Rama, Laskhmana, and Viswamithra travel to Mithila where Rama and Janaka's daughter Sita see each other from afar and feel an instant attraction. The next day at the assembly hall, Janaka offers Sita's hand in marriage to Rama, who proves himself by stringing and breaking Shiva's bow. A quick wedding and celebration follows, where Rama and Sita are united though they appear as strangers in their mortal forms, having been together previously as the divine beings Vishnu and Lakshmi in heaven.

When Pyramus discovered the cloak, he mistakenly believed Thisbe was dead and killed himself; upon returning, Thisbe found Pyramus dying and also took her own life, so that they could be together in death. The tree that witnessed their love now bears fruit in their honor.

Years later, after their twin sons are discovered, Rama realizes Sita was truly pure and asks her to return, but she instead departs into the earth. Rama is told he will be reunited with Sita as the gods Vishnu and Lakshmi in the afterlife.

Rama is the eldest and favorite. He marries Sita. Later, Rama is exiled from the kingdom for 14 years due to the scheming of his stepmother, despite being the rightful heir. Sita and Lakshmana accompany him. Bharata refuses to rule in Rama's place while he is in exile.

Ravana kidnaps Sita after being tricked by Maricha into thinking Rama has been killed. Hanuman finds Sita and gives her Rama's ring. Rama and the monkey army prepare to face Ravana in battle. Rama defeats and kills Ravana after several battles. Sita passes a trial by fire to prove her purity, but Rama still doubts her and exiles her again. Years later, after their twin sons are discovered, Rama realizes Sita was truly pure and asks her to return, but she instead departs into the earth. The Ramayana-Chapter 2
- 1. Translation: R.K. Narayan THE RAMAYANA CHAPTER 2 “THE WEDDING”
- 2. PLOT Rama, Laskhmana, and Viswamithra travel to Mithila to meet the King of Janaka. Sita, the King’s daughter, and Rama’s eyes meet from afar and they feel in instant attraction. They do not speak to each other and do not know who each other are. The next day, Rama, Laskhmana, and Viswamithra go to the assemblyhall to meet the King of Janaka who is immediately taken by Rama, wanting him to marry his daughter. Rama strings the bow of Shiva and breaks it in the process, granting him the King’s daughter. A wedding and celebration quickly follows and they both marry.

KEY QUOTES/SCENES “They had been together not so long ago in Vaikunta, their original home in heaven, as Vishnu and his spouse Lakshmi, but in their present incarnation, suffering all the limitations of mortals, they looked at each other as strangers.” (23) Rama strings the bow in order to marry the King of Janaka’s daughter and breaks it in half. “Now I return to you Rama and Lakshmana. Their achievements are immeasurable, but there is much more ahead...” (32)
