2. Endeavoring to promote advances in
education, the NEA Foundation recently
granted 55 awards to innovative educators.
Their ideas ranged from new personal-health
education initiatives to programs that focused
on sustainability. Another of the new
programs supported by the grants will
prepare students for their professional
careers by teaching thinking strategies, a
curriculum that focuses on common core
standards for professionalism.

3. The 55 awards reached educators in 28
states. The grants provided $176,000 for
initiatives designed to encourage
achievement and leadership skills. Many of
the funded projects targeted literacy as a
primary goal. A team of 20 experienced
educators, many of whom previously received
the same award for their own innovative
work, made the decisions for the grants.
