4. Working with the text
• The young man lacks experience and is gullible. He is
uneducated in the ways of wisdom and need instruction.
• With his lack of wisdom and experience, this young man
was an easy target for the demanding sexually immoral
woman.
• She is boisterous and rebellious, … So she seizes him and
kisses him, and with a brazen (bold) face she says to him:
….I have spread my couch with coverings,.. with colored
linens of Egypt. “I have sprinkled my bed with myrrh, aloes
and cinnamon. “Come, let us drink our fill of love until
morning;
5. Working with the text
• A well-chosen target (simple…a young man
devoid of understanding, Pro 7:7)
• Available to meet (the path to her house…a
woman met him, Pro 7:8, 7:10)
• Provocatively clothed (with the attire of a
harlot, Pro 7:10)
• Of bad character (loud and rebellious, Pro
7:11)
6. Working with the text
• Looking to trap and seduces (she caught him,
Pro 7:13)
• Free with physical affection (kissed him, Pro
7:13)
• Gave some recognition to religion (peace
offerings…paid my vows, Pro 7:14)
• Pursuit to make one feel desired (I came out to
meet you, diligently, Pro 7:15)
7. Working with the text
• Promise to please the senses (I have spread my
bed…I have perfumed my bed, Pro 7:16-17)
• Invitation to her bed (I have spread my bed…I have
perfumed my bed, Pro 7:16-17)
• Promises of love, delight, and sensual pleasure (let
us take our fill of love until morning; let us delight
ourselves with love, Pro 7:18)
• Persuasion that the risk of discovery is very low (my
husband is not at home; he has gone on a long
journey, Pro 7:19)
8. The cost of it all?
An arrow pierces through his liver; As a bird hastens to the
snare, So he does not know that it will cost him his life.
10. Children of God & Alcohol
Genesis 9:20-24; Proverbs 23:29-35
11. Children of God & Alcohol
➡Proverbs 23:32 At the
last it bites like a serpent
And stings like a viper.
➡Proverbs 20:1 Wine is
a mocker, strong drink is
raging: And whosoever
is deceived thereby is
not wise.
12. Children of God & Alcohol
• Isaiah 5:11 Woe to those who
rise early in the morning, that
they may follow intoxicating
drink; Who continue until
night. Till wine inflames them.
• Woe — used to express
grief, regret, distress,
misfortune, affliction.
• “woe” in the Greek is “ouai” it
is a judgment or impending
doom.
• Reference: Isaiah 5:22
13. Application
• The bible specifically tells us not to get drunk.
• Ephesians 5:18-19 And do not get drunk with wine, for
that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to
one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord;
• Drunk is an inceptive verb—shows a process of beginning
or becoming. In other words don’t begin the process of
drinking alcohol!
• Galatians 4:16…. ????
14. Application
• You cannot make heaven being a drunkard.
• 1 Corinthians 6:10-11 Or do you not know that the
unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do
not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor
adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor
thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers,
nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.
• Such were some of you; but you were washed, but
you were sanctified, but you were justified in the
name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of
our God.
15. Food for thought
• What if I am home drinking and I get a call
from a loved one and they are in need of
desperate help now? Do I drive, am I sober
enough to even know what is being asked of
me?
• What if my neighbor whom I have been
studying with comes over and wants to be
baptized or has more questions about the
gospel?
