The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus include NFC hardware to support Apple Pay for contactless payments, but the NFC chip cannot currently be accessed by third-party apps for other uses. While the NFC feature is present, Apple will only allow it to be used for its own Apple Pay system at launch and developers cannot utilize NFC in their apps. This limited functionality may change in the future, as Apple has opened other features like Touch ID to developers, but for now the NFC is locked down to Apple Pay exclusively.
