The solar system consists of nine known planets that orbit our Sun, though some think additional planets may exist beyond Neptune's orbit. The terrestrial planets Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars have rocky surfaces, while the gas giants Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are large planets composed primarily of gas. Small planetoids like asteroids exist between Mars and Jupiter, and comets occasionally pass close to the sun, forming bright tails that can be seen from Earth. Some scientists theorize that dinosaurs went extinct when a comet collided with Earth.
