2.  China, home to almost a fifth of the world’s population, is a country of
superlatives. Forty years of economic growth, at an average of
nearly 10% a year, has transformed the country into a global leader in
technology and manufacturing.
 Its economy is now second only in size to the United States - larger if
trade is taken into account - and it is home to six of the world’s
megacities.
 Despite its trade dispute with the US, China enjoyed first-quarter growth
of 6.4% this year, more than double the UN’s forecast for the rest of the
world.

3. CHINESE PERSPECTIVE ON THE
NEW WORLD ORDER
 The democratic period from 1989 to 1991 which witnessed the end of the Cold war, the Persian Gulf
and the collapse of the Soviet Union prompted an extensive debate amongst China's many
international relations scholars about the underlying meaning of these developments, their likely
consequences and their implications for China. This debate, is interesting and important for several
reasons. First, although China has in recent years played a deliberately quiescent role in world affairs,
its extraordinary economic performance has brought it into the top five nations measured by GDP, with
prospects of possessing the world's largest economy within a few decades. Unlike its neighbor, Japan
China has eschewed neither nuclear weapons nor strong opinions on international affairs. Second,
China's views on international affairs are interesting in their own right, deriving as they do from a
unique mixture of Marxist doctrines, China's self identification with the Third-World, and the long
historical perspective from which the Chinese are accustomed to observing the world. Finally,
whatever may be its future world role, China is already a significant power, as a permanent member of
the security council and a key player in the increasingly important Pacific region.

4. CAN CHINA BECOME A
SUPERPOWER?
 There is no doubt that China has already become the global
powerhouse economically, and is expected to surpass the US as the
world's biggest economy by 2028. Like the Soviet Union in the past,
China now faces several geopolitical and cultural challenges before it
can reach global superpower status similar to the US.

5. WHY IS CHINA EMERGING AS A
SUPERPOWER?
 Parag Khanna stated in 2008 that by making massive trade and
investment deals with Latin America and Africa, China had established
its presence as a superpower along with the European Union and the
United States. China's rise is demonstrated by its ballooning share of
trade in its gross domestic product.

6. HOW IS CHINA CONSIDERED A
SUPERPOWER?
 Some consensus has concluded that China has reached the
qualifications of superpower status, citing China's growing political clout
and leadership in the economic sectors has given the country renewed
standings in the International Community.

7. WHAT MADE CHINA A SUPERPOWER?
 Just as the United States remains a superpower in large part because
the world's default language is English, so China dominated minds in
east and central Asia for much of two millennia because of its ability to
shape the way that people lived and thought, even when it had little
direct political control over them.

8. WHY CHINA IS FASTEST GROWING
ECONOMY?
 Economists generally attribute much of China's rapid economic growth
to two main factors: large-scale capital investment (financed by large
domestic savings and foreign investment) and rapid productivity growth.
These two factors appear to have gone together hand in hand.
