Jacob Davis, a tailor, partnered with Levi Strauss to create sturdy denim pants reinforced with copper rivets for laborers in 1873, inventing the first blue jeans. Jeans originated from jeane/jean cloth from Genoa, Italy and were first worn by workers in the American West. Over 100 years, jeans transformed from functional workwear to a symbol of rebellion and youth culture worn worldwide today, with over 450 million pairs sold in the US each year.
