The kakapo is a large, flightless and nocturnal parrot found only in New Zealand. It has green feathers with black and yellow markings, a heavy body that can weigh up to 3 kg, and small wings that are used for balance rather than flight. Kakapos eat various plant materials like fruits, seeds, roots and fungi. They are critically endangered due to introduced predators like rats that eat their eggs and chicks, as well as habitat destruction. Conservation efforts are underway to help increase the kakapo population, which currently consists of less than 200 individuals.
