‘He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.’ (Emphasis added)
Introduction
• Walking with Jesus is a huge privilege! It is therefore fitting to ask, ‘How should I walk with Jesus?’
• It is more than just a stroll – it is a walk of life filled with joy and purpose that can daily change and enhance you.
• Finding out how to walk with Jesus should be given high priority, and God’s Word gives us a clear starting point: ‘… walk humbly with your God.’
‘He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.’ (Emphasis added)
Micah 6:8 (NIV)
• Let us look at a few important things to keep in mind when walking with Jesus.
Main points
Walk humbly
• Walking in humility with Jesus has to be done willingly and without resistance or dispute. It speaks of being teachable, receptive and submissive.
• In practice it means to come into agreement with Him. The saying birds of a feather flock together is very true. Make the decision to stop disputing, questioning, arguing and second-guessing what God says. Do the correct and wise thing – humble yourself.
• As you walk in humility with Jesus it will affect a special promise in your life.
‘He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way.’ (Emphasis added)
Psalm 25:9 (NIV)
• You will be guided and taught His way when you walk humbly with Him.
2. Walk in step
• When you walk with Jesus, you need to adjust to His pace. Make it your aim to hear His voice. Staying close to Jesus and hearing His voice is what enables you to stay in step with Him.
• Stay in step – catch His pace!
• You can be encouraged to know that Jesus promises His people that they’ll hear His voice.
‘“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”’
John 10:27 (NIV)
• When it comes to pace, it is good to remember that He is never anxious or in a rush, but on the other hand, He is also never late. I have heard and personally experienced that if you want to catch up with God you need to slow down.
• Walking in step with Jesus safeguards you against being too slow or too fast, becoming distracted, or getting stuck in your journey of life.
• Let His unforced rhythms of grace set your pace.
‘“Walk with me and work with me – watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly.”’
Matthew 11:29-30 (MSG)
• We should move from being driven or demotivated to being lead and inspired by Him.
3. Walk respectfully
• The offer of Jesus to build friendship with Him should not be misinterpreted or lead to familiarity.
• He wants to be your friend in closeness and understanding but it does not change the fact that He is your Lord and God.
• The flipside of the coin is respect. As you respond to His invitation for friendship, it should cause you to walk in the greatest of respect toward Him. If this balance is disregarded you will start treating His Word as a mere suggestion.
• Respect translates to obedience and obedience is the forerunner of holiness!
• Respect Jesus by simply doing what He says. Show that you value God and respect what He says by being a doer of His Word!
‘But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.’
James 1:22 (NKJV)
4. Walk childlike
• Jesus greatly values a childlike attitude, in fact, I believe it is a very important requirement for walking with Him. What does it mean in practical terms?
• It is a walk of trust, filled with expectation. It means to willingly learn every day and to remain excited about the prospects of walking with Jesus.
• Get ready to take a walk on the wild side! Remember that you are walking with the Creator – the Source of all life. So expect variety and change. He is creative and will renew your walk every day.
• There is a fine balance between a healthy routine and something becoming monotonous and boring. If you walk with Jesus He will often surprise you. He may even make you laugh with His wonderful sense of humour!
• You do not have to look far to see humour in nature or animals!
Application
• If you walk with Him in the way you should, the walk will increase in intimacy, joy and purpose.
• Walk devotedly with Him – all the time, daily and intimately.
• The most important thing to remember is to walk with Him in love. Love Him with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. It’s a walk of love and that is exactly what He wants from you.
Prayer
‘Lord, I choose to humble myself before You. I choose Your way over mine. I trust and love You. Amen.’
