- It’s been said that life without language is a reality that is virtually impossible for most modern humans to fathom. Languages have played a significant role in our daily lives, yet we take it for granted.
- It’s been said that life without language is a reality that is virtually impossible for most modern humans to fathom. Languages have played a significant role in our daily lives, yet we take it for granted.
- So here I am, telling you about the loss of languages. To make you aware, of the unaware. Language extinction has been a phenomenon for at least 10,000 years. The extinction of a language is defined when the last person who learned it as his or her primary tongue passes away.
- Little do we know that in every 14 days, a language dies, and along with that:
- The wealth of knowledge
- The history
- The culture are all
- *click* gone.
- Did you know that80% of the world speaks only 1% of the world’s languages? Yeah. English makes up about 0.01% of the world languages, yet there are one and a half billion English speakers around the world.
- That means that by 2100, the world’s estimated 7,000 languages will be deducted by more than a half.
- Languages typically die when speakers of a small language group come in contact with a more dominant population.
- In the U.S. in past decades, the government forced natives to abandon their language through vehicles such as boarding schools that punished youth for speaking a traditional tongue.
- My own grandfather, Mr. Cooper is the last of generation of the Cherokee tribe. Although he is 1/35th Native American, he takes pride in his culture. When I was 6, he told me that everyone around me was my Cherokee sister, and my Cherokee brother. However, when I visited him this summer, he told me that the government was taking their land away. There are now less and less Native Americans, as they can’t maintain to stay here financially, while more and more whites are moving in.
- Most of the Cherokee culture and history are now being preserved in the national Museum, however they’re slightly altered due to the fact that the local government wanted to hide the “unnecessary” facts of how the Native Americans were treated. Mr. Cooper is one of the few who still knows how to speak the Cherokee language. The Cherokee language is also dying.
- Each loss is a tragedy.
- Because we lose our cultural identity.
- Our cultural diversity.
- Language diversity is essential to the human heritage as each language embodies the unique cultural wisdom of a people.
- Thus, the loss of any language is a loss for humanity
- How tragic would that be: to have all the color in the world fade away into mundane?
- Having the world being the exact same.
