What is history?
IT IS A SOCIAL SCIENCE THAT DEALS
WITH THE STUDY OF LIFE IN SOCIETY IN
THE PAST. EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED
IN THE PAST.
Written History
history that has been
written down and
preserved throughout
time.
Oral history
history which has
been passed on by
work of mouth such
as through stories or
songs
Who study history?
Historians
 are like detectives who use clues to discover what occurred
in the past.
 They study, record, write about, and interpret human
experience of the past.
Anthropologist
 are people that practice anthropology, which is the study of
humanity
 study human culture (both past and present).
Culture
 is the way of life of a society which is handed down from
one generation to the next through learning and experience
 includes the beliefs, values, and practices of a people.
Sociologist
 study the relationships between individuals and
groups
 Ex. Social institutions (such as families, school and
churches), social problems (crime, race relations,
poverty), social classes.
Geographers
 study the earth and how people interact with it.
 Human characteristics- such as buildings, roads, bridges,
and man -made lakes.
 Physical characteristics- such as mountains, oceans, lakes
beaches, rivers, wildlife, soil, and hills.
Archeologists
 study past people and cultures through finding and analyzing
material remains of human cultures. They dig through dirt at sites in
search of clues.
 Artifacts – anything made by human such as tools, coins, building,
weapon, pottery, clothes, and artwork.
 Fossils – the remains of the living things (plants, animals and
people) not things that were made.
Political Scientist
study
government and
politics.
Econimist
 study the
production and
distribution of
scarce
resources,
goods and
services.

Primary Source:
 first hand or eyewitness
accounts of an event
 experienced the event
 subject to different
interpretation
Secondary Source:
secondhand records of what
happened
