The promise of the Holy Spirit is a gift for all who believe. It is the promise of a Person coming to be in us and with us, bringing with Him all His power and ability for our benefit and making us effective in accomplishing what God wants us to do.
8. And it shall come to pass in
the last days, says God,
That I will pour out of My
Spirit on all flesh…
9. On one occasion, while he was
eating with them, he gave them this
command: “Do not leave Jerusalem,
but wait for the GIFT MY FATHER
PROMISED, which you have heard
me speak about.”
10. “For John baptized with water, but in
a few days you will be baptized with
the Holy Spirit.”
16. THE PROMISE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
IS THE PROMISE OF
A PERSON COMING TO BE WITH YOU
BRINGING YOU POWER
AND GIVING YOU THE ABILITY
TO ACCOMPLISH GOD’S WILL.

Sermon: The promise of the Holy Spirit
Introduction
In previous sermons we looked at Jesus’ invitation to drink the living water of the Holy Spirit and what it means to build friendship with Him. Today I want to speak about the promise of the gift of the Spirit.
Most people love to receive gifts. I particularly enjoy an appropriate gift. Can you see it in your mind’s eye? Not another pair of socks or book that you will never read, but a gift that is exactly what you need. Such a gift brings great delight and joy!
There is an age-old promise from God for exactly such a gift. It is the promise of the gift of the Holy Spirit for all those who believe in Jesus Christ. He is just the Gift we need!
Main points
The promise over time
The promise of the Holy Spirit was repeated through many ages. After Jesus ascended to heaven, the promise was finally fulfilled on the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit was poured out on the disciples.
One reference to this promise is recorded in Joel 2:28-29 and was quoted by Peter on the day of Pentecost:
‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God,
That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh …’
Acts 2:17a (NKJV)
Jesus also repeated this promise several times (John 14:15-17; 15:26; 16:13-14).
Finally, just before Jesus ascended to heaven He instructed His disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the fulfilment of this promise.
‘On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.”’
Acts 1:4 (NIV)
‘“For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”’
Acts 1:5 (NIV)
And then it happened! A mighty wind blew, tongues of fire rested on them and they were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues!
‘When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.’
Acts 2: 1-4 (NIV)
After they had received the gift of the Holy Spirit, Peter pointed out to the gathering crowd that “this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel …”
‘Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: ‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.’”’
Acts 2:14-17 (NIV)
2. What is promised?
This is a promise of a Gift. A gift is qualified as a gift by the fact that it is received freely. It is not earned or worked for. When you work for it, you receive payment, wages or a salary.
The Holy Spirit is the Gift from God. It is written with a capital letter, because it is the gift of a person. With this Person comes power which means divine enablement.
‘“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”’
Acts 1:8 (NIV)
This is a promise for all people – it is a non-discriminatory gift. It promises us as believers that we will be filled, and not only get a taste. It is a baptism or infilling with the very presence of God’s Spirit. The promise of the Holy Spirit and His power is not merely a commodity.
‘“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”’
Acts 1:8 (NIV)
It is the promise of a Person coming to be in you and with you, bringing with Him all His power and ability for your benefit and to make you effective in accomplishing what God wants you to do!
3. It’s a Father-thing
It is encouraging to know that the heart of our heavenly Father is behind this promise. Fathers want the best for their children. I have seen earthly fathers go to great extremes to give the best they can to their children, even at great personal cost.
The story of Cameron and his paralysed daughter Charlotte (3) illustrates this beautifully. Cameron designed a walking device that enables Charlotte to ‘walk’ with her father and it gives her great joy!
When Jesus referred to the gift of the Holy Spirit He explained:
‘“Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”’
Luke 11:11-13 (NIV)
You can have complete security that you have a heavenly Father who gives you the very best – the gift of His Spirit. The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead!
4. Knowing, growing, going
You need to know about this promise – it is for you as a believer.
Receiving the promise of the Holy Spirit sparks growing in our relationship with God and in godly skills. The Holy Spirit will cause growth in your life!
Finally, the Holy Spirit empowers us to go on God’s assignment.
It is time to KNOW, GROW and GO with the Holy Spirit.
Application
Have you received the promise? Have you had your own personal Pentecost?
Remember the invitation of Jesus to come and drink of the Spirit like you would drink a glass of cold water on a hot day.
In the natural, thirst is not something that is easily self-engineered. It comes as a result of heat, exertion of energy and natural need for fluid. In the spiritual realm it is much the same. You cannot decide by yourself ‘I am thirsty’. I believe spiritual thirst is the place of desperation and need that your spirit (heart) reaches, knowing that nothing else will satisfy except the living water of the Spirit. It is a place of discontentment with anything else offered. Nothing else will do!
This is what people asked on the day of Pentecost as they were pointed toward the gift of the Holy Spirit:
‘Peter’s words convicted them deeply, and they said to him and to the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?” Peter replied, “Each of you must turn from your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This promise is to you and to your children, and even to the Gentiles – all who have been called by the Lord our God.”’ (Emphasis added)
Acts 2:37-39 (NLT)
Prayer
Father, please make me more and more aware of my need for the Holy Spirit. I turn away from anything else I have considered to satisfy the need for You. Thank you for the Gift of Your Spirit. I look to You to fill me. Amen.
