The Seventh Crusade was led by Louis IX of France against Egypt in response to Jerusalem being lost. Louis and his French forces fought the Egyptians led by the Sultan. The crusade took place in various locations in Egypt in 1248. It ended in defeat for the French as the Egyptian army broke through and captured Louis, forcing him to pay ransom to be released. The failure of the crusade weakened the influence of the Pope and feudal nobility in Europe.
