This case study describes how we leveraged serverless technology and the AWS serverless application model (SAM) to support the needs of virtual training classes for a major US Federal agency. Our firm was excited to be selected as the main training partner to help a major US Federal government agency roll out Agile and DevOps processes across an organization comprising more than 1500 people. And then the pandemic hit—and what was to have been a series of in-person classes turned 100% virtual! We created a set of fully populated docker images containing all of the test data, plugins, and scenarios required for the student exercises. For our initial implementation, we simply pre-loaded our docker images into elastic beanstalk and then replicated them as many times as needed to provide the necessary number of instances for a given class. While this worked out fine at first, we found a number of shortcomings as we scaled up to more students and more classes. Eventually we came up with a much easier solution using serverless technology: we stood up a single page application that could kickoff tasks using AWS step functions to run docker images in elastic container service, all running under AWS Fargate. This application is a perfect fit for serverless technology and describing our evolution to serverless and SAM may help you gain insights into how these technologies may be beneficial in your situation.

Accelerating development velocity of production ml systems with docker

The rise of microservices has allowed ML systems to grow in complexity, but has also introduced new challenges when things inevitably go wrong. This talk dives into why and how Pinterest Dockerized the array of microservices that produces the Pinterest Home Feed to accelerate development and decrease operational complexity and outlines benefits we gained from this change that may be applicable to other microservice based ML systems. Most companies provide isolated development environments for engineers to work within. While a necessity once a team reaches even a small size, this same organizational choice introduces potentially frustrating dependencies when those individual environments inevitably drift. This project was initially motivated by challenges arising from the difficulty of testing individual changes in a reproducible way - without having standardized environments, pre-deployment testing often yielded non-representative results, causing downtime and confusion for those responsible for keeping the service up. The Docker solution that was eventually deployed pre-packages all dependencies found in each microservice, allowing developers to quickly set up large portions of the Home Feed stack, and always test on the current team-wide configs. This architecture enabled the team to debug latency issues, expand our testing suite to include connecting to simulated databases, and more quickly do development on our thrift APIs. This talk will feature tips and tricks for Dockerizing a large scale legacy production service and discuss how an architectural change like this can change how an ML team works.

RPA became one of the hottest technologies in the enterprise space because it can unlock tremendous amounts of value that’s sitting inside every company’s operations and administration. We have seen multiple billion-dollar companies being created in this space, and now it’s spreading beyond the enterprise to mid-market. With all the growth happening in RPA, there are many misconceptions, bold claims, and fluffy marketing around it. Instead of being an AI-powered magic wand for inexperienced automators, RPA is a set of developer tools and technologies that enable secure and reliable execution of bots across a mixed set of environments and tasks. It is, in fact, the perfect target for good old open-source disruption. This talk will explain the basics of RPA (hint: it’s not real robots but software) and make a case for open-source in this industry. We will also dive into the technology behind RPA, explore why Python is the perfect platform for building it, and highlight some of the technical challenges that we have had to overcome to build the largest open-source ecosystem in RPA.

Spark is an ETL and Data Processing engine especially suited for big data. Most of the time an organization has different teams working on different languages, frameworks and libraries, which needs to be integrated in the ETL Pipelines or for general data processing. For example, a Spark ETL job may be written in Scala by data engineering team, but there is a need to integrate a machine learning solution written in python/R developed by Data Science team. These kinds of solutions are not very straightforward to integrate with spark engine, and it required great amount of collaboration between different teams, hence increasing overall project time and cost. Furthermore, these solutions will keep on changing/upgrading with time using latest versions of the technologies and with improved design and implementation, especially in Machine Learning domain where ML models/algorithms keep on improving with new data and new approaches. One of the most well known descriptions of these new paradigms is the Twelve Factor App (12factor.net), which describes elements of cloud native applications. Many of these needs are squarely met through the Spring Framework, others require support from other systems. A technology is useless unless it is put to use. This is a crushingly obvious statement, but it does serve to remind us that a technology that never makes it out of a laboratory or an inventor’s basement might as well not exist. We have recently discussed the process by which technologies are introduced and then put into use. Here, we examine the method of diffusion, the process by which technologies make it into homes, factories, and so forth. In this assignment, you discuss how a CEO makes technological decisions and the rationale behind those thought processes. After reading the module notes and all supplemental materials, respond to following: Scenario: You are a CEO of well-established and profitable software technology firm that has a choice to invest in one of two new software technologies; one that promises modest profit with very little risk and another that may yield a very high profit but at considerable risk. Keeping in mind cultural factors (social values/priorities, politics, economy, technology, regulation, etc.) answer the following: What would your choice be? Who in your company might support the first technology and who might support the second? Think about individuals from all levels of the company, from the CEO and board members down to R&D personnel. What considerations of your decision need to be made from a societal perspective? Consider individuals outside of the company itself. How might the type of industry affect this type of decision? Support your position using appropriate sources that are properly cited. Your paper should be 2 pages in length (not including title and reference pages). zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex Proofs

This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second). Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management. The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
