Cases involving ethical dilemmas can often be examined using a simple reference checklist. While cases in a value-laden area such as ethics generate diverse opinions, the use of the analytical structure detailed below is instructive. The parameters explained become a checklist for analysis in discussions in ethics and related areas.
Principle: Examine an action or decision in terms of its basic value principles. This is an examination in deontological terms. For instance, has the individual been truthful or are facts falsified? Has the individual been straightforward or deceptive?
Legality: What does the letter of the law specify? Examine the issue from a legal perspective.
Intent: What was the intent? Was it to deceive? Was it to violate the law? Was it to cause harm? For instance, while the consequence of an accident may be death, it is not treated as the same as first degree murder, which involves the intent to kill. To consider another example, there may be an error in tax procedures and documentation that may be against the law by itself, yet there may be no tax evasion, or intent to evade taxes.
Consequence: Examine the impact or consequence of the decision; this is a teleological perspective. Did it do widespread damage? Did it harm anyone, and, if so, to what extent?
Consequence on the Perceptions of the External Publics: How do external publics perceive the decision or action. For instance, animal based research can negatively influence the image of a cosmetic manufacturer.
Consequence on the Perceptions of the Internal Publics: How does the action or decision affect the publics within the organization? For instance: Does a one-time acceptance of an unethical research practice, lead to a situation where researchers repeatedly start seeking an easy way out, and possibly concocting data? Does an acceptance of giving bribes reduce the accountability of the sales force? In this case, is the organization paying its sales force to make a sales effort or to give bribes?
Awareness and Involvement: How aware of the facts and how involved with the decisions was the individual under judgment? Was the individual actively involved or passively aware? Remotely connected or highly instrumental?

Conflict between a society's dominant and minority groups is nearly always rooted in the structured inequality of access to scarce and valued resources. In the United States and most industrialized Western nations, economic resources are at the center of the conflict. Society's most powerful members are predominantly from the dominant group, and it is they who make and shape the values, ideals, goals, and means of achievement for the rest of society. Problems begin to arise, though, when these values, ideals, goals, and means of achievement become barriers to resources for some groups and gateways for others. Those for whom they are gateways are understandably protective of their advantage, and those for whom they are barriers become frustrated and discontented. What is most unfortunate is that both sides generally lose sight of the structural nature of the system and instead fall back on stereotypes and ideology. The dominant group places the blame for disadvantage on the disadvantaged, based on assumptions about group characteristics such as lack of motivation, cultural preferences, or other victim-blaming ideas. On the other side, resistance to change and a seeming refusal to open the doors of opportunity are interpreted as racist or sexist attempts to deny them their rights, strategies to oppress and exploit them, or simple hatred. While arguments for and against both sides can be made, none are very useful in addressing the real issue – inequality itself and its costs to the society at large.

The purpose of this essay is to teach you to observe the significance of items on the landscape and to demonstrate mastery of the 5 main themes of geography. The cultural landscape reveals much about the values, history, and identity of a location. The association of the landscape with a particular area is a hallmark of human behavior and one with potentially serious consequences. Often, the very things that people correlate with this sense of “home” are actually a reflection of the 5 main themes of geography. You must address the following sections in this 2–3-page essay. Y
ou may not count a cover page and/or reference pages towards the 2–3-page minimum.
This assignment must conform to current APA formatting.

You must stroll through an area near your home considered to be a noteworthy area, such as a city or county seat of local significance. Pay particular attention to the landscape and describe what you see. For the purposes of this activity, landscape means any natural items (trees, mountains, etc.) or indications of human imprint (signs, buildings, statues) that appear vertically to the human eye and block the horizon. Describe the items that have made a particular impact or are of importance to your town or area.

How do the items described lead you to identify with this particular area, and what items on the landscape do you identify with as being key sights or landmarks you associate with home? What sense of past and present values are expressed in this human imprint, or how has the natural landscape affected the human imprint you have observed?

After identifying the features on the landscape and by describing what makes this area unique in terms of physical and human geography, you must look for any indications on the cultural landscape that can be described in terms of the 5 main themes of geography. For example, a railroad crossing may be a reflection of the movement theme. According to the theme of location, road signs on a landscape direct traffic a certain way. Are there tall buildings that reflect the value of real estate in terms of relative location to a particular business district? The theme of place could also be the explanation for the price of real estate.

An Approach to Text Cases with Ethical Dilemmas and Decisions
Cases involving ethical dilemmas can often be examined using a simple reference checklist. While cases in a value-laden area such as ethics generate diverse opinions, the use of the analytical structure detailed below is instructive. The parameters explained become a checklist for analysis in discussions in ethics and related areas.
Principle: Examine an action or decision in terms of its basic value principles. This is an examination in deontological terms. For instance, has the individual been truthful or are facts falsified? Has the individual been straightforward or deceptive?
Legality: What does the letter of the law specify? Examine the issue from a legal perspective.
Intent: What was the intent? Was it to deceive? Was it to violate the law? Was it to cause harm? For instance, while the consequence of an accident may be death, it is not treated as the same as first degree murder, which involves the intent to kill. To consider another example, there may be an error in tax procedures and documentation that may be against the law by itself, yet there may be no tax evasion, or intent to evade taxes.
Consequence: Examine the impact or consequence of the decision; this is a teleological perspective. Did it do widespread damage? Did it harm anyone, and, if so, to what extent?
Consequence on the Perceptions of the External Publics: How do external publics perceive the decision or action. For instance, animal based research can negatively influence the image of a cosmetic manufacturer.
Consequence on the Perceptions of the Internal Publics: How does the action or decision affect the publics within the organization? For instance: Does a one-time acceptance of an unethical research practice, lead to a situation where researchers repeatedly start seeking an easy way out, and possibly concocting data? Does an acceptance of giving bribes reduce the accountability of the sales force? In this case, is the organization paying its sales force to make a sales effort or to give bribes?
Awareness and Involvement: How aware of the facts and how involved with the decisions was the individual under judgment? Was the individual actively involved or passively aware? Remotely connected or highly instrumental?

Conflict between a society's dominant and minority groups is nearly always rooted in the structured inequality of access to scarce and valued resources. In the United States and most industrialized Western nations, economic resources are at the center of the conflict. Society's most powerful members are predominantly from the dominant group, and it is they who make and shape the values, ideals, goals, and means of achievement for the rest of society. Problems begin to arise, though, when these values, ideals, goals, and means of achievement become barriers to resources for some groups and gateways for others. Those for whom they are gateways are understandably protective of their advantage, and those for whom they are barriers become frustrated and discontented. What is most unfortunate is that both sides generally lose sight of the structural nature of the system and instead fall back on stereotypes and ideology. The dominant group places the blame for disadvantage on the disadvantaged, based on assumptions about group characteristics such as lack of motivation, cultural preferences, or other victim-blaming ideas. On the other side, resistance to change and a seeming refusal to open the doors of opportunity are interpreted as racist or sexist attempts to deny them their rights, strategies to oppress and exploit them, or simple hatred. While arguments for and against both sides can be made, none are very useful in addressing the real issue – inequality itself and its costs to the society at large.

economics, power,

prestige
. Collectively, we refer to them as our
socioeconomic
status, and it is determined by how and where these three dimensions intersect and diverge. Our access to these dimensions is largely a matter of our
ascribed
or
achieved
