The Internet and the
World Wide Web
Using new and developing
technologies, even beginner web
developers can create professional
– looking websites that include
multimedia, social media, and
dynamic content viewable on
various devices and screen sizes.
Website should be?
•A website that effectively communicates.
•Educates.
•Entertains.
•Provide a venue of for conducting business
transactions with good web design
Five Essential Elements
1. A Strong, Clear Message on the Home Page
2. Content that Helps Your Visitors
3. Effective Calls to Action
4. A Great ‘About’ Page
5. A Blog
The Network
A computer network consist of connected
computers, mobile devices, printers, and
data storage devices that share computing
resources and data.
•A computer network is a digital
telecommunications network which allows
nodes to share resources.
•In computer networks, computing devices
exchange data with each other using
connections between nodes (data links).
These data links are established over cable
media such as wires or optic cables, or
wireless media such as WiFi.
What are the resources that can be share
through network?
• Files
• Applications or software
• Digital audio
• Storage servers
• Printers
• Email
• Instant messages
How the internet developed?
• In the late 1950s, early networks of
computers included the U.S. military
radar system (Semi – Automatic Ground
Environment) SAGE
SAGE
•Sage is the name selected to mean “wise”.
•It is a system of large computers and
associated networking equipment that
coordinated data from many radar sites and
processed it to produce a single unified
image of airspace over a wide area.
ARPANET
•The ARPANET was a project funded by the U.S.
government during the Cold War, in order to build a
robust and reliable communications network.
•This was done by connecting various computers that
could simultaneously communicate in a network that
would not go down and continue running when a
single node was taken out.
The Computers
Vacuum Tubes
•It is first developed by John Ambrose
Fleming in 1904.
•The vacuum tube is a glass tube that has its
gas removed, creating a vacuum. The
vacuum tubes contain electrodes for
controlling electron flow and were used in
early computer as switch or an amplifier.
Universal Automatic Computer
UNIVAC
It is an electrical computer
containing thousands of vacuum
tubes that utilizes punch cards for
outputting and storing data.
•The UNIVAC I was the first
American computer designed at the
outset for business and
administrative use with fast
execution of relatively simple
arithmetic and data transport
operations, as opposed to the
complex numerical calculations
Electronic Numeric Integrator
Automatic Computer
ENIAC
•It was the first electronic computer used for
general purposes, such as solving numerical
problems.
•The ENIAC was created to help with the war
effort against german forces.
The First Programmer
•Augusta Ada King-Noel, Countess of Lovelace (née
Byron; 10 December 1815 – 27 November 1852) was an
English mathematician and writer, chiefly known for her
work on Charles Babbage's proposed mechanical
general-purpose computer, the Analytical Engine. She
was the first to recognise that the machine had
applications beyond pure calculation, and published the
first algorithm intended to be carried out by such a
machine. As a result, she is sometimes regarded as the
first to recognise the full potential of a "computing
machine" and the first computer programmer.
•Alan Turing was a British scientist
and a pioneer in computer science.
During World War II, he developed
a machine that helped break the
German Enigma code. He also laid
the groundwork for modern
computing and theorized about
artificial intelligence.
The Internet
• The internet is a world wide public network that
connects millions of these private networks.
• Example: On a college campus , the student lab
network, the faculty computer network, and
administration network all can connect to the
internet.
The internet was initially developed to aid in the
progress of computing technology by linking all
the best academic computer centers.
The internet is a worldwide public network that
links private networks and gives users access to a
variety of resources for communication,
research, file sharing and commerce.
Are the Internet and the Web
the same thing?
The World Wide Web
• The world wide web is a part of the
internet that consists of connected
computers called web servers that store
electronic documents called webpages.
• A webpage is a specially formatted
document that can contain images text,
interactive elements and hyperlinks.
What is HYPERLINK?
•A link is a word, phrase, or image that
connects webpages.
•A webpages or website is a group of related
webpages and its primary page or
homepage, typically provides information
about the website’s purpose and content.
Pic of homepage
Homepage with links
Who originally created world
wide web?
Historians credit Tim Berners – Lee, a
programmer at CERN in Switzerland, with
the early vision and technological
development that led to today’s World
Wide Web.
Browsing
•Browsing or surfing the web is exploring by
moving from one page to another.
•To visually indicate that you have previously
clicked a text link, the color of the text link
might change.
Is the internet’s societal
influence all good?
In the past, employees’ workdays were
done when they physically left the home.
Anxiety, sadness and depression: Teens who
spend most of their time in the virtual world
gradually move away from the real world
and start living in a world of fantasy. After a
certain period, they become dependent on
the Internet to feel upbeat. And, when they
are unable to access the Internet, they start
experiencing anxiety, sadness and
depression.
• Unable to keep schedules: Teens use the
Internet to do a lot of things like looking for
information, corresponding, paying bills, and
doing financial transactions. However, in the
case of Internet addicts, they spend most of
their time engaged in browsing, chatting or
gaming, instead of doing what they are actually
supposed to do. Also, they are unable to keep
track of the time they spend in doing such
activities. As a result, they are not able to keep
up with their schedules.
•Sleep deprivation: Most teens nowadays own
smartphones and/or tablets, which they carry with
them wherever they go, even to the bed. They also
use these devices to hook on to the Internet before
going to sleep to catch up on what’s happening
around them. While normal teens may log off after a
while, those addicted to the Internet keep browsing
for long hours. As a result, they suffer sleep-related
issues like late sleep time, insufficient or restless
sleep, and late waking time. This sleep
deprivation/disturbance can also worsen or magnify
symptoms of anxiety and depression.
•Social isolation: Those who spend a lot of
time on the Internet tend to become a part of
one or several online communities. They end
up developing close friendships or intimate
relationships with a lot of individuals. To
remain connected with these individuals,
Internet addicts stay online for long hours.
Owing to such behavior, Internet addicts
often end up isolating themselves from their
families and peers.
• Dishonesty and lying: Almost all Internet addicts
understand that they have a problem. However,
when confronted or questioned by family
members, friends or employers, they try to
conceal their habit. They try to do this by either
lying or being dishonest about the time they
spend on the Internet.
•Mood changes: Internet addicts use the
Internet to reduce their stress and boost
their mood. They feel happy or euphoric
when they are connected to the Internet.
However, if they have to stop using the
Internet or are unable to access it, they
become gloomy or irritated and angry.
Influence on Society
•The internet and the web have influenced
the way the world communicates, educates,
entertains, and conducts business
significantly.
• Friends, families, and business
colleagues electronically exchange
messages, documents, and information
using texting, email, collaborative
workspaces, and chat programs.
• Students use the web for research,
to access the Internet and the web
for entertainment using gaming,
music, video and other application
on their computers or mobile
devices.
• Consumer who shop online can save
time, gas, and sometimes money by
taking advantage of online shopping
websites and websites that offer
reviews and pricing comparisons.
• Businesses use Internet and web
technologies to interact with their
suppliers and customers for increased
productivity and profitability.
• Also can use tools such as video
conferencing to reduce costs associated
with business travel or to allow
employees to telecommute.
COMMUNICATION
•Individuals and organizations of all types
use websites to communicate ideas and
information.
•By effectively designing webpages and
selectively choosing content, you can
ensure that your website’s webpages
deliver the website’s message successfully
and persuasively.
• Businesses relies on electronic
messages called email.
The Blog
A blog or short for weblog, such as What’s
Your Brave?, is an online journal or diary.
Millions of people go online to share ideas
and information by hosting and participating
in blogs – a process called blogging.
• Many blogs enable and encourage users
to add comments to posts.
• Video sharing websites, such as youtube
and vimeo, allow users to share and
comment on personal and professional
videos and also feature video blogs
(Vlogs)
Social Networking
• It is a term used to describe websites
and apps, such as Twitter, Instagram,
Facebook, and LinkedIn, that allow
participants to create a personal
network of friends or business contacts.
Social Bookmarking
• Provided by websites such as Delicious,
Pinterest, and Digg, allows users to
share their webpage favorites, news
articles, bookmarks, and tags (keywords
that reference specific images or
documents – with others).
EDUCATION
Many universities and academic
institutions, such as DLSU and MAPUA,
publish some or all of their educational
materials online, including homework
and video lectures, so they are free and
open to everyone.
A Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is
an online course delivered over the web,
often for free. Many MOOC’s are self
guided, but others offer interactive user
forums and provide virtual assistance and
other resources.
