Greek Easter is the most important religious holiday in Greece. It is celebrated in the spring with beautiful weather. Traditional customs include dyeing eggs red, baking tsourekia bread, and decorating churches. On Good Friday, there are somber processions carrying symbolic biers. Midnight services on Holy Saturday involve candles and the sharing of light. People greet each other saying "Christ has risen" and share meals of lamb, eggs, and soup. Various villages have their own unique celebrations, like rocket launching contests on Chios or dances in Ierissos.

Thank you for the update George. I appreciate you bringing this initiative to my attention and am supportive of efforts to highlight the good works of our parishioners. However, as rector I have some concerns about the parish directly endorsing or financially supporting external charitable causes without a more thorough vetting and oversight process. Perhaps we could discuss this further and explore alternative ways the parish might help raise awareness of these important issues and the charitable activities of individuals, while maintaining appropriate boundaries. Please feel free to contact me to schedule a time to discuss.

The Sacred Space and Grounds Committee at Christ Church Deer Park was formed to review and make recommendations to improve the exterior and interior of the church building to make it more attractive and welcoming as part of the Re-Imagining Church initiative. The committee identified several areas that could be improved, such as landscaping, signage, lighting, and creating a more open and adaptable space. They submitted a funding application which was accepted to commission a professional study by an architect or consultant. The consultant will assess the committee's ideas and provide design recommendations with the goal of completing a feasibility report by April 2014. The committee welcomes input from parishioners on ways to enhance the church's physical spaces.
The document describes several spiritual practices and initiatives being developed at CCDP. The Contemplative Knitting Circle meets biweekly for needlework, readings, and optional discussion to build community in a non-judgmental space. A labyrinth workshop is planned in December to experience the prayerful practice of walking a portable labyrinth. Further initiatives aim to train a labyrinth facilitator, examine the spirituality in the music at CCDP, and hold a Bible study series potentially leading to a pilgrimage to study sites in the Holy Land.
This committee was tasked with identifying areas of lay ministry. They prioritized four areas: Bible study, pastoral care, missionary work, and prayers of the people. They focused on starting Bible study sessions before Christmas and Easter with attendance ranging from 2 to 15. The top priority was pastoral care, now called congregational care, which involves friendly and pastoral visits. They believe growing this program will help the church grow as word spreads about how they care for members. Currently 22 people attended meetings to be caring visitors and 12 completed pastoral training. Teams have been assigned and a process established to provide care and track those receiving visits.
This document discusses a proposed vocational skills institute in Jinja, Uganda. It would be built to help young adults from the Mama Jane's Children's Care Centre learn skills like welding, carpentry, tailoring, and IT. This would help them find jobs and live independently after aging out of the orphanage. The $25,000 startup cost has been donated by a fund. Supporting this project would enrich the lives of the donors by allowing them to visit Uganda, see the impact of the institute firsthand, and strengthen their faith. It would also bring positive attention and potential new members to the donor's parish.
Three initiatives took place at Christ Church Deer Park in 2012 that have led to growth. First, parishioners participated in an open process to enhance the church through working groups. Five groups emerged focusing on spiritual practices, lay ministry, the sacred space, children, and welcoming. Second, the Our Faith Our Hope fundraising campaign exceeded its goal, raising the third highest amount in the diocese and securing $406,000 over 5 years. Funds were allocated through a committee process. Third, the Management Team has undertaken several initiatives including upgrading the website and technology, developing a code of conduct, and beginning a long-term capital planning process.
This document provides an overview and summary of activities from a parish forum discussing efforts to re-imagine the church and progress on an "Our Faith Our Hope" initiative. It seems that current missionary work requires spending a lot of money, preparing a lot of materials, and traveling to far away places, so that it feels like missionary work. But what was the result they brought back? It's just a lot of photos of activities, fun eating, drinking and some playing games. And then we have to do the same thing next year, never ending. The church once mentioned that a certain missionary would go to the field where she used to work before the end of his life. It seemed that if she had not gone, no one would be willing to go. The reason why these missionary work is so difficult is that no one obeys God’s words, and the Bible is not the main content during missionary work, because in the eyes of those who do not obey God’s words, the Bible is just words and cannot be connected with life, so Reading out God's words is boring because it doesn't have any life experience, so it cannot be connected with human life. I will give a few examples in the hope that this situation can be changed. A375
