2. Security
Freedom from risk or
danger; to be safety.
“The ignorance of one voter in a
democracy impairs the security of
all”
John F. Kennedy
Liberty
The right and power to
act, believe, or express
oneself in a manner of
one's own choosing; no
one imposes you what to
do.
“When the people fear the
government, there is tyranny. When
the government fears the people,
there is liberty.”
Thomas Jefferson
3. Security and liberty are two of the most important things you expect
and search in life. There is no other place in which you will feel safer tan your
home, surrounded of people that care about you. The 11 of September of
2001, two airplanes invaded the privacy of the U.S. citizens and crashed the
planes into the World Trade Center. After this attack, people realized that they
were no longer safe in their own home. As a reaction to this and to guarantee
people security, the USA launched the PATRIOT Act. This act would fight
terrorism and blamed Al Qaeda for the incident. USA attacked the countries
of Afghanistan and Iraq in search of the terrorist Sadam Hussein. This was not
the last terrorist attack the USA suffered, lately there was a bombing in a
carrier in Boston, Massachusetts.
4. PATRIOT ACT
The USA PATRIOT Act (commonly known as the "Patriot Act") is an Act of
the U.S. Congress that was signed into law by President George W. Bush on
October 26, 2001. The Act dramatically reduced restrictions on law
enforcement agencies' ability to search telephone, e-mail communications,
medical, financial, and other records; eased restrictions on foreign intelligence
gathering within the United States; expanded the Secretary of the Treasury’s
authority to regulate financial transactions, particularly those involving foreign
individuals and entities; and broadened the discretion of law enforcement
and immigration authorities in detaining and deporting immigrants suspected
of terrorism-related acts. The act also expanded the definition of terrorism to
include domestic terrorism, thus enlarging the number of activities to which the
USA PATRIOT Act’s expanded law enforcement powers can be applied.
5. PATRIOT ACT OBJECTIVES
• The purpose of the USA PATRIOT Act is to try to prevent and punish terrorist acts in the
United States and around the world. This would be reached by incrementing the
investigation agencies efficiency.
• To strengthen U.S. measures to prevent, detect and prosecute international money
laundering and financing of terrorism
• To subject to special scrutiny foreign jurisdictions, foreign financial institutions, and
classes of international transactions or types of accounts that are susceptible to
criminal abuse;
• To require all appropriate elements of the financial services industry to report
potential money laundering;
• To strengthen measures to prevent use of the U.S. financial system for personal gain
by corrupt foreign officials and facilitate repatriation of stolen assets to the citizens of
countries to whom such assets belong.
6. CONCLUSION
The PATRIOT ACT is extremely because its encouraging the
discrimination towards the Middle East countries without having an accurate
proof that the responsible of the 9/11 were from one of this countries. We also
got to the conclusion that there can not be security and liberty at the same
time. This is supported as Dwight D. Eisenhower stated: “If you want total
security, go to prison. There you're fed, clothed, given medical care and so on.
The only thing lacking... is freedom.”
