3. Introduction:
Mango is an edible stone fruit produced by the tropical tree Mangifera indica
which is believed to have originated in the region between northwestern
Myanmar, Bangladesh, and northeastern India. Mangoes belong to the genus
Mangifera which consists of about 30 species of tropical fruiting trees. It has
been an important herb in Ayurveda and indigenous medical systems for over
4000 years. M. indica has been cultivated in South and Southeast Asia since
ancient times resulting in two distinct types of modern mango cultivars: the
"Indian type" and the "Southeast Asian type". Other species in the genus
Mangifera also produce edible fruits that are also called"mangoes", the
majority of which are found in the Malesian region.
Worldwide, there are several hundred cultivars of mango. Depending on the
cultivar, mango fruit varies in size, shape, sweetness, skin color, and flesh
color which may be pale yellow, gold, green, or orange. Mango is the national
fruit of India, Pakistan and the Philippines, and the national tree of
Bangladesh.
Manga is a large tree, with a dense and spreading crown. Leaves are oblong to
oblong-lanceolate, 10 to 30 centimeters long. The flowers are yellow, small, 3
to 4 millimeters long, borne on erect and hairy panicles, which are as often as
long as the leaves. The fruit is a drupe, of varying shades of yellow, fleshy,
oblong-ovoid,10 to 15 centimeters long, and slightly compressed, the skin is
thin, and in the center is a large flattened, fibrous seed, and when ripe,
surrounded by an edible yellow pulp.
It is a widely cultivated tree for its fruit, with several varieties in cultivation.
The most popular mango varieties are “katchamita/Indian”, "carabao" and
"piko". The Guimaras mango is now considered the sweetest of mango
varieties produced in the Philippines.
Etymology:
The English word mango (plural "mangoes" or "mangos") originated from the
Portuguese Word, manga, from the Malay Mangga, probably ultimately from
the Dravidian (Tamil) man ("mango tree") + kay ("fruit")

6. The Story: The Legend of Mangoes (English Version)
Original written: 2014 (Encoded in 2021)
Once upon a time, there was a little boy named Ben who had a wonderful
heart. He is the son of Maria and Juan. Ben’s a kind and helpful young lad
who was nurtured well by his parents who have good hearts as well.
One day, Ben saw a very old beggar and he took pity on him. So, Ben decided
to invite the old beggar into their humble home and he cooked food and fed
the old beggar until he could not eat anymore. Ben was not a rich boy but
that did not stop him from helping this old beggar by serving him with the
type of food that Ben’s family could only afford. After a sumptuous meal, the
beggar thanked the young lad and bade him farewell.
On another day, while Ben was looking for firewood, he passed by an old man
who was also very hungry. Ben took pity on him once more and without a
doubt in his mind, he invited the old man back to their home and gave him
food and some clothes that his father does not use anymore. Ben’s parents
were happy that they have a son who has a heart of gold like Ben.
Unfortunately, the time came that Ben suddenly got very ill. His parents were
troubled and didn’t know what to do. But despite that, they persisted to have
their son treated but to no avail, Ben died. His parents mourned over the loss
of their only son. The next day, after Ben’s death, a beautiful fairy came to
Ben’s wake and talked to his parents. She asked them to give her Ben’s heart.
They agreed and gave it to her. The fairy then flew away and in a mountain,
she dug and buried Ben’s, dead heart. It then turned into a fruit-bearing tree
whose fruits were in the shape of a heart and whose taste was so sweet.
People were amazed upon discovering this new type of fruit and when they
tasted it they were happy as it was the sweetest fruit they have ever tasted.
From then till now, people enjoy the benefits of this wonderful fruit.
Alamat ng Mangga (Tagalog Version)
Noon pa man ay
Kalabaw at Pahutan kaya tatawagin itong Manggang Kalabaw. Bagama't
mangga:
Pusong bibitin-bitin mabangong amuyin, Masarap kainin, lalo na't hinog.
