Capoeira originated in Brazil as a way for enslaved Africans to disguise their fighting skills training as a dance. It later evolved into a martial art and cultural expression. In the early 20th century, Mestre Bimba helped popularize a standardized form of Capoeira known as Regional, while Mestre Pastinha preserved the traditional Angola style. Both masters opened academies that helped spread Capoeira around Brazil and the world.
