The Library Of Alexandria Campus Library
The main goal of libraries, are to teach students how to make use of the resources. The library of
NVCC dedicates itself into helping students at the Alexandria campus. That is why it provides a
wide range of sources that aids its students. Whether it is for a class, a job, or a research, the library
has the materials they need to execute their work. In the words of Robert Putnam, a political
scientist who teaches at Harvard University, he said that "People may go to the library looking
mainly for information, but they find each other there." To clarify what is said, people may use the
library for information; but due to the materials that they found in their research, they realize that if
they made use of the library for their previous works, they would have met the requirements that
were needed. The argument presented on this paper, is that the Alexandria campus library has a great
effect on students in terms of helping them meet their academic goals. Although, there are some
modifications it needs to make it better and more user friendly. One thing the NOVA library does, is
that it gives students a connection to a greater academic community. There are fifty computers
provided in the library for students to execute their work. Students can come in at anytime and make
use of them. The staff at the library consists of twelve people, that are working to make a positive
effect on those students who are making use of the library. Four of those people are faculty member,

The company's website was also reviewed during this meeting. A formal document was handed to
the interns for providing the detailed information related to the company's manuals and policies. All
the interns and new employees were requested to submit all their documents to the Human Resource
Department for verifications. The new hire forms were provided and completed by all the new
people. Being an intern, I was not familiar with the current working environment of the company.
Inspiration Space Coordinator had provided full support to me in getting acquainted with the day to
day operations of the organization. The hierarchy, on–going projects and existing clients of the
organization were also discussed during this time. The company's association with the state libraries
and centralized data system was also explained by the supervisor (C. Shaw, personal
communication, September 17, 2015). The internship objectives and responsibilities were discussed
among the interns and supervisor to avoid ambiguity. I was introduced to the data management
team. The project's objectives and various issues in the current system were discussed. The roles of
the team members in the project were also specified. During this period, I had met various
employees from different departments and communicated with them to understand and study the
existing data management system. The information was provided to the interns about the current

Library Collaboration
Effective school librarians actively engage in collaboration with various entities to support students'
educational growth. Teachers, administrators, architects, information technology, and the
community are all possible partners of school librarians in supporting the advancement of student's
education as well as ensuring that they become lifelong learners. However, school librarians must
partner with germane sources that will help support the curriculum of the school. In the articles for
Module Two, the utility of collaboration between school librarians, architects, teachers, and
administrators is espoused. If school librarians make forming vital collaborations as one of their
goals, then they will empower students, the community, and ... Show more content on

School librarians and teachers can collaborate in instruction that will support school and national
curriculum standards. Furthermore, school librarians who have expert knowledge of the schools'
curriculum as well as national learning standards will be able to form more effective partnerships
with teachers. Boyner (2015) asserts, "Knowing the school's overarching mission, individual
department goals and objectives, as well as the guiding curricular framework is a crucial first step
for winning teacher buy–in" (p.63). The collaboration between the school librarian and language arts
faculty equipped high school students with many of the skills that they would need to perform
successful college level research. For a school librarian to become a leader, they must collaborate
with classroom teachers and gain their support for the School Library Program (SLP).
The principal can be a school librarian's biggest advocate for the SLP or they can view the SLP
program as a waste of funding that could be better spent on other resources. According to Lupton
(52), "Principals said that they needed the funding invested in the teacher–librarian to be used for
teaching. They pointed out that they could hire a library assistant to undertake the library functions"
(52). Accordingly, school librarians need to demonstrate to school

School Library Vs. School Libraries
The overall goal of any school library is to provide a space where students can grow and learn
through the use of various information resources. School libraries, their funding and involvement in
schools has changed in the past decades and continues to change and grow into the future. With the
continual shift towards using more technology and the way in which we are consuming and using
information only enhances the need for school libraries to continue to play a vital role in providing
access to information and ideas for our students, teachers and schools. As technology continues to
change and affect the needs of students and teachers, it is important for school libraries to embrace
that change and participate in the change while still remembering their overall purpose and serving
the students and community to the best of their ability.
First, it is important to establish and understand the history, standards, and evolution of school
libraries and school media specialists in the United States. School libraries have a history of constant
change and fluctuating support. The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) became a
subset of the American Library Association in 1951 (Taylor, 2015). Shortly thereafter, they
published standards for school libraries that emphasized that school library media programs should
be student centered, focusing on enriching the development of individual students. The school
librarian's role should include that of teacher, being jointly

Norman Bethune Library
The library I volunteered at is run by the high school, Dr. Norman Bethune Collegiate Institute
(C.I.). The school was founded in 1979 and was named after Norman Bethune; a well–known
Canadian doctor. He was best known for his services during World War I and his dedication to
helping the poor in Canada. Moreover, over these past few years, the school has prospered
beautifully and has had many renovations and changes. For example, two years ago, the school's
library had a huge makeover. The library was given new furniture to allow to have students a better
working space. Similarly, the library moved shelves around in order to make it more convenient for
everyone to access books. Ultimately, Dr. Norman Bethune C.I. has it in their best interest to
provide students with the tools they need to succeed in education. In other words, the school
displays good citizenship by assisting their students. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

fact, I have been a student there for over 5 years. This year, I am taking the math and art programs

Library Donation Books
This summer I spent hours on the library's third floor, a large area used for storage since the 1970's;
no air conditioning but lots of dust. I sorted through 177 boxes of books that were donated to the
library. Library staff are not following the current donation policy and all donated books are given to
the Friends Book Sale. Many books in my Adult Fiction section are in well–loved condition with
water damage, broken spines and torn pages. Sorting through the boxes led to the addition of 300
adult fiction titles not owed by the library, example added a new copy of Odd Thomas by Dean
Koontz. The donation books were used to replace 450 "loved books" with newer copies, example
replaced a water damaged, broken spine copy of The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah with a brand
new copy. My frustration leads me to search for information about how to handle book donations in
a public library. I searched the Library and Information Source link on Clarion's online library page
using the term "handling gift or donated books". I selected Kay Ann Cassell's article "Handling gift
books in libraries: A view from the US." Cassell's article provides an overview of guidelines to be
used in creating a gift book policy. A gift or donated book policy should be part of the library's
Collection Development policy. Library staff are able to follow a policy that explains the purpose of
the library's collection, what the library provides, who are library users and what types of materials

The Importance Of Technology In The Library
Library has been a great source for information literacy. Being a cheap source and having books to
read library were popular years ago and were one of the most used sources for education. Library
had played huge role in promoting information literacy but, with the advancement in technology
people are now open to a lot sources and on this run libraries were seem to be neglected due to the
lack of updated information in the library. Libraries have gone through some necessary changes that
have helped updating information available there.
Technology is developing day by day. There is not a single question that Google does not have. We
can find answers to each and every question in Google. But due to the limited space in library there
are situations where we cannot find a book that is relevant with our topic. For instance, I wanted to
know about current political situation in United States but the library has books only about the
political history of United States then there is no use of reading the book. I would rather prefer
going to the internet and searching about the political history in United States. This shows using
technology can most of the time be beneficial and saves a lot of time. Closely looking the pros of
using technical sources library has also started using computer as a part of library. This change that
the library has bought has been beneficial to a lot of people as they can access to whichever source
they want either the book or the information off the

The Library : The Destruction Of The Ancient Library
Today, I will inform you all about the most devastating loss of knowledge: The Destruction of the
Ancient Library of Alexandria.
I will enlighten you all about the history, the destruction, and the advancements the world missed
out on from the Ancient Library of Alexandria.
What if I told you that in an instant, all the knowledge you know vanished. There is no evidence left.
The advancements in the world would be at standstill.
Relevance statement: Without the destruction of the Ancient Library of Alexandria, the technology
advances would have been increased dramatically.
I was in 2nd grade when I first heard about the Library and ever since I been intrigued. I want to
share the knowledge I have gained by the research I have conducted.
The destruction of the library was a great loss to the world; the knowledge was taken from the world
and advancements were postponed.
The library is still a great wonder to the world.
First, I'm going to be discussing the history of the Library of Alexandria. Which was named after
Alexandria the Great.
According to the Ancient History Encyclopedia, "Demetrius of Phalerum envisioned a library that
would house a copy of every book in the world." The library was established in the 3rd century of
BC in Alexandria, Egypt. Egypt was a country of free thinkers. This was rare. During this time,
many sciences and rebellious theories were forbidden. Therefore, many researchers wanted to go to
the Museum and study.
At first, its purpose was to show

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) within the National Foundation of the Arts

program has been in existence for the past twenty years and was incorporated by Legislation. The
IMLS provides federal support for the nation's 123,000 libraries and 35,000 museums. The IMLS
motto is Reimagine. In my own words establishing a museum and library in today's 21s century of
technology and digital resources would be the new "REIMAGE".
The research and evaluation of this program targets each state museum and library needs and what
they have to offer to the community.
The museum of my choice would be to create an Interactive Gallery Fashion Institute.

Archives Of The Hamilton Public Library
Term Project – Archive Visit The archive I am visiting for this term project is the Local History &
Archives of the Hamilton Public Library located on the third floor of the Central Branch at 55 York
Boulevard in Hamilton, Ontario. Since 1914, Hamilton Public Library has been collecting and
preserving Hamilton 's history. The Local History & Archives collection consists of material such as
letters, photographs, manuscripts, diaries and other original records created by Hamilton and area
citizens. There are records of local businesses and organizations, family papers, government records
of the City of Hamilton and the County of Wentworth, military records, theatrical collections, music
collections, ephemera, etc. This archive visit took place on November 16th 2016.
According to their website the mandate of the Local History & Archives collection has five main
goals. The first is that the Local History & Archives collection exists to "collect and preserve
materials which illustrate the growth and development of Hamilton–Wentworth, both before and
after incorporation, or which pertain in whole or in part to activities within the geographic
boundaries of Hamilton–Wentworth" (HPL). The second goal is to arrange and describe these
materials according to "archival principles and make them accessible to the general public on a
regular basis" (HPL). The third goal is simply to provide adequate and appropriate conditions for the
storage, protection and preservation of the materials

The Georgia Institute of Tecnology's Library
The Georgia Institute of Technology's Library is a research institution located in Atlanta Georgia.
The prestigious academic library is an integral hub for science and engineering students from around
the globe. From its small origins in a one room classroom and only one librarian in 1901; the library
officially opened its doors in 1907.As of 2014, the library now requires a large staff of 136–150
employees, in order to maintain the academic library. The materials budget varies from $4,000,000
to $6,818,190. A huge portion is spent on periodicals and databases. A portion of the budget, around
$250,000 is deviated for monograph or books. A wealth of resources and imperative information, the
library's approximate collection for titles is 1,061,206; volumes is 2,537,869 (including 248,580 e–
books).In 2012, 9,229 volumes have been acquired.
I spoke to two different Heads of Acquisitions at GA Tech. First I spoke to Tom Fisher; he has been
employed at the GA Tech library for 22yrs. Initially he worked in circulations, now he works in
monograph (books) acquisitions as the Assistant Head of Acquisitions & Serials. He is responsible
for the purchase of monographs and standing orders; receives and processes purchase requests. I
also conducted a web interview with Elizabeth Winter, the Assistant Department Head & E–

The History Of The Library Profession
John Ambrosio (2013), reflecting on the history of the library profession, invokes Antonio Gramsci,
who said that a critical understanding of the self also requires the development of an ethical stance, a
set of values, principles, and virtues to guide one's moral conduct (Ambrosio, 2013, p. 328). Lacking
such ethics or praxis, librarians are vulnerable to the dominant political ideology. "The way to
overcome paralysis is the consciousness of what one really is and knowing oneself. It begins with
taking an inventory of our historical formation with determining how we have been secretly
imprinted by history; how our language, thoughts and identities have been informed by various
currents of philosophical thought and cultural practices" (Gramsci in Ambrosio, 2013, p. 328). By
examining the history of the library profession – a history that conflates neutrality with equality and
democracy, staffed by a cadre of professionals who trace their beginnings to a theory of "library
economy" – it is easy to imagine how neoliberal ideology found a home in the library.
Many theorists recognize the fact that librarians have the potential to make progressive reforms to
society (Raber, 2003, p. 47), if they would only break free of the "contradictory theoretical
consciousness" and hegemonic norms that hold them back from doing so by suggesting that they
should take no action (Bales & Engle, 2012, p. 22). Louis Althusser (2009), in particular felt that
librarians had a "social and moral

The Benefits Of Public Libraries
As technology advances and progresses more, some people began to question the existence of public
libraries and what value they'll hold in the future. More devices are being produced that can replace
books, such as Kindles, Nooks, and other apps that can be downloaded on any portable electronic
device. These devices, however, can't replace all that libraries can offer. Public libraries will still be
in use and serve us in the future. These facilities still offer people internet access, services for
children and families, and access to reading materials. First, public libraries offer people access to
the internet and to computers. Many people believe the age of the Internet is what would shut down
public libraries. However, not everyone has internet in their homes and rely on places, like their
local public library, to provide internet and computer access. In an interview, Jorge said, "Our study
of library computer users found that for 22 percent of library computer users (age 14 and older), that
the library was their only access to computers and the Internet" (Source C). People still need public
libraries to work on school work, online things for their jobs, or even just to relax and play an online
game. The original purpose of libraries was not to offer internet, but libraries still serve a purpose
and are in use. Secondly, public libraries offer services and activities for kids and families. Aside
from books and computers, libraries often have many events and

Library Observation Essay
For my first school library teacher observation, I observed Ms. Gallo–Toth at Brookline Public
School's John D. Runkle Elementary School. According to the Brookline Public Schools website
(PSBMA) Website– Runkle School, para.3) is a K–8 school that has about 560 students. The Runkle
School is also a host to many Spanish English Language Learner students as well as the Reaching
Independence through Structured Education program for children on the autistic spectrum. I
observed Ms. Gallo–Toth introduce the library to sixth grade students as well as visit kindergarten
classrooms to become acquainted with the kindergartners before their formal visit to the library.
Furthermore, I observed an author and illustrator visit to first and second graders at the Martin
Sleeper Library at the John D. Runkle School that derived from collaboration between Ms. Gallo–
Toth and a local independent bookstore. Moreover, I increased my understanding of how a school
library teacher employs collaboration and flexibility to administer the school library program. The
culmination of my observations of Ms. Gallo–Toth highlighted how school library teachers have
many roles within the school such as instruction, collaboration, promoting literacy, and as the school
library program administrator.
The first segment of my elementary school observation was observing Ms. Gallo–Toth introduced
herself, the library, and routines and procedures to two sixth grade classes. By arriving before Ms.

The Grand Duchess Library: An Analysis
Sometimes certain events in life have the most unpredictable outcomes; outcomes that break all
norms and boundaries, morphing personality into something intricately fiendish, something beyond
the comprehension of an ordinary person. Elijah Smith was one such example of a person who
transcended these boundaries to delve into his craving for blood and gore. The look of helplessness
in a dying man's eyes or the way blood rushed out of an open wound were just some of the things
that fascinated Elijah. He was never the one to shy away from his curiosities and from a young age
the man expanded his palate, encompassing the unorthodox until all that was left inside him was a
demon who looked for gruesome ways to do the devil's bidding. Merely killing someone or
inflicting pain wasn't his agenda. No, it was far more artistic and complicated than that. ... Show

A heavy downpour ensued outside, with thunder roaring periodically through the night. Even in such
terrible weather, The Duchess stood unrivaled and proud, a fine example of a blend of modern
architecture and art. The Grand Duchess Library wasn't just a mere public library, but in fact it was
the town's landmark and a source of pride for the locals since it depicted art in its construction along
with housing knowledge. It was at this time that Elijah sat in the sanctuary of the library, writing on
a rectangular piece of parchment, light sienna in shade and deep in its tone. Dark ink flowed
smoothly out onto the piece of parchment, intricately forming letters into a fancy cursive writing. He
was using a quill paired with an inkpot. Once the first message was written, he blew on the ink,
making sure it was dry. His deep azure eyes shimmered with delight while he read his written work
for the last time before placing it between the pages of an unpopular novel that very few seemed to
be interested in. (I'll leave the name of this up to

Public Libraries : The Power Of A Public Library
The Power of a Public Library Libraries provide resources such as books and computers to a variety
of people who may not have them otherwise. A great deal of people in society believe that with the
rise of technology, libraries should not be so prominent although they continue to provide very
important resources. "22 percent of library computer users (age 14 and older), the library was their
only source for access to computers and the Internet" (Source C). In addition to the computer access,
Orlando Park public library's calendar of events provides families with a wide variety of useful
activities to participate in. Planned activities include Microsoft excel classes, EnvironMental clubs
and teen ink sessions (Source B). All the events sponsored by the library are educational and
valuable to a community population. Shank reminds us that, "People less likely to use–books
include Hispanics, those without a high school diploma, the unemployed, rural Americans, and those
with household incomes of less than $30,000"(Source C). Lastly, the author adds, that libraries
contribute greatly to their community by offering digital reading access as well by letting patrons
rent out e–reading devices (Shank, What Is the Role of Libraries in the Age of EBooks and Digital
Information?). Overall, libraries continue to modify with the rapid advancements in modern society.

Library Synthesis Essay
They say that you cannot judge a book by its cover. Increasingly in the United States, you also
cannot judge a library's value to its community by simply its books. In today's society we observe
the changes that have occurred throughout time; one of them being technology. Technology has
infiltrated every aspect in our lives and it has changed the way we access and receive information,
which presents major challenges and opportunities for public library systems across the world.
These new technologies have changed our reading habits, but our need for public space to find
information and connect with others is unlikely to change any time soon. To survive in the digital
age and stay relevant, public libraries have adapted to the new trends of how we read, work and

matter of fact, there is evidence that libraries are changing rapidly. They are offering a wide range of
other media and modern technologies like, videos, audio books, e–books, DVD's and microsoft

Wayne State University LITERATURE REVIEW The research question "what impact can librarians
and libraries have on the decline in older children and teen use of library services and recreational
reading" can be broken down to discuss several subtopics. This literature review examines peer–
reviewed background material to provide a basis for the research questions discussed within this
study. The review of the literature is divided into four subtopics that were studied using different
theories and approaches in an effort to answer the research question. In an ... Show more content on

Factors Affecting the Decline in Aging Children
The early teen reading slump has been noted by researchers. Researchers have consistently found
that pleasure reading increases throughout childhood and begins to decline, usually at age twelve to
thirteen. Howard, V. (2009). Unfortunately, few researchers have explored the specific reasons for
this decline from the perspective of teens themselves. Even fewer still have explored the role that
reading for pleasure plays in the lives of young teens. Public libraries focus simultaneously on
improving services to teen patrons and to pleasure readers of all ages as key to strategies to maintain
importance and competitive advantage in the "age of Google." (p. 298). One of the most significant
barriers in the reading decline is difficulties selecting appealing reading materials. (p.299). This
particular study was collected using focus group questions with 249 completed surveys out of the
900 sent to junior high school students. There were several factors that effected teen reading and
usage of library services. Teens did not view library staff as a useful source of readers' advisory.
Teens describe their lives as very busy, leaving little time to read for pleasure. In this study, many
teens note that they have more homework that elementary school, but also more freedom to
socialize. Teens describe their dislike of assigned reading and their desire to select their own reading
materials. This research

Library Interview Analysis
Introduction I started the process of seeking an interview about two weeks before the assignment
was do. I had email several places and the response was almost the same for them all. They could
only meet with me after the assignment was due. I then remember a small library in the city that I
reside in and that was the Harrison Township Public Library.
The Interview The interview was held Thursday, March 23, 2017 at the Harrison Township Public
library. I arrived 15 minutes before 11:00 A.M. and did last minute question changes before walking
into the library. The library is quite small (perhaps 2000 square feet in total size). I talk to the
librarian on staff and she directed me to the main office area that was at one point a storage closest.
That was when I meet with the Director of the Harrison Township Public Library, Dan Hutchins. I
started off the interview asking him what he was responsible for managing. He was in charge of the
hiring, firing, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"Things are getting tougher everyday" (2017) for librarians and that to make a living as a librarian
(which in his eyes is working fulltime) "you have to move where the jobs are... and you have to love
what you do..." (2017). His reasoning is that because it's getting harder, you have to love it to keep
pushing on for that living to be a possibility. He also said that networking is also a very big key that
I need to start as soon as possible. "Get your name and accomplishments out there" and to "make
contacts" (2017) not just for networking (which is important) but for day–to–day advice.
Conclusion
Overall, I learned much with my time with the Director of the Harrison Public Library, Dan
Hutchins. He was a man on integrity and compassion for his field and gave me important insights on
how it could be for me one day as a manager or leader in the librarian field. It's a tough world and
this interview move me one step closer to facing it head

Free Public Libraries
The Worthwhile Investment In 'free' Public Libraries
Public libraries are essential in the community. It serves different ethnic group of people who want
to learn different language, especially english. Libraries is beneficial to people living in the
community. For many years it provides free services to adult and children, therefore government
should not charge fees for citizen using the public libraries. the article, can we afford "Free"
Libraries states, "Government can lower tax burden across the base by charging a fee for library
service" is not right, because theseinstitution are the only organization that is beneficial the
community. First of all, Libraries prepare student for higher education. Furthermore, it provides
after school programs. And besides, there are different programs that prepare people for carrier
opportunities, and so, public libraries should remain free for the benefit of the people in the
community.
Libraries are storerooms for history book. Communities of diverse people use the library for
research that prepare them for higher education. People should not have to worry about having
money to pay for the service. For example, People goes to libraries to educate themselves. Both,
people who cannot afford to pay for private tutoring, or those who just want to learn more about
what is going on in the country. The article makes a claim that, "tax dollars could be spend on
project that better service the community." Is mind blowing, because what can

The Reflection Of The Library Space In The University
The space that we chose to explore was the library. As students within the university, we use the
library space on a daily basis. "Space speak of being, belonging, and becoming" (Australian
Government Department of Education Employment and Workplace Relations, 2009, as cited in
Giamminuti, 2013, p. 52). The library is a space that we are familiar with and expected to be
comfortable with. It is a space where students can find books, study, collaborate, use computers, and
print materials. Our understanding of the library is limited to it being a quiet, respected, and
organized space. However, we instead, wanted to explore the unfamiliar, the unexpected, and
uncomfortable aspects of the library. We'd like to explore its "volumes, colours, light, sounds, and
smells" and be in dialogue with these matters (Reggio Children, 2011).
The entrance to the library played a huge role on how we understand this place. We had
expectations, from previous experience, of how the library will be. According to Giamminuti
(2013), "what one feels and views when entering a school can influence what one then perceives as
one's role within that school, one's relationship to others, and what one eventually comes to know
about the school" (p. 53).
These doors reminded us of the expectations it held upon. As soon as you enter the library, the
atmosphere suddenly changes.
When people enter the space, they automatically lower their voices and no one would make any
loud sound. We wanted to find out

Kirksville Library Volunteers Case
Introduction to Organization and Environment In regards to the Kirksville Library Volunteers Case,
this is a medium–sized public library located in a large, southern city. Non profit. Funding. In order
for the library to function beyond the limits of its normal paid staff, the library relies on a large
volunteer reserve of 75 volunteers.
This library functions like many other libraries in its input, throughput, and output. It is most likely a
non–profit organization that is funded by sources such as taxes, grants, and private benefactors. The
library also likely runs on a quarterly budget if not a yearly budget and it does not often have to
change how things are done. Because of this, the library by definition falls into a placid
environment. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Volunteers would be guaranteed projects and tasks to do during their shift. In this situation there
would only be one employee managing the 75 volunteers, again this may be too much for one
person. Managing a lot of individuals can cause frustration for the selected employee who is
managing the volunteers, thus disturbing morale in the workplace.
The most practical solution for this management case would be to choose three to four serious,
eligible and qualified volunteers to become Volunteer Coordinators. Each Volunteer Coordinator
would be assigned to one section of the library e.g. circulation, technical services, or outreach and so
on. They would be liaising with staff from the designated section, creating a list of projects and tasks
that could be fulfilled by the volunteer. Previous communication issues would more than likely be
solved between staff and volunteer coordinators.
The Volunteer Coordinators would then select which category of the library volunteers would work,
dividing them up evenly as possible. A trusting relationship will begin to form after the volunteer
works in their designated section. One disadvantage of this arrangement could be that

Shafer Library Research Paper
The Shafer Library and Its Many Flaws
The Shafer library is an obviously rather old building that has trouble even keeping up with all the
commodities offered by even my dorm as far as studying is concerned for example, I have a very
good computer and laptop that easily outpaces the horribly outdated tech provided by our cramped
little library. Some people might stress the importance of keeping some things the same holding onto
their quaint traditions with outstanding vigour, but sometimes things just need a good old fashion
overhaul and that's something Shafer is in dire need of. Prime examples of this are readily evident
even in your first trounce through Shafer, the beige walls give a horribly dreary feeling to all who
inhabit its creativity stifling abode, lined with paintings of old men nobody cares about, book stands
that are rarely filled, and you can tell by the lack of life in all parts of this extremely modest library

Library Access Disadvantages
3.12) According to first amendment every person has a right to express their feelings. Considering
the first amendment, library staff has right to complaint against the library committee to Federal
Equal Employment Opportunity Commission as they were held up with hostile environment.
Library is a public place where various categories of people come to improve their knowledge with
available library resources in a peaceful environment. It is very important for library team to take
proper precautions as children of age below eighteen also visit public libraries.
If the libraries don't have filters and limitations on usage of internet access the library resources can
be misused. So, these kinds of conflicts can be avoided by taking proper precautions and safety
measures. Libraries should have filters so that whenever anyone is trying to access unusual sites in
public place it can directly block the site. The systems should be placed in such a way that library
staff can monitor what people are trying to access and if they notice any unwanted stuff is displayed
on screens they can directly block such kind of users. Library printers should not be accessible by
public people. If anyone wants a printout they need to send document to library staff and only staff
system can print documents. In this way library staff will have access to documents and they can
avoid if anyone wants to print unwanted stuff.
Thus, by taking proper precautions and monitoring the library resources above

Advantages Of Virtual Library
Introduction
What is a virtual library? The term has been defined and explained by legion different people in
many different ways. It is a library where in the holdings are found in electronic stacks. It is a library
that exists without involving any physical space or any location. It is a technological way to bring
everything together the resources of different libraries and information services, both internal and
external, all in one, so users can find whatever they need quicker and easier than the normal way of
searching of books.
Sounds awesome, right? Well, the virtual library also has its hindrance and limitations. Schulyler
compares the virtual library to a popsicle, stating that: "If the electricity goes off, the cold goes away
– and so does the popsicle, leaving a soggy smear on the shelf where something substantial once
resided. The virtual library suffers the same vulnerability and the same precarious existence."

The Library Of The Modern Library
Libraries are an important resource, both to those who use them and to the area in which they reside.
Over the years, libraries have changed from being simple repositories of printed books and
materials. Instead, libraries now are home to ever changing technologies, community meeting
rooms, areas in which children can participate in a variety of activities, and a multitude of other
things, in addition to the previously housed print materials. As the Carnegie libraries of the past, and
other libraries, begin to become less well–suited to the mission of the modern library, it is possible
that many library directors may find themselves in a position of being asked to plan a new building.
This is a multi–faceted process which must be carefully considered in order to be a success. While
there is no such thing as a perfect library, one which has been carefully thought out and well–
designed may more easily gain acceptance by the community. Steps which must be taken are a
consideration of problems with the existing building, the creation of a building team, a thorough
assessment of needs, a determination of how much space is needed, selection of site location, the
design of the library, and a post–occupation evaluation. While working in an existing library, it may
not be immediately apparent to the librarian to what extent the current situation is not ideal. In order
to best see these problems, it is often beneficial to take a step back in order to better see the whole

A Library : My Home As A Library
In most towns or cities, you will find a library; whether it contains "old–school features", including
a card catalogue, a historian, and an old librarian shushing you for talking too loud, or it features
modern aspects, like usable iPads, eBooks, and lots of noise being made. The local library in my
town became my home as a child.
I enjoyed reading many books throughout my childhood, and there is no better place to read a book
than a library, which had become my favourite hobby. The book's release an exquisite ambiance, and
I found it very comfortable and cozy. At home, I lived in poverty, in government housing, and
without any father figure in my family, but at the library, I could pretend none of that was actually
happening, and I could lose myself in a book. I soon spent so much time at the library as a child that
I spent almost more time there than at my own house, which eventually led me to meet the library
director, Rachel Campbell. I found Rachel friendly, helpful, and little did I know, she would one day
become my best friend, despite the nineteen year age gap between us.
Once I grew to be around twelve years old, I would go into Rachel's office and discuss books with
her, as nobody else really ever read the same books that I did. Eventually, our discussions became
not just about books, but about our lives. I learned that Rachel came from the same situation as me,
yet she had worked her way through the ranks to get a degree in Library Science. Relief washed

Fayol's “Principles” in a University Library
In reading through Management Basics for Information Professionals by Evans and Ward, one of the
theories of management that stood out to me was the "administrative approach" (2007). Henry Fayol
was one of the main proponents of this approach, though there were many others as well. Fayol
"divided organizational activities into five major groups" and also identified 14 principles of
management and believed that "management is a skill one can learn, rather than a talent received at
birth" (Evans & Ward, 2007). In the context of my personal experience I found that it might be
interesting to compare my experiences as a student employee in the UC Berkeley library to some of
the more applicable aspects of Fayol's principles of management. I ... Show more content on

Another of Fayol's principles had to do with authority and responsibility. In the department of the
main stacks, there was a staff librarian who acted as our manager, as well as a group of students that
performed supervisory tasks. In my last year or so in the library I joined this group, and was given
the task of doing some of the day–to–day tasks that kept our department running. These included
opening and closing procedures, keeping statistics of the work done by students, assigning hourly
jobs, training, and so on. The important idea in this principle is that "giving orders and being
responsible must go together" (Evans & Ward, 2007). I would argue that in our department, while
we were responsible for making sure the work was done as well as assigning jobs, if there was a
difficult situation the supervisors were able to refer to the staff librarian for support. For example, if
one student was chronically underperforming or late, we would notify the librarian. If one
considered the group of supervisors plus the librarian who managed us to make up the
"management" of the department, then in whole authority and responsibility did go together. I would
also say that instead of thinking of student supervisors as not being as responsible as they could be,
it would be more plausible to say that the hourly assignment of jobs and other such tasks were ones
that were delegated to them by the librarian, because while he was more responsible, there was no
way that he could

Rural Libraries And Public Libraries
Rural libraries provide an information access point to those who live in remote areas. To define,
rural libraries are critical instruments for service areas of 25,00 or less. The social economic life of
population groups trend towards lower income and poverty. These forces constrict and curtail
patrons abilities for education, self– improvement and access to variety of information platforms.
In the course of this effort we will provide a brief survey of challenges that rural libraries
experience. We will convey patterns from computer network speeds, the lack of resources and
library programing. We will provide solutions with methods and aims provide the best possible
services for patrons living in outlining regions of the country
To begin, one challenge that we see that rural libraries are facing is lack of resources. According to
the freedictionary.com, lack means "lack, want, need, require indicate the absence of something
desirable, important, or necessary. lack means to be without or to have less than a desirable quantity
of something: to lack courage; to lack sufficient money". Resource is define by dictionary.com as,
" a source of supply, support, or aid, especially one that can be readily drawn upon when needed".
Living in a rural community and working in a rural library have given me the opportunity to see first
hand and the lack of resources that many rural libraries face. Many rural libraries are limited on the

Public Libraries and Technology
There are myriad ways a child may develop a love of reading, however in the modern era it seems
that this passion and hunger for not only knowledge but for the pure enjoyment derived from it has
been all but lost. I have children of my own that are not old enough to begin to approach about this
and most other children I see are too endeavored with their tablets, videogames and social media to
be concerned with it. I can therefore only speak from the one common frame of reference I have and
that is myself. In doing so, I will inform you of just how a child may develop a love of reading and
possibly shed some light on how children may come to have a love of reading even now.
I had a wonderful incentive in the form of a persistent grandmother whom would always shut the
television off and put a book in my hands. I claimed that I hated the time it took having to read these
boringly annoying things called words in no less an object made out of paper, but the experience
began to far outweigh the reservations I had about the activity at hand. I was started off with books
based on real life events. Not very interesting to a child indeed, but one aspect of children is their
curiosity and desire to know more, inquiring about the hows and whys of things, the way they are,
who was that and where did they come from. My own thirst for knowledge not only grew but
expanded beyond the simple trappings of my grandmother's personal collection and so she decided

CHAPTER I
PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
I. Introduction
Freeman Dyson has said, "Technology is a gift of God, after the gift of life; it is perhaps the greatest
of God's gift. It is the monitor civilizations of arts and sciences". With technology, they can get
things done precisely, efficiently and fast. Wireless communication devices keep you connected
wherever you go. These things were developed due to greater inventions and creativity of their
designers. But on the other hand, there are still places or institutions that have a slow growth of
development when it comes to advancement of technology. And one of these that caught the
proponent's attention is the library.
Years ago, every library used paper based catalogs for finding books, ... Show more content on

Censorship In Libraries
Everyone had their own opinions and views that they follow or believe in. Censorship can be used to
protect or enforce those opinions and views. Although, one persons beliefs might not agree with
another person and could cause conflict. Censorship in libraries is important so that respect is shown
to all its users. I believe materials promoting sexual content or drug/alcohol should be censored from
libraries. Libaries should censor materials containing inappropriate sexual content.Material that
promotes sexual actions should be censored, they are inappropriate and can cause conflict. Romance
genres can be accepted because they tell a story and some people enjoy reading these types of
books. Materials with half naked bodies are involved with

The Library Of Alexandria Campus Library

  • 1. The Library Of Alexandria Campus Library The main goal of libraries, are to teach students how to make use of the resources. The library of NVCC dedicates itself into helping students at the Alexandria campus. That is why it provides a wide range of sources that aids its students. Whether it is for a class, a job, or a research, the library has the materials they need to execute their work. In the words of Robert Putnam, a political scientist who teaches at Harvard University, he said that "People may go to the library looking mainly for information, but they find each other there." To clarify what is said, people may use the library for information; but due to the materials that they found in their research, they realize that if they made use of the library for their previous works, they would have met the requirements that were needed. The argument presented on this paper, is that the Alexandria campus library has a great effect on students in terms of helping them meet their academic goals. Although, there are some modifications it needs to make it better and more user friendly. One thing the NOVA library does, is that it gives students a connection to a greater academic community. There are fifty computers provided in the library for students to execute their work. Students can come in at anytime and make use of them. The staff at the library consists of twelve people, that are working to make a positive effect on those students who are making use of the library. Four of those people are faculty member, ... • 6. Library Collaboration Effective school librarians actively engage in collaboration with various entities to support students' educational growth. Teachers, administrators, architects, information technology, and the community are all possible partners of school librarians in supporting the advancement of student's education as well as ensuring that they become lifelong learners. However, school librarians must partner with germane sources that will help support the curriculum of the school. In the articles for Module Two, the utility of collaboration between school librarians, architects, teachers, and administrators is espoused. If school librarians make forming vital collaborations as one of their goals, then they will empower students, the community, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... School librarians and teachers can collaborate in instruction that will support school and national curriculum standards. Furthermore, school librarians who have expert knowledge of the schools' curriculum as well as national learning standards will be able to form more effective partnerships with teachers. Boyner (2015) asserts, "Knowing the school's overarching mission, individual department goals and objectives, as well as the guiding curricular framework is a crucial first step for winning teacher buy–in" (p.63). The collaboration between the school librarian and language arts faculty equipped high school students with many of the skills that they would need to perform successful college level research. For a school librarian to become a leader, they must collaborate with classroom teachers and gain their support for the School Library Program (SLP). The principal can be a school librarian's biggest advocate for the SLP or they can view the SLP program as a waste of funding that could be better spent on other resources. According to Lupton (52), "Principals said that they needed the funding invested in the teacher–librarian to be used for teaching. They pointed out that they could hire a library assistant to undertake the library functions" (52). Accordingly, school librarians need to demonstrate to school ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. School Library Vs. School Libraries The overall goal of any school library is to provide a space where students can grow and learn through the use of various information resources. School libraries, their funding and involvement in schools has changed in the past decades and continues to change and grow into the future. With the continual shift towards using more technology and the way in which we are consuming and using information only enhances the need for school libraries to continue to play a vital role in providing access to information and ideas for our students, teachers and schools. As technology continues to change and affect the needs of students and teachers, it is important for school libraries to embrace that change and participate in the change while still remembering their overall purpose and serving the students and community to the best of their ability. First, it is important to establish and understand the history, standards, and evolution of school libraries and school media specialists in the United States. School libraries have a history of constant change and fluctuating support. The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) became a subset of the American Library Association in 1951 (Taylor, 2015). Shortly thereafter, they published standards for school libraries that emphasized that school library media programs should be student centered, focusing on enriching the development of individual students. The school librarian's role should include that of teacher, being jointly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The school was founded in 1979 and was named after Norman Bethune; a well–known Canadian doctor. He was best known for his services during World War I and his dedication to helping the poor in Canada. Moreover, over these past few years, the school has prospered beautifully and has had many renovations and changes. For example, two years ago, the school's library had a huge makeover. The library was given new furniture to allow to have students a better working space. Similarly, the library moved shelves around in order to make it more convenient for everyone to access books. Ultimately, Dr. Norman Bethune C.I. has it in their best interest to provide students with the tools they need to succeed in education. • 12. Library Donation Books This summer I spent hours on the library's third floor, a large area used for storage since the 1970's; no air conditioning but lots of dust. I sorted through 177 boxes of books that were donated to the library. Library staff are not following the current donation policy and all donated books are given to the Friends Book Sale. Many books in my Adult Fiction section are in well–loved condition with water damage, broken spines and torn pages. Sorting through the boxes led to the addition of 300 adult fiction titles not owed by the library, example added a new copy of Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz. The donation books were used to replace 450 "loved books" with newer copies, example replaced a water damaged, broken spine copy of The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah with a brand new copy. My frustration leads me to search for information about how to handle book donations in a public library. I searched the Library and Information Source link on Clarion's online library page using the term "handling gift or donated books". I selected Kay Ann Cassell's article "Handling gift books in libraries: A view from the US." Cassell's article provides an overview of guidelines to be used in creating a gift book policy. A gift or donated book policy should be part of the library's Collection Development policy. Library staff are able to follow a policy that explains the purpose of the library's collection, what the library provides, who are library users and what types of materials are ... • 14. The Importance Of Technology In The Library Library has been a great source for information literacy. Being a cheap source and having books to read library were popular years ago and were one of the most used sources for education. Library had played huge role in promoting information literacy but, with the advancement in technology people are now open to a lot sources and on this run libraries were seem to be neglected due to the lack of updated information in the library. Libraries have gone through some necessary changes that have helped updating information available there. Technology is developing day by day. There is not a single question that Google does not have. We can find answers to each and every question in Google. But due to the limited space in library there are situations where we cannot find a book that is relevant with our topic. For instance, I wanted to know about current political situation in United States but the library has books only about the political history of United States then there is no use of reading the book. I would rather prefer going to the internet and searching about the political history in United States. This shows using technology can most of the time be beneficial and saves a lot of time. Closely looking the pros of using technical sources library has also started using computer as a part of library. This change that the library has bought has been beneficial to a lot of people as they can access to whichever source they want either the book or the information off the ... I will enlighten you all about the history, the destruction, and the advancements the world missed out on from the Ancient Library of Alexandria. What if I told you that in an instant, all the knowledge you know vanished. There is no evidence left. The advancements in the world would be at standstill. Relevance statement: Without the destruction of the Ancient Library of Alexandria, the technology advances would have been increased dramatically. I was in 2nd grade when I first heard about the Library and ever since I been intrigued. I want to share the knowledge I have gained by the research I have conducted. The destruction of the library was a great loss to the world; the knowledge was taken from the world and advancements were postponed. The library is still a great wonder to the world. First, I'm going to be discussing the history of the Library of Alexandria. Which was named after Alexandria the Great. According to the Ancient History Encyclopedia, "Demetrius of Phalerum envisioned a library that would house a copy of every book in the world." The library was established in the 3rd century of BC in Alexandria, Egypt. Egypt was a country of free thinkers. This was rare. During this time, many sciences and rebellious theories were forbidden. Therefore, many researchers wanted to go to the Museum and study. At first, its purpose was to show ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) within the National Foundation of the Arts and Humanities. The two programs were combined and established in September 30, 1996. The program has been in existence for the past twenty years and was incorporated by Legislation. The IMLS provides federal support for the nation's 123,000 libraries and 35,000 museums. The IMLS motto is Reimagine. In my own words establishing a museum and library in today's 21s century of technology and digital resources would be the new "REIMAGE". The research and evaluation of this program targets each state museum and library needs and what they have to offer to the community. The museum of my choice would be to create an Interactive Gallery Fashion Institute. There is a need of more youth fashion cultural awareness museums in Florida. The culture and selection of fashion defines who we are and how we behave as people. The first is that the Local History & Archives collection exists to "collect and preserve materials which illustrate the growth and development of Hamilton–Wentworth, both before and after incorporation, or which pertain in whole or in part to activities within the geographic boundaries of Hamilton–Wentworth" (HPL). • 24. The History Of The Library Profession John Ambrosio (2013), reflecting on the history of the library profession, invokes Antonio Gramsci, who said that a critical understanding of the self also requires the development of an ethical stance, a set of values, principles, and virtues to guide one's moral conduct (Ambrosio, 2013, p. 328). Lacking such ethics or praxis, librarians are vulnerable to the dominant political ideology. "The way to overcome paralysis is the consciousness of what one really is and knowing oneself. It begins with taking an inventory of our historical formation with determining how we have been secretly imprinted by history; how our language, thoughts and identities have been informed by various currents of philosophical thought and cultural practices" (Gramsci in Ambrosio, 2013, p. 328). By examining the history of the library profession – a history that conflates neutrality with equality and democracy, staffed by a cadre of professionals who trace their beginnings to a theory of "library economy" – it is easy to imagine how neoliberal ideology found a home in the library. Many theorists recognize the fact that librarians have the potential to make progressive reforms to society (Raber, 2003, p. 47), if they would only break free of the "contradictory theoretical consciousness" and hegemonic norms that hold them back from doing so by suggesting that they should take no action (Bales & Engle, 2012, p. 22). Louis Althusser (2009), in particular felt that librarians had a "social and moral ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 28. The Benefits Of Public Libraries As technology advances and progresses more, some people began to question the existence of public libraries and what value they'll hold in the future. More devices are being produced that can replace books, such as Kindles, Nooks, and other apps that can be downloaded on any portable electronic device. These devices, however, can't replace all that libraries can offer. Public libraries will still be in use and serve us in the future. These facilities still offer people internet access, services for children and families, and access to reading materials. First, public libraries offer people access to the internet and to computers. Many people believe the age of the Internet is what would shut down public libraries. However, not everyone has internet in their homes and rely on places, like their local public library, to provide internet and computer access. In an interview, Jorge said, "Our study of library computer users found that for 22 percent of library computer users (age 14 and older), that the library was their only access to computers and the Internet" (Source C). People still need public libraries to work on school work, online things for their jobs, or even just to relax and play an online game. The original purpose of libraries was not to offer internet, but libraries still serve a purpose and are in use. Secondly, public libraries offer services and activities for kids and families. According to the Brookline Public Schools website (PSBMA) Website– Runkle School, para.3) is a K–8 school that has about 560 students. The Runkle School is also a host to many Spanish English Language Learner students as well as the Reaching Independence through Structured Education program for children on the autistic spectrum. I observed Ms. Gallo–Toth introduce the library to sixth grade students as well as visit kindergarten classrooms to become acquainted with the kindergartners before their formal visit to the library. Furthermore, I observed an author and illustrator visit to first and second graders at the Martin Sleeper Library at the John D. Runkle School that derived from collaboration between Ms. Gallo– Toth and a local independent bookstore. Moreover, I increased my understanding of how a school library teacher employs collaboration and flexibility to administer the school library program. The culmination of my observations of Ms. Gallo–Toth highlighted how school library teachers have many roles within the school such as instruction, collaboration, promoting literacy, and as the school library program administrator. The first segment of my elementary school observation was observing Ms. Gallo–Toth introduced herself, the library, and routines and procedures to two sixth grade classes. The Grand Duchess Library: An Analysis Sometimes certain events in life have the most unpredictable outcomes; outcomes that break all norms and boundaries, morphing personality into something intricately fiendish, something beyond the comprehension of an ordinary person. Elijah Smith was one such example of a person who transcended these boundaries to delve into his craving for blood and gore. The look of helplessness in a dying man's eyes or the way blood rushed out of an open wound were just some of the things that fascinated Elijah. He was never the one to shy away from his curiosities and from a young age the man expanded his palate, encompassing the unorthodox until all that was left inside him was a demon who looked for gruesome ways to do the devil's bidding. Merely killing someone or inflicting pain wasn't his agenda. No, it was far more artistic and complicated than that. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was at this time that Elijah sat in the sanctuary of the library, writing on a rectangular piece of parchment, light sienna in shade and deep in its tone. Dark ink flowed smoothly out onto the piece of parchment, intricately forming letters into a fancy cursive writing. He was using a quill paired with an inkpot. Once the first message was written, he blew on the ink, making sure it was dry. His deep azure eyes shimmered with delight while he read his written work for the last time before placing it between the pages of an unpopular novel that very few seemed to be interested in. A great deal of people in society believe that with the rise of technology, libraries should not be so prominent although they continue to provide very important resources. "22 percent of library computer users (age 14 and older), the library was their only source for access to computers and the Internet" (Source C). Lastly, the author adds, that libraries contribute greatly to their community by offering digital reading access as well by letting patrons rent out e–reading devices (Shank, What Is the Role of Libraries in the Age of EBooks and Digital Information?). In today's society we observe the changes that have occurred throughout time; one of them being technology. Technology has infiltrated every aspect in our lives and it has changed the way we access and receive information, which presents major challenges and opportunities for public library systems across the world. These new technologies have changed our reading habits, but our need for public space to find information and connect with others is unlikely to change any time soon. Researchers have consistently found that pleasure reading increases throughout childhood and begins to decline, usually at age twelve to thirteen. Howard, V. (2009). Unfortunately, few researchers have explored the specific reasons for this decline from the perspective of teens themselves. Even fewer still have explored the role that reading for pleasure plays in the lives of young teens. Public libraries focus simultaneously on improving services to teen patrons and to pleasure readers of all ages as key to strategies to maintain importance and competitive advantage in the "age of Google." (p. 298). One of the most significant barriers in the reading decline is difficulties selecting appealing reading materials. (p.299). This particular study was collected using focus group questions with 249 completed surveys out of the 900 sent to junior high school students. There were several factors that effected teen reading and usage of library services. Teens did not view library staff as a useful source of readers' advisory. Teens describe their lives as very busy, leaving little time to read for pleasure. The library is a space that we are familiar with and expected to be comfortable with. It is a space where students can find books, study, collaborate, use computers, and print materials. Our understanding of the library is limited to it being a quiet, respected, and organized space. However, we instead, wanted to explore the unfamiliar, the unexpected, and uncomfortable aspects of the library. We'd like to explore its "volumes, colours, light, sounds, and smells" and be in dialogue with these matters (Reggio Children, 2011). The entrance to the library played a huge role on how we understand this place. We had expectations, from previous experience, of how the library will be. According to Giamminuti (2013), "what one feels and views when entering a school can influence what one then perceives as one's role within that school, one's relationship to others, and what one eventually comes to know about the school" (p. 53). Non profit. Funding. In order for the library to function beyond the limits of its normal paid staff, the library relies on a large volunteer reserve of 75 volunteers. This library functions like many other libraries in its input, throughput, and output. It is most likely a non–profit organization that is funded by sources such as taxes, grants, and private benefactors. Managing a lot of individuals can cause frustration for the selected employee who is managing the volunteers, thus disturbing morale in the workplace. The most practical solution for this management case would be to choose three to four serious, eligible and qualified volunteers to become Volunteer Coordinators. Each Volunteer Coordinator would be assigned to one section of the library e.g. circulation, technical services, or outreach and so on. They would be liaising with staff from the designated section, creating a list of projects and tasks that could be fulfilled by the volunteer. Previous communication issues would more than likely be solved between staff and volunteer coordinators. The Volunteer Coordinators would then select which category of the library volunteers would work, dividing them up evenly as possible. It is a technological way to bring everything together the resources of different libraries and information services, both internal and external, all in one, so users can find whatever they need quicker and easier than the normal way of searching of books. Sounds awesome, right? Well, the virtual library also has its hindrance and limitations. Schulyler compares the virtual library to a popsicle, stating that: "If the electricity goes off, the cold goes away – and so does the popsicle, leaving a soggy smear on the shelf where something substantial once resided. The virtual library suffers the same vulnerability and the same precarious existence." (Michael ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 66. The Library Of The Modern Library Libraries are an important resource, both to those who use them and to the area in which they reside. Over the years, libraries have changed from being simple repositories of printed books and materials. Instead, libraries now are home to ever changing technologies, community meeting rooms, areas in which children can participate in a variety of activities, and a multitude of other things, in addition to the previously housed print materials. As the Carnegie libraries of the past, and other libraries, begin to become less well–suited to the mission of the modern library, it is possible that many library directors may find themselves in a position of being asked to plan a new building. This is a multi–faceted process which must be carefully considered in order to be a success. While there is no such thing as a perfect library, one which has been carefully thought out and well– designed may more easily gain acceptance by the community. Steps which must be taken are a consideration of problems with the existing building, the creation of a building team, a thorough assessment of needs, a determination of how much space is needed, selection of site location, the design of the library, and a post–occupation evaluation. While working in an existing library, it may not be immediately apparent to the librarian to what extent the current situation is not ideal. In order to best see these problems, it is often beneficial to take a step back in order to better see the whole picture and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 68. A Library : My Home As A Library In most towns or cities, you will find a library; whether it contains "old–school features", including a card catalogue, a historian, and an old librarian shushing you for talking too loud, or it features modern aspects, like usable iPads, eBooks, and lots of noise being made. The local library in my town became my home as a child. I enjoyed reading many books throughout my childhood, and there is no better place to read a book than a library, which had become my favourite hobby. The book's release an exquisite ambiance, and I found it very comfortable and cozy. At home, I lived in poverty, in government housing, and without any father figure in my family, but at the library, I could pretend none of that was actually happening, and I could lose myself in a book. I soon spent so much time at the library as a child that I spent almost more time there than at my own house, which eventually led me to meet the library director, Rachel Campbell. I found Rachel friendly, helpful, and little did I know, she would one day become my best friend, despite the nineteen year age gap between us. Once I grew to be around twelve years old, I would go into Rachel's office and discuss books with her, as nobody else really ever read the same books that I did. Eventually, our discussions became not just about books, but about our lives. I learned that Rachel came from the same situation as me, yet she had worked her way through the ranks to get a degree in Library Science. Relief washed over ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 70. Fayol's “Principles” in a University Library In reading through Management Basics for Information Professionals by Evans and Ward, one of the theories of management that stood out to me was the "administrative approach" (2007). Henry Fayol was one of the main proponents of this approach, though there were many others as well. Fayol "divided organizational activities into five major groups" and also identified 14 principles of management and believed that "management is a skill one can learn, rather than a talent received at birth" (Evans & Ward, 2007). In the context of my personal experience I found that it might be interesting to compare my experiences as a student employee in the UC Berkeley library to some of the more applicable aspects of Fayol's principles of management. I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another of Fayol's principles had to do with authority and responsibility. In the department of the main stacks, there was a staff librarian who acted as our manager, as well as a group of students that performed supervisory tasks. In my last year or so in the library I joined this group, and was given the task of doing some of the day–to–day tasks that kept our department running. These included opening and closing procedures, keeping statistics of the work done by students, assigning hourly jobs, training, and so on. The important idea in this principle is that "giving orders and being responsible must go together" (Evans & Ward, 2007). I would argue that in our department, while we were responsible for making sure the work was done as well as assigning jobs, if there was a difficult situation the supervisors were able to refer to the staff librarian for support. For example, if one student was chronically underperforming or late, we would notify the librarian. If one considered the group of supervisors plus the librarian who managed us to make up the "management" of the department, then in whole authority and responsibility did go together. I would also say that instead of thinking of student supervisors as not being as responsible as they could be, it would be more plausible to say that the hourly assignment of jobs and other such tasks were ones that were delegated to them by the librarian, because while he was more responsible, there was no way that he could ... • 72. Rural Libraries And Public Libraries Rural libraries provide an information access point to those who live in remote areas. To define, rural libraries are critical instruments for service areas of 25,00 or less. The social economic life of population groups trend towards lower income and poverty. These forces constrict and curtail patrons abilities for education, self– improvement and access to variety of information platforms. In the course of this effort we will provide a brief survey of challenges that rural libraries experience. We will convey patterns from computer network speeds, the lack of resources and library programing. We will provide solutions with methods and aims provide the best possible services for patrons living in outlining regions of the country To begin, one challenge that we see that rural libraries are facing is lack of resources. According to the freedictionary.com, lack means "lack, want, need, require indicate the absence of something desirable, important, or necessary. lack means to be without or to have less than a desirable quantity of something: to lack courage; to lack sufficient money". Resource is define by dictionary.com as, " a source of supply, support, or aid, especially one that can be readily drawn upon when needed". • 74. Public Libraries and Technology There are myriad ways a child may develop a love of reading, however in the modern era it seems that this passion and hunger for not only knowledge but for the pure enjoyment derived from it has been all but lost. I have children of my own that are not old enough to begin to approach about this and most other children I see are too endeavored with their tablets, videogames and social media to be concerned with it. I can therefore only speak from the one common frame of reference I have and that is myself. In doing so, I will inform you of just how a child may develop a love of reading and possibly shed some light on how children may come to have a love of reading even now. I had a wonderful incentive in the form of a persistent grandmother whom would always shut the television off and put a book in my hands. I claimed that I hated the time it took having to read these boringly annoying things called words in no less an object made out of paper, but the experience began to far outweigh the reservations I had about the activity at hand. I was started off with books based on real life events. Not very interesting to a child indeed, but one aspect of children is their curiosity and desire to know more, inquiring about the hows and whys of things, the way they are, who was that and where did they come from. My own thirst for knowledge not only grew but expanded beyond the simple trappings of my grandmother's personal collection and so she decided to bring me to a public library ... It is the monitor civilizations of arts and sciences". With technology, they can get things done precisely, efficiently and fast. Wireless communication devices keep you connected wherever you go. These things were developed due to greater inventions and creativity of their designers. • 81. Censorship In Libraries Everyone had their own opinions and views that they follow or believe in. Censorship can be used to protect or enforce those opinions and views. Although, one persons beliefs might not agree with another person and could cause conflict. Censorship in libraries is important so that respect is shown to all its users. I believe materials promoting sexual content or drug/alcohol should be censored from libraries. Libaries should censor materials containing inappropriate sexual content.Material that promotes sexual actions should be censored, they are inappropriate and can cause conflict. Romance genres can be accepted because they tell a story and some people enjoy reading these types of books. Materials with half naked bodies are involved with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
