WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE UNDER GRACE?
For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law
but under grace. - Romans 6:14

7Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the
ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of
life; and man became a living being. 8The LORD God
planted a garden toward the east, in Eden; and there
He placed the man whom He had formed. 9 Out of
the ground the LORD God caused to grow every tree
that is pleasing to the sight and good for food; the
tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the
tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
Genesis 2:7-9
15Then the LORD God took the man and put him
into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it.
16The LORD God commanded the man, saying,
“From any tree of the garden you may eat freely;
17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and
evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat
from it you will surely die.”
Genesis 2:15-17
When the woman saw that the tree was good for food,
and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree
was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit
and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and
he ate.
Genesis 3:6
15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If
anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in
him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh
and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is
not from the Father, but is from the world. 17The world
is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does
the will of God lives forever.
1 John 2:15-17
7Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they
knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves
together and made themselves loin coverings. 8They
heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden
in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid
themselves from the presence of the LORD God among
the trees of the garden.
Genesis 3:7-8
By the sweat of your face you will eat bread, till
you return to the ground, because from it you
were taken; For you are dust, and to dust you shall
return.”
Genesis 3:19
For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so
also faith without works is dead.
James 2:26
1 Behold, the LORD’S hand is not so shortThat it
cannot save; Nor is His ear so dull that it cannot
hear. 2 But your iniquities have made a separation
between you and your God, and your sins have
hidden His face from you so that He does not
hear.
Isaiah 59:1-2
SIN = DEATH
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of
God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:23
22Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has
become like one of Us, knowing good and evil; and now,
he might stretch out his hand, and take also from the
tree of life, and eat, and live forever”— 23 therefore the
LORD God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to
cultivate the ground from which he was taken. 24 So He
drove the man out; and at the east of the garden of
Eden He stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword
which turned every direction to guard the way to the
tree of life.
Genesis 3:22-24
Therefore, just as through one man sin entered
into the world, and death through sin, and so
death spread to all men, because all sinned.
Romans 5:12
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of
God.
Romans 3:23
21 For since by a man came death, by a man also
came the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in
Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made
alive.
1 Corinthians 15:21-22
18 So then as through one transgression there
resulted condemnation to all men, even so
through one act of righteousness there resulted
justification of life to all men. 19 For as through
the one man’s disobedience the many were made
sinners, even so through the obedience of the One
the many will be made righteous.
Romans 5:18-19
SIN = DEATH
CHRIST = LIFE
In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He
loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation
for our sins.
1 John 4:10
For the Law was given through Moses; grace and
truth were realized through Jesus Christ.
John 1:17
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith;
and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;
9 not as a result of works, so that no one may
boast.
Ephesians 2:8-9
And having been made perfect, He became to all
those who obey Him the source of eternal
salvation
Hebrews 5:9
1Then he showed me a river of the water of life,
clear as crystal, coming from the throne of God
and of the Lamb, 2 in the middle of its street. On
either side of the river was the tree of life, bearing
twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month;
and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of
the nations
Revelation 22:1-2
Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that
they may have the right to the tree of life, and
may enter by the gates into the city.
Revelation 22:14

Editor's Notes

  • #4 During the Civil War, the state of medical knowledge was extremely primitive. Doctors did not understand infection, and did little to prevent it. It was a time before antiseptics, and a time when there was no attempt to maintain a steril environment during surgery.
  • #5 Now that we understand more about germs, infections, etc. the grater appreciation we have for sterilization!
  • #6 We wouldn’t think of going into surgery today unless the sugeons wore masks, gloves, and had a sterile environment!
  • #7 Likewise we cannot truely understand the blessing of the GRACE of GOD until we understand the NEED for GRACE! To understand the NEED for GRACE we need to go back to a time before sin, when MAN was ONE WITH GOD!
  • #8 GOD PROVIDED FOR ALL THE NEEDS OF MAN
  • #10 MAN WAS CREATED IN A RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD, HE HAD TO OBEY IN ORDER TO REMAIN IN THAT RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD. There was one command and the penalty for disobediance to that command was death. Not 1,613 commands.
  • #14 Sin separates man from God
  • #23 What is the solution to put man back in the relationship he once had with his creator?
