The rise of streaming services and cord-cutting has changed how people watch TV but has not led to the end of traditional TV. While some households have cancelled cable subscriptions in favor of streaming options like Netflix, most viewers still subscribe to cable or use streaming services like Netflix as complements rather than replacements for traditional TV. The television industry has had to adapt to these changing viewing patterns by producing content that can thrive online, but television remains a popular shared cultural experience despite the rise of streaming alternatives.

Creative Social Presents - FUCK THAT'S GOOD 8 feb 2012Creative Social
This document provides a summary of a presentation on creative inspiration and storytelling. It discusses how stories are turning people on right now across many mediums like books, films, games, TV ads, and more. Stories can be told across different media channels, like a story that began with blogs, continued with digital displays, and ended on YouTube. The best stories are the ones people remember, especially older people who have lived longer and accumulated more stories. The presentation aims to find a great undiscovered story by interviewing older people in a beach town. It promotes harnessing creativity and social networks to make positive change in the world.
We are in an era of chaos. Understanding how to harness the opportunities and bring delight to your consumer will be imperative to your brand's survival.
The document summarizes Chris Anderson's theory of the "long tail" which argues that the internet is enabling a large amount of specialized creativity and commerce in niche interests and obscure products that would not be economically viable through traditional mass media channels. It provides examples of how online retailers like Amazon and media platforms are able to profitably cater to demand across a wide range of less popular and obscure products rather than just bestsellers and blockbusters. However, some argue that most profits still come from a small number of popular hits while long tail products make little individual impact.

Modern Day Technologies: Changing the Way Millennials Consume Television Emily Maniquet
Millennials are consuming television differently than older generations by watching shows online and on-demand instead of watching live TV. They are less likely to have cable subscriptions and instead use streaming services like Netflix, which they can access anytime, anywhere on multiple devices. This is causing challenges for the television industry as cord-cutting, cord-shaving, and cord-nevering become more common, and viewers expect to be able to access all content individually rather than through bundled cable packages. To adapt, the television industry will likely offer smaller, personalized content bundles and focus on providing access across all devices.

This document discusses the rise of citizen journalism through the use of camera phones and how "we media" has made the contemporary media landscape both more and less democratic. It provides examples of how camera phones have enabled ordinary people to bear witness to important events and distribute these images widely, democratizing information flow. However, it also notes their overuse in socially unacceptable situations that disrupt others' experiences and how they can spread images without consent. On balance, camera phones have empowered individuals as citizen journalists but also enable new forms of distraction and invasion of privacy.

Social media allows everyone to broadcast their thoughts and participate in global conversations. This represents a shift from traditional one-directional publishing to many-to-many communication. To be successful, brands must listen to what is being said about them on social media, analyze who the influential voices are and what they are saying, and then strategically join relevant conversations to shape perceptions. This requires understanding your brand's story and vision to guide engagement efforts.

No place has been living the Internet longer than Blacksburg, Virginia. In 1996, when only 8% of the U.S. was using the Internet, 62% of Blacksburg was online. It had the 1st wired school system, 1st library with free Internet access, 1st online ordering of groceries, 1st online real estate listings and 1st residential broadband.
And that makes it a bellwether for the future of social and mobile media. I return to Blacksburg every 5 years and I’d like to share what I’ to see what else it can teach us, and I just returned again.

Netflix has a unique corporate culture that emphasizes autonomy, transparency, and dissent. This culture was influenced by Netflix's failure with Qwikster in 2011, when the company tried to split its DVD and streaming services. The failure taught Netflix's CEO that employees were too afraid to dissent from his ideas, even when they disagreed. Netflix now encourages "farming for dissent" where employees openly critique each other's ideas.

The document discusses how a video of a shrimp running on a treadmill set to music became associated with celebrating walk-off walks in baseball games online. It explains that niche online communities can form around very specific interests when the barriers to creating and sharing media are lowered. These communities may be small but become valuable targets for those wanting to engage with passionate audience members.
Attendance at religious services has been declining significantly in the US, especially among younger generations. This poses an existential threat to traditional religious institutions and their business model of large congregations. However, like cord-cutting of cable TV, this does not mean people have abandoned their spiritual needs but are instead finding new ways to fulfill them outside traditional institutions. The document suggests religious institutions could learn from how the music and cable industries have been disrupted, by offering simpler, cheaper, and more personalized spiritual products and services through new models like on-demand content and the gig economy. This could help religious institutions adapt before they are disrupted by new spiritual entrepreneurs.
Uni Assessment 3 Short Essay MDA10006 Innovation Cultures, Perspectives on Sc...Sarah Tump Writer
The document discusses the history and evolution of media from radio to the internet. It traces the development of radio in the late 19th century for military communication and its growth into public broadcasting in the 1920s. The emergence of television in the late 1920s and its alteration to include reality shows by the 1970s is also examined. Finally, the essay covers the creation of the internet by Tim Berners-Lee in 1983 and how it allowed for participatory culture and personalized experiences by connecting all media. However, it warns that current media and algorithms may limit perspectives and distract from self-development.
July 8 2015 — Upworthy Editorial VisionUpworthyAdmin
Upworthy is shifting its strategy from curating existing impactful stories to creating original empathetic stories supported by deep data insights. It will combine sophisticated storytelling techniques with a data infrastructure to understand audience behaviors and emotions in order to spread meaningful stories that can change the world. Upworthy believes this mission-driven and data-informed approach defines a new frontier for quality storytelling in today's media landscape dominated by large platforms.
The document discusses how empowering people through participation is key in modern marketing. It outlines how media has evolved from local gatherings to mass broadcast media like print, radio, and television that did not allow for participation. The rise of the internet again enabled people to both consume and produce media through social networking sites and user-generated content. This represents a shift from broadcast marketing to participatory marketing where brands must engage and connect with people through generative experiences rather than just broadcasting messages. The focus is no longer on traditional or digital marketing alone but optimizing all marketing communications around a digital hub where attention, not ads, must be earned through meaningful engagement and participation.
The document discusses the steps to get writing help from HelpWriting.net, including creating an account, submitting a request form with instructions and deadline, and reviewing writer bids before choosing one and placing a deposit to start the assignment. New Media Practical Skills for Serbian Journalists Workshop July 2015 Dr Bill...Arizona State University
These are the Powerpoint slides converted from Keynote used during a workshop conducted by myself in partnership with the US Embassy Belgrade and IN. #Newmediabelgrade
join us on twitter in the conversation to explore New Media and Practical Skills
Workshop Purpose: This year will be tough for many media professionals. Completion of privatization and withdrawal of the state from media ownership of all media outlets in Serbia in mid-2015 will result in the bankruptcy and closure of many small media organizations that fail to find buyers. The goal of the seminar is to assist Serbian media professionals (reporters, photographers, cameramen, web editors) to shift focus to online media, which can provide low- or no-cost platforms for professional journalists. The workshop will teach local participants to replicate successful American new media/online models.
Workshop Mission: To help journalists explore the latest tools and technologies of new media. To reflect on their own role as a journalist and storyteller and what their personal brand is becoming. To understand more completely social media trends such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and others - and their impact on traditional news and your professional career. To share, explore and put into practice the most innovative and functional social media tools to deliver better news and public affairs to the people of Serbia and to create sustainable incomes for individual journalists.
Workshop key questions and objectives: What do you want to learn? What do you want to have happen? Who is responsible for the learning to occur? How can you make a difference?
Learning Outcomes: During these workshops, journalists should actively learn how to use online media, Internet and its resources for reporting. They should explore the power of personal and professional branding. We also will look at financial sustainability of online media, particularly news web portals, and the future of journalism.

Theory of Media Evolution (Ben Lerer, SXSW 2016)DevonThrillist
This document discusses the history of changes in media consumption and technology leading to new opportunities. It notes that in the late 20th century, the introduction of cable TV led to new networks like ESPN, Discovery Channel, and BET being founded. Similarly, the rise of smartphones and mobile internet in the 2000s has changed consumer behavior and created opportunities for new digital media companies. However, many of these new companies now face challenges from established players acquiring them or facing cost-cutting, as cable networks did previously. It also addresses how these changes impact concepts like authority, privacy, and whether a true revolution is occurring. Several topics are covered in the presentation, including the impact of new media on traditions like church, print media, broadcasting, and how industries like music and film have adapted to the digital age.
The document discusses the changing state of news media and journalism. It argues that three major shifts have occurred: 1) an explosion in the quantity of available information, 2) news can now be instantly updated and altered from many sources, and 3) the production and consumption of news has been decentralized from traditional advertising models. This decentralization has brought an end to the news media oligopoly and allowed anyone to produce and share news. However, the core functions of journalism - verification, sense-making, witnessing, and investigation - require expertise and cannot be replaced by algorithms. For journalism to maintain trust, it needs to focus on these essential functions.

An astonishing, first-of-its-kind, report by the NYT assessing damage in Ukraine. Even if the war ends tomorrow, in many places there will be nothing to go back to.
1. The News in 2015 The following was written in 2004 as Mook’s contribution to a PACT futurology conference. Tom Adams, at the time one of Mook’s creative driving forces and a very good writer himself (the next slide is his) had worked as part of the group tasked with creating a, ‘One to Many’ broadcasting scenario and handed the job to me, because I like this sort of thing. I haven’t changed anything in the text other than to trim down the number of semi colons - I was using too many at the time - and to add in an ad-lib of Tom’s (the Jimmy Carr punchine). As with all these sorts of things, some of the predictions failed to materialize in the commonly-held continuum, but are probably happening in another version, somewhere. Probably. Unfortunately, I didn’t see it delivered, but apparently it went down quite well.
2. High Sense of Community – One to Many Broadcasting still prevalent. We were asked to picture a future scenario where for various reasons despite a massive growth in media access we continue to prefer a small number of ‘broadcasters’. We were asked to couple this with a scenario where a new religion is formed and a high sense of community prevails. We have imagined a future where as a society we have experienced wider access to more programming – as well as the ability to make and distribute our own – and where eventually society has largely rejected this model in favour of larger commercial sources of entertainment. We have not looked in any depth at what this might mean for the internet, but our assumption is that it continues to serve the same purpose as today – after flirting with becoming an alternative form of television. The religious element to this scenario, was introduced as a wild-card to allow us to focus on the implications for society and community – some care should be taken with portraying the extremes of religious programming – we feel that religious broadcasting in this scenario will feature very little of a traditional god channel, much more a moral stance on news and entertainment that is more subtle than that.

WHEN ASKED WHY, KAZLOPSKI SAID HE HAD BECOME FED UP OF AMAZON STAFF, ‘NICKING HIS STUFF, MAN’: HE WENT ON: “I COLLECT OLD DVD MOVIES – IT’S MY THING, IT’S WHAT I DO, OK? DON’T JUDGE ME –
49. I’D PAY FOR ‘EM AND THEN THEY NEVER APPEARED! I SPENT A FORTUNE ON A COPY OF BUTTMASTER 9 AND IN NEVER SHOWED. I SAID TO THE GUY, HEY MAN- YOU KNOW WHERE MY MOVIE IS? AND HE JUST LAUGHED. THOSE GUYS WERE JUST RIPPING ME OFF - I DON’T REGRET IT.”
50. SONY INDUSTRIES IS THE SUBJECT OF 29 PERSONAL DISTRESS SUITS AND HAVE IN TURN ISSUED A SUIT AGAINST KAZLOPSKI FOR PROFESSIONAL MISCONDUCT. AMAZON, A WHOLLY OWNED SUBSIDIARY OF SONY INDUSTRIES, HAD NO COMMENT.
51. SOUNDS LIKE THAT’S A GUY WHO’S BARKING UP THE WRONG TREE! THAT’S ALL FROM ME. I’M TOM ADAMS. GOOD AFTERNOON- -AND GOD BLESS.
