Why did we do this topic? To learn about the past Olympics. To learn how the Olympics were during the 1920’s, while America was experiencing a superficial prosperity (Entertainment, Literature, Industries, etc. experienced major developments). To learn about how the games have changed over time.

Summer of 1920 Opening   ceremony: April 20 Closing   ceremony: September 12 Location:  Antwerp, Belgium Nations Participating: 29 Athletes participating:   2,626 (2,561 men, 65 women)  Known as “Games of the VII Olympiad”

Winter of 1924 The 1924 Winter Olympics were the first Winter Olympics that took place in Chamonix, France from January 25 th  – February 4 th. 16 different countries sent athletes to compete, resulting in 258 total athletes. There were only 16 different events: 4-man bobsled  Biathlon  Curling  Figure skating (men's, women's, pairs)  Hockey  Cross country Skiing (18k, 50k)  Ski jumping  Nordic combined skiing  Speed skating (500m, 1500m, 5000m, 10,000m, combined)
Winter of 1924 continued… Interesting Facts: The highest number of medals were awarded to Finland (11) and Norway (17); then US and Great Britain with 4; Austria, Switzerland, and France received 3; Sweden won 2; and Canada one. Canada’s only medal was won in hockey.  They defeated Switzerland 33-0, Czechoslovakia 30-0, Sweden 22-0, Great Britain 19-2, and finally they beat the United States 6-1to win the gold. Originally called the ’International Winter Sports Week’ so certain countries would attend. A week later the international ski committee called the games the official ‘Olympics’.

Summer of 1924 Location: Paris, France  Dates: May 4 th  to July 27 th 44 different nations participated 3,089 athletes competed; 135 women and 2,954 men 16 different sports/events were played
Summer of 1924 cont… Interesting Facts First Olympics where the three flags were raised; the Olympic flag, the host country’s flag, and the next Olympic host country’s flag. These Olympics were the last with tennis as an event until 1988. This was the first time athletes stayed in an Olympic Village, group of wooden cabins.
