1) Fernão Lopes was a Portuguese nobleman who betrayed his country and collaborated with Muslims in 1512 in Goa, India. As punishment, he was tortured and left maimed.
2) In 1516, Lopes stowed away on a ship to Portugal but feared punishment, so he hid when they stopped at the uninhabited island of Saint Helena. He became the first resident of the island.
3) Lopes lived alone on the island for over 10 years, surviving with supplies left by passing ships. He was eventually discovered by the captain Pero Gomez Teixeira and agreed to help future sailors.
