The Wendt Center for Loss and Healing has provided grief counseling in the Washington D.C. area for 40 years. In 1999, they launched their RECOVER Program which places grief counselors at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to help families dealing with sudden or suspicious deaths through the identification process and provides additional resources to help them cope with the trauma. The RECOVER Program supports individuals and families dealing with homicides, suicides, suspicious deaths and accidents.

2.  Over the course of its 40-year history in the
Washington, D.C., area, the Wendt Center for
Loss and Healing has provided grief counseling
services for individuals across the region. In
1999, the organization implemented the
RECOVER Program, an innovative initiative
designed to support individuals and families
dealing with sudden deaths due to homicide,
suicide, death by suspicious causes, and
accidents. These types of deaths often require
a visit to the Office of the Chief Medical
Examiner (OCME), which can be highly
traumatic.

3.  In order to help families visiting the OCME,
the Wendt Center for Loss and Healing
places highly trained grief counselors on-
site to guide individuals through the
identification process. The RECOVER
Program supplements its on-site counseling
with resources that can help families cope
with the anger and sadness associated with
traumatic loss.
