This document summarizes a study that analyzed content in three Nigerian newspapers (The Guardian, The Punch, and Niger Delta Standard) from July 2008 to June 2009 to examine if the newspapers advocated for peace in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, which has experienced over a decade of crisis due to infrastructural deprivation of the local people by the federal government. The analysis found that advocacy for peace in the Niger Delta by the newspapers was limited and they reported more on the violence of the crisis than solutions. The document provides background on the Niger Delta crisis and reviews concepts of media advocacy and agenda-setting to establish the role newspapers could play in advocating for peace through their content.
