The Second Great Awakening revived social activism and religious denominations in the early 19th century. It strengthened older denominations and sparked the formation of new ones. Circuit riders like Methodist and Baptist ministers with no formal schooling but a calling from God helped spread revivalism and evangelism through camp meetings and by traveling throughout the West.
