The Kite Runner is Hosseini's debut novel about Amir, a Pashtun boy growing up in Kabul, Afghanistan. Throughout his childhood, Amir has everything except his father's love and acceptance, while Hassan, the son of Amir's Hazara servants, is his loyal friend. They enjoy kite fighting festivals until one day, when Hassan is raped after fetching a kite for Amir. Amir feels lifelong guilt for not helping Hassan. After the Soviet invasion, Amir and his father flee to California. Years later, Amir returns to Kabul to adopt Hassan's orphaned son Sohrab, seeking to atone for his past sins.
