee) are important. Look for relationships between space, place, identity, and power. How can geographic concepts help you understand such interactions? Although your analysis will take into account landscape and humans (as well as other living beings), you may choose to focus on landscape/objects or human behaviour (rather than both).

You will not be able to cover everything in the unit, but at least 2-3 key terms/concepts. Indicate the date and time of your observation. Begin with a description of the place you observed, and then move into your analysis. Be sure to define the geographical concepts you use. If your paper contains maps, pictures or diagrams, label them clearly and refer to them in the text.
For each journal entry you must also do some outside research using at least one scholarly source. You will use the scholarly source to add depth to your analysis and to incorporate what other scholars have said about the topics you are discussing. In addition to scholarly sources, you may use popular sources (e.g. website, novel, newspaper, movie) if you wish. Any time you use an idea from somebody else you must cite the source. If aliens and UFOs exist, why haven't they announced their presence in an incontrovertible fashion? Some of the most intriguing evidence comes in the form of the government's belated and somewhat bizarre explanations for UFO sightings and the alleged Roswell incident. On June 25, 1997, the Air Force announced that the mysterious happenings in the New Mexico desert in the late 1940s and 1950s were in fact experiments involving crash dummies and weather balloons. Six weeks later, on August 3, 1997, the CIA “admitted” that the U.S. government had lied about alleged UFO sightings in the 1950s and 1960s to protect classified information regarding top-secret spy planes, the U-2 and SR-71. Why did the government suddenly attempt to explain these mysteries after all these years? And why does there appear to be contradictory testimony from different parts of the government? Hank's Hunting & Fishing Supply, with stores located throughout the state of Utopia, sells a wide variety of sporting goods, including guns. Section 323.45 of the Utopia Penal Code requires every seller of guns to verify that the purchaser has not committed a felony in any state within the past five years. If the purchaser has committed a felony within the past five years, the seller is not allowed to complete the sale. Selling a gun to a felon is considered a misdemeanor and is punishable by up to one year in jail and/or a maximum $10,000 fine.
Wayne Carver, who was convicted of a felony under Utopia's penal code four years ago, purchased a gun at one of the Hank stores. Mel Loew, a salesman, sold Carver the gun without asking for identification or checking Carver's criminal background. Loew never checked whether any of the customers to whom he sold guns were felons. He was not aware of the law requiring him to check on every customer's prior criminal history. However, Warren Peace, Loew's supervisor, knew of the law and also knew that Loew never checked whether a customer was a felon. Hank, the sole shareholder and director of Hank's Hunting & Fishing Supply, knew about the law but did not know that Loew did not check on any customer's prior criminal history.
Carver used the gun in a bank robbery and shot a police officer and a bystander during his getaway. Carver has not been apprehended.

Although many individuals have testified about alien encounters over the years, almost all scientific authorities have been extremely skeptical. They emphasize that all of the “evidence” is unsubstantiated, controversial, indirect, and murky—the markings of pseudoscientific fantasies. If aliens and UFOs exist, why haven't they announced their presence in an incontrovertible fashion? Some of the most intriguing evidence comes in the form of the government's belated and somewhat bizarre explanations for UFO sightings and the alleged Roswell incident. On June 25, 1997, the Air Force announced that the mysterious happenings in the New Mexico desert in the late 1940s and 1950s were in fact experiments involving crash dummies and weather balloons. Six weeks later, on August 3, 1997, the CIA “admitted” that the U.S. government had lied about alleged UFO sightings in the 1950s and 1960s to protect classified information regarding top-secret spy planes, the U-2 and SR-71. Why did the government suddenly attempt to explain these mysteries after all these years? And why does there appear to be contradictory testimony from different parts of the government? Be sure to include citations for quotations and paraphrases with references in APA format and style where appropriate.
