The Hunger Project was founded in 1977 to tackle world hunger problems. It has reinvented itself over the years to meet new challenges in ending hunger. The organization's vision is a world where all people live fulfilling, healthy, and self-reliant lives with dignity. Its mission is to end hunger and poverty through sustainable, women-centered community development strategies and grassroots advocacy. The Hunger Project believes in human dignity, empowerment through self-reliance, and transformative leadership that awakens communities to solve their own problems. It encourages individuals to support its cause through activism, donations, volunteering, and spreading awareness.

The Hunger Project was founded in 1977, to tackle world
hunger problems.
Over the years, The Hunger Project has reinvented itself
time and again to meet each challenge along the path of
ending hunger.

Mary Ellen McNish joined The Hunger Project (THP)
as President and CEO in September 2010.
Mary Ellen has 35 years of progressive leadership
experience in non-profit business settings, including
as Executive Director of Development at Weill
Medical College of Cornell University and New York
Presbyterian Hospital, and Executive Vice President
of Planned Parenthood of Maryland.

Earlier in her career, she worked as a
teacher and parent educator, and
managed children's and women's
programs, including spouse abuse
prevention.

• All human beings are born free and equal in
dignity and rights, including the right to food,
health, work and education. The inherent nature
of every person is creative, resourceful, selfreliant, responsible and productive. We must not
treat people living in conditions of hunger as
beneficiaries, which can crush dignity, but rather
as the key resource for ending hunger.

In the face of social suppression, focused
and sustained action is required to
awaken people to the possibility of selfreliance, to build confidence, and to
organize communities to take charge of
their own development.

• Ending hunger requires a new kind of
leadership: not top-down, authority-based
leadership, but leadership that awakens
people to their own power — leadership
“with” people rather than leadership “over”
