THE LIFE OF A FILM –
  RESEARCH TASK
THE FOLLOWING TERMS ARE ESSENTIAL IN
         THE FILM INDUSTRY:
• Production – Involves all stages of creating the intended product e.g.
  filming, editing, getting sponsors, hiring cast and crew.
• Subsidiary – A small company owned by a better known parent
  company such as Universal Music Group (subsidiary) and Vivendi
  (parent company).
• Distribution – Dealing with how the company’s product will be
  exhibited, whether it be setting a release date for cinema or directly
  for home viewing (DVD, On-Demand or TV).
• Marketing – Promoting the film months before the release date so
  that they are guaranteed to have as many viewers and make as
  much money as possible by things such as trailers, film posters,
  billboards, TV adverts, internet and newspaper advertisements etc.
• Exhibition - Producing physical copies of a film for cinema or home
  release and finding retailers/exhibitors to sell the film.
• Horizontal Integration – Several companies of the same stage of the
  film industry that are owned by a parent company.
• Vertical Integration – Several companies of different stages of the
  film industry that are owned by a parent company.
WORKING TITLE – DEFINITELY, MAYBE

    38-year-old Will Hayes is going through divorce and after his 10-
    year-old Maya’s first sex-ed class, she asks about how her parents
    met. He tells the story which includes three women and when
    telling the story, Will changes their names as well as some of the
    events to leave Maya guessing as to which woman turned out to
    be her mother.

PRODUCTION

• The film’s budget was $7,000,000.
• Finance was provided by Tim Easthill of
  Working Title.
• Working Titles also produced films such as
  Drop Dead Fred, About a Boy and Dead
  Man Walking.
DISTRIBUTION, HORIZONTAL &
     VERTICAL INTEGRATION
• The film was released in the UK on the 14th of
  February, 2008.
• Universal Pictures were the distributors.
• Working Title has a partnership with Universal who
  distribute their films, making Working Title horizontally
  integrated.
• Working Title is owned by parent company, Vivendi,
  which owns other companies such as Universal
  Music Group, Universal Music Publishing Group and
  Canal+ Group showing that as well as being
  horizontally integrated, it is also vertically integrated.
EXHIBITION

• Definitely, Maybe received $55,447,968 from Box
  Office.
• It would have be shown in smaller cinemas because
  it made a lot of money in box office meaning it was
  very popular.
• The film is on DVD, Blu-Ray and has an official
  soundtrack.
WARP FILMS - TYRANNOSAUR
     Unemployed widower, Joseph, has a history of violence and rage and
     after brutally attacking a dog, decides to change his ways for the
     better. He stumbles across charity shop worker Hannah, a wholesome
     Christian woman who takes pity on him and befriends him. She may
     have a respectable exterior but only time will tell the dark secret she is
     hiding.

PRODUCTION

• The film’s budget was £750,000.
• The film received a grant of £206,540 from
  the National Lottery fund through the UK Film
  Council. The remainder of the film's budget came
  from Warp X, Inflammable Films, Film4, Screen
  Yorkshire, EM Media and Optimum
  Releasing (StudioCanal).
• Other films the company produced are Submarine,
  This is England and Hush.
DISTRIBUTION, HORIZONTAL &
        VERTICAL INTEGRATION
• The film was released in the UK on the 7th of October,
  2011.
• It was distributed by StudioCanal UK and Strand
  Releasing (US).
• Warp Films has a sister company, Warp X, that
  specialises in feature films which makes it
  horizontally integrated.
• As well as that, it is associated with Warp Records
  (Record label) showing that it is vertically
  integrated.
EXHIBITION

• The Box Office for Tyrannosaur was £244,563.
• It may have been played in small cinemas because
  it is an indie type film although looking at the box
  office, it wasn’t that popular so maybe not.
• The film was released on DVD, Blu-Ray and has an
  official soundtrack.
