The 1896 Summer Olympics, known as the first modern Olympics, were held in Athens, Greece. Around 300 athletes from 13 countries participated in 9 sports including athletics, cycling, fencing, gymnastics, shooting, swimming, tennis, weightlifting, and wrestling. The games were opened by King George I of Greece and marked the revival of international Olympic competition after nearly 1500 years. The highlight was Spyridon Louis of Greece winning the marathon, becoming the only Greek champion.
