The document compares and contrasts the 1974 and 2013 film adaptations of The Great Gatsby. While both films are based closely on the source material, they differ in their portrayals of characters, use of music fitting for the time period, and special effects. The 1974 version is considered more accurate to the 1920s setting, using authentic music and filming styles with fewer effects. The 2013 version captures the excitement of the novel but incorporates modern musical elements that make it less historically accurate. Overall, the movies take different creative approaches despite adapting the same story.

The Great Gatsby Similarities Between 1974 And 2003
1. The Great Gatsby Similarities Between 1974 And 2003
The 1974 and the 2013 Great Gatsby movies are both alike and different in many ways. The older
movie is more accurate to the time, used more genuine music, filming, and less special effects. The
new movie was more flashy, crazy, and captured the excitement and intensity of the novel. The
characters were portrayed by different actors; therefore, their interpretations differ as well. In
addition to these obvious disparities, both movies have various similarities as well. They are both
based pretty closely on the book written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and contain similar characters,
quotes/lines, and scenes, along with scenery. As a whole; however, both movies are far more
dissimilar to each other. The differences between the movies stem from the

Bob Marley and The Wailers: The Influence
Bob Marley and the Wailers were an influential reggae group from Jamaica. The group produced
music that was inspiration for the people of Jamaica. Both in their struggles for freedom and
equality. The one inspiration for the musicians was the teachings of Rastafarianism: a type of
monotheism religion. Monotheism literally means the belief in only one God. Rastafarians believe
in one God called Jah. They believe that Jah sent his son in the form of a man named Haile Selassie
I. Rastafarians also believe that speech is very important, because through speech they can feel the
presence and power of God. When the Wailers released their first record called "Simmer Down" it
sold over 80,000 copies ("Early Wailers"). Rastafarian teachings also influenced many of the later
albums the band would produce. Robert Nesta Marley and the Wailers developed great music full of
love and inspiration. The band produced music with strong messages, high energy performances
with proactive audiences, and high levels of performer engagement.
During the 1960 's Bob Marley and Neville Livingston crossed paths. Neville was known by another
name Bunny Wailer. Joe Higgs then set up an opportunity for them to meet Peter Macintosh while
taking singing lessons from Higgs. They grew close and at first called their group "Juveniles" but
brothers in the ghetto said. "You come from a place where people are always bawling, you should be

The "actors"who played "the different roles" weren't the same. The music they "used" is different

4. Immigration And Its Influence On American Culture
When it comes to America a lot of people seem to not agree on one culture that made America what
it is now. A very controversial subject is how immigration and their music affected what we call the
"American Culture". Let's begin with Immigration alone. Immigration is not bad for the country. In
fact, the country is a nation built on immigration "Successive waves of immigrants have kept our
country demographically young, enriched our culture and added to our productive capacity as a
nation, enhancing our influence in the world." (Daniel Griswold). Immigration has offered so much
to this nation for example music. Music now compared to what it was 20 years ago is different.

higher studies. It was just me who moved not my parents. I was kind of scared. I had to leave my
childhood friends, and I have never been away from my parents. At the same time I was excited to
live with my grandparents in America. Finally I moved to US with mixed emotions. I was here a
month before school started. During that one month span, my cousins started to give tips on how to
make friends in school, how to engage you in conversation and how to not be scared to talk in front
of the class. They also gave me an idea of how the school setting is going to be, so that I won't be
surprised or shocked. With all the tips and suggestions my cousins gave, I was confident enough to
start my first day of school in America. It was nice sunny day; I woke at 6:00 to get ready for
school. I practiced to introduce myself in front of the mirror for several times. So that it makes me
feel more confident and bold. I took a shower and had my breakfast. As I was dressing, I was

The definition of the 1970's is "Afros and feathered perms: Earth tones and platforms" according to

Many types of media were influenced by the history of the 70's including music. Music and history
had often been put together to express people's feeling towards events. In the 1970's music was
affected by the Watergate Scandal.
Many historical events took place in the 70's, for example, Elvis Presley passed away, the Kent State

New types of music were being made, new artists were being famous, and concerts became bigger
and better. Music of the 70's was "evolving from a combination of rhythm and blues, country and
pop music" (Stewart 76). Many new genres had been made and people added their own twist to
music as the 70's went on. Rock and roll was a huge thing in the 70's along with disco, heavy metal,
pop, and more. More and more people began listening to rock that "for the first time in its history,
large numbers of people began to think that maybe rock and roll really was here to stay; that it could
grow and become an artistic medium that could adapt to its aging audience as well as continue to
attract young fans who would remain the lifeblood of the music" (Stewart 77). Although rock was a
big thing in the 70's, "no other style of music, however, says "1970's" quite as much as disco"

11. Mission San Antonio Analysis
According to one of the friars from Mission Soledad, Native Americans had "a fondness for every
kind of music" (Geiger and Meighan 1976:135). This was not exclusive to this mission as many of
the padres from the Geiger and Meighan reading said that the natives had an inclination toward
music. This enthusiasm for music gave the padres an opportunity to use this to their advantage as
the natives would be more willing to learn and adopt European music compared to other European
ways. But even with this seemingly perfect opportunity, the padres faced many difficulties in simply
teaching the natives even though all of them had studied music and sung in choirs prior to coming to
the New World. They were simply "not professional musicians," according to the padre from
mission San Antonio (Geiger and Meighan 1976:135). Because of this lack of experience or proper
training, many padres were less skilled at teaching and found ... Show more content on

the native's abilities, Duran began to question his notions after seeing some native boys from a
neighboring mission playing European instruments. Because of this observation, he was inspired to
teach the natives from his mission music. But during his first attempt, he was unable to get the
natives to memorize the music, which reinforced his ethnocentric notions and led him to believe that

At the University of Toronto in the laboratory directed by C.D. Creelman, doctoral theses have been

suggested the possible use of the mel scale in composition. L.L. Cuddy has continued her work on
the absolute judgment of pitch (1968, 1970, 1971) at Queen's University showing the importance of
structural relations and musical experience. Theses supervised by Cuddy include studies in interval
recognition (Cohen 1972, Thonigs 1973), tonal memory (Dewar 1974), auditory temporal patterns
(Miller 1974), and tonality in transposed tone sequences (Cohen 1975). Work on absolute pitch also

When discussing the realm of potential applications of music therapy in various populations; a
group that may be initially overlooked would be persons who meet requirements that classify them
as members of the hearing impaired community. This initial negligence to recognize the hearing
impaired community as as population in which music therapy could serve an influential role, could
be due to the instinctual assumption of music as a phenomenon of auditory perception that is
fundamentally accessible only to those without impairments of said perceptive auditory capabilities.
Despite this seemingly natural assumption, it is important to first recognize that music is a

Expanding beyond solely expressive communicative aspects, we can also see that hearing–impaired
individuals oftentimes demonstrate deficiencies in cognition of language, as evidenced by limited
vocabulary, difficulty with word meanings, less appropriate vocabulary, and difficulty with language
based tasks such as reading, writing, and comprehension. (Gfeller & Baumann 1988) This barrier to
social integration can perhaps best be illustrated by a quote from Alice–Ann Darrow, "While visual
impairments are environmental handicaps that keep us from things, hearing impairments are
communication handicaps which keep us from people." These communicative deficits that remain
as barriers to societal integration have shown promising diminished values in studies that apply
music therapy as a means of resolvement. Improvements in both tonal and rhythmic elements of
prosody have been documented, in patients ranging from mild hearing loss to profound hearing loss,
as a result of music–based interventions. (Darrow 1989, Darrow & Cohen 1996, Gfeller 1990). In
addition to linguistic, and communicative barriers towards social integration, emotional and mental
barriers also exist that serve to impede capabilities of interconnectivity. Members of the hearing–

Another one of punk rock's pioneers was the animated Iggy Pop. Iggy began his musical career, or
let me say, his career took off after leaving the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Iggy formed a band
with friends who really had no idea how to play their instruments. This way their lack of musical
knowledge would allow Iggy to incorporate his zany and unorthodox style into their playing style
(History). Iggy was a maniac on stage, cutting himself, screaming at fans, and displaying obscenities
unheard of in that time. Although Iggy never achieved much commercial success back then, Iggy
just released a song "Corruption" which is on the charts.
The punk subculture is often seen as a rebellious group of misguided youngsters who often come
from lower class dwellings and haven't gotten the attention that they needed so they dye their hair,

proletarian aggression and lying desperately about their backgrounds" (History). The flipside to that
is that maybe these youths are expressing their individualism and choose to stray away from

It didn't take long for me to realize College life probably wouldn't continue. Maybe it was the

anything about college, if I couldn't back it up? By returning to college, I was going to get a degree,
proving to myself, I can accomplish and finish something. Hoping my son would see that I wasn't
just talking the talk, also hoping he would be proud of me.

Punk Rock developed sometime between 1974 and 1976 in the United States, United Kingdom, and
Australia. Rooted in garage rock and other forms of what is now known as protopunk music, punk
rock bands were far from your typical mainstream 1970's rock. Punk bands typically use short or
fast–paced songs, with tough and sharp melodies and singing styles, simple composition, and mostly
political, anti–establishment lyrics. Punk embraces a DIY ethic. Many bands self–produced
recordings and distributed them through infomercial commercials. The beginning of New York's

This 2012 Baz Luhrmann version of The Great Gatsby comes to life with its vibrancy and party–like

a knack for blending its contemporary jazz with modern hip hop music to add excitement to the
movie. This 2012 The Great Gatsby follows along with the plot line of the original book better than
the 1974 version, which makes it easier to comprehend background information.
Besides the years that the movies were made, a big difference between the two right away is the fact

more flashbacks to be implemented throughout the film giving viewers a better

24. The 1960s Of The 70s
Ever wonder what it's like to be back in the 70s? Well I certainly do! Every decade has a special
significant and I believe that we should learn about it. In the 1970s, it was a time period filled with
equality fighting, freedom opportunity, change, and war. One interesting fact that I noticed in the
70s is that it is a continuation of the 60s. During this decade, women continued to fight for their
equality and Americans joined the protest against the Vietnam War that was going on during this
time. The 1970s was a time of great change. Some of these great changes had to deal with the
fashion industries, technologies, and even transportation. Not only that, but in the 70s, types of
music 's changed and so did art. For example, there was an increase in Installation Art during this
time period. Even though the 1970s had great changes that improved the world, it also had some of
its downfalls. In the political area, Nixon, as a president during this time, caused destruction. In
addition, during this decade, there were several assassination attempts on presidents and it was also
the beginning on terrorists. It is important for people to learn details about past decades. To truly
understand about the 70s, you must know and learn the history, politics, fashion, music, important
people, and sports. Under politics and history, Richard Nixon would be considered as an important
person. Under Nixon's control, he immediately orders a U.S. invasion of Cambodia. After his

25. The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Great Gatsby is a classic American novel that provides the readers with insights into people's
minds, a unique decade, and the American Dream. With such a classic novel, there are,
understandably, many movies based on it. Movies aren't often accurate representations of the novel.
As such, it is a good experience to analyze the many movies based on a classic novel in order to
better understand the story and the many ways that it could be interpreted. Although every movie
about the Great Gatsby wasn't watched, a comparison of even two to the novel in question may
prove to give deeper insights to the story. Here we shall analyze the main elements of the Great
Gatsby and compare the two movies, from 1974 and 2013, in order to determine ... Show more

Although both movies made the setting similar, the 2013 version did a slightly better job in
representing the novel in that the house was plenty filled with books. Between the East Egg and
West Egg, the East Egg is the proper land of those belonging to old money while West Egg is the
wild land of those belonging to new money. By using narration, the 2013 version showed this off
better. Fitzgerald describes the Valley of Ashes as gray, nondescript, and desolate. The 1974 version
did a better job in that it kept all the color out, showing off how desolate and nondescript it was
supposed to be. Overall though, the 2013 version represented the settings better. Another element to
consider is that of time period accuracy. In the novel, the time is set in the twenties. The music of
the time was mainly jazz, best represented by the 1974 version as it kept strictly to jazz unlike the
2013 version. Further, the dancing included some of the new dances that go with the jazz age as
well as the classic ballroom dancing. As with the music, the 1974 version was more accurate of the
time. Girls of the time were sporting all kinds of different bobs and other short hairstyles. Though
both movies kept the look mostly accurate, the 1974 version did a better job in the dress, attitude,
and such while the 2013 version oversexualized some aspects. An important part of the twenties was
that prohibition was

When people are asked "which is the most rock famous band" or "do you know any rock band",
most people answer AC/DC. Despite being one of the oldest rock bands that are still active, AC/DC
is still famous and well known among generations. The band has been around for more than 40
years and has been globally recognized as one of the most influential band to the pop culture of rock

characteristic in the music: energetic, eccentric, and raw.
The band AC/DC (which stands for alternating current/ direct current) is an australian band that is

30. The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Great Gatsby Reimagined For Today's Society
The Great Gatsby (1925), the first novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, takes place during
prohibition. As depicted in the novel, jazz and alcohol made the culture in the early 20th century
feel alive. The novel communicates how the culture was in New York City and why the main
character Jay Gatsby held parties so he could see his beloved debutante, Daisy Buchanan. But more
importantly, the audience becomes more connected to the film entirely through the music. These
films contained leitmotifs and themes that communicate the human emotions and thoughts behind
each character. In my opinion, The Great Gatsby remains an extremely successful film because of its
music and how it provides clues to the audience as to what obstacles each character faces. Through
themes and leitmotifs, the audience is able to predict what the characters truly desire. Several
movies were created for this novel, but I will focus on two, one released in 1974 and the other in
2013. The two films share similarities, but mostly, they are very different from one another; in that,
the music in the 1974 version possesses the old–fashioned bluesy–type music from the 1920's and
attempts to give the audience a clear view of what music in the early 20th century was actually like
while the one 2013 version contains a more broad and modern musical feel that connects with our
culture and society today. As stated before, the novel, The Great Gatsby, was written

32. Tupac Shakur Language Analysis
There is a right way to speak. Every human being, despite their dialect and or language, knows so
and practices it in their everyday speech with their respective speech community's. The ethnography
of speech can be studied through Dell Hymes's Ways of Speaking, Roman Jakobson's Linguistics
and Poetics, and Dennis Tedlock's Ethnography as Interaction: The Storyteller, the Audience, the
Fieldworker, and the Machine. The ethnography of speaking is most salient in the action of
storytelling. I argue that the phatic function of language is one of the most constant functions in
conversations when the narrator can switch roles to audience, which is prevalent in my recording of
Tupac Amaru Shakur's 1995 deposition. On June 28th, 1995, Tupac Amaru Shakur was tried by the

that rap is not what the judge thinks it is. He does not write gangster rap, he writes poetry and adds a

gestural and verbal. The witness swearing Tupac in sets the tone of this event as one of the most
formal events that could occur in ones life experience. This tone and level of formality continues as
the judge asks for Tupac's name, age, and residence on lines 5 and 7 of the transcription. Despite the
fact that the deposition is and was a formal event, Tupac breaks formality when he leans on his arm.
In this case, he plays the role of audience member; the audience member lost as depicted by
Tedlock. Shaker's tone is more affirmative when he is on defensive mode. This is reaffirmed by his
repetition that is poetic in nature, which are followed by pauses to put emphasis on the statement
being made. Laying on his arm is also a sign of his more defensive mode; most people would not

Gast's use of live footage from the "African Woodstock" of superstars of the music of
the day – James Brown, and BB King – I found particularly effective in portraying the importance
of a culture returning to it's origins. The energy created by performers such as James Brown can do
nothing but up the tempo and build excitement, while the slow, sombre blues solos of BB king
remind us of Ali's daunting task. Gast has been able to provide tempo and excitement to a lot of his
black and white / archival footage and engages us by launching in to exciting music straight after
the slower, almost monotonous – compared with the rest of the film – recounts of historical witness'
such as Norman Mailer and George Plimpton. The music used by Gast is by Ali's definition the
music of "my brothers" or "black man's music" and what better music to
reflect the mood and atmosphere at the pinnacle of Ali's career and breaking free of black America.
Gast began filming 'When We Were Kings' in 1974 after he was hired to go and film the rock
concert that was to be staged alongside the fight. Gast took so much footage that it took him twenty
three years to sort and find backing for his Ali epic, and it all paid of through Gast's achievement at

have pursued his vision until completion, he must have received so much inspiration from

Despite their failure to convert them religiously through music, the natives were left with a Spanish
influence because even after secularization they continued to use European instruments such as:
"Violins, violas," and "guitars" (Ray and Engbeck 1974:16) and most stopped using native
instruments. Because of this neglect, there only remains fragmentary evidence––outside of a few
early ethnographies and written descriptions of events in the California missions––on native music,
while "several hundred European–style musical instruments were being played in California." (Ray

But the musicians and singers were in the worst position because their abilities proved to be nearly
useless outside of the missions––their only realistic option was to stay in the parish churches. They
did not have the resources or supplies to survive in an agricultural environment, and their jobs were
completely unlike those that translated well into this new society––physical labor jobs such as being
a vaquero or simply knowing how to work with animals and agriculture. This lack of easy transition
to the Mexican Californio society may have actually helped solidify Spanish influence over those
involved in mission music. This inability to survive outside of the missions forced them to continue
practicing their abilities in the parish churches, while some of them embraced their situations. This
was most true for the choristers who "persevered in practicing their new religion and remained loyal
to the missions even after freed from the secularization" (Sandos 2004:150). This dedication to the
missions was present over forty years after secularization in San Carlos Borromeo when

Before Nick had met Gatsby, he was invited by one of his chauffeurs to the party he was throwing

wild dancing and laughter. It was said that the whole of New York was there; cars were packed in
the drive five rows deep. People of all social classes were there, not invited per say, instead they
simply showed up. Women wore brightly colored dresses and had odd haircuts. In the 2013 version
of the book, this party is depicted extremely extravagant and up beat. It showed the vast carefree
atmosphere that was described in the book. This version also perpetuated the mystery around who

the 2013 movie that used a mix of modern pop and old jazz. Even Though the music was not correct

Fitzgerald would prefer the more chaotic party depicted in the 2013 movie better, because it

38. The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald
Is it possible to repeat the past? Can one really recreate something that happened years before?
According to Jay Gatsby in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby it is possible; and it has been
done for the book The Great Gatsby itself. The Great Gatsby has been adapted into film many times
by various directors; however, there are two that are considered most popular. The first really
popular The Great Gatsby was Jack Clayton's version that was released in 1974, and more recently
Baz Luhrmann's version that was released in 2013. Since the two movies are based on the same
book, they have some of the same characteristics, but both movies are distinct. The two different
movie directors make the movies distinct by: differences in how the characters are portrayed, the
parties that are thrown, and the overall mood of the films.
In Jack Clayton's 1974 version of Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, most of the characters are more
relaxed and laid back, unlike Baz Luhrmann's, which is full of vibrant and passionate characters. For
example, Clayton's version of Tom Buchanan is more of a solemn and quiet man, where Buchanan
does not represent the bulking, attention–demanding polo player that Fitzgerald wrote about. The
same goes for Tom's mistress Myrtle, she is more reserved and comes off to the viewer as a pathetic
housewife. Additionally, in Clayton's movie adaptation, the main character himself is represented
much differently. Robert Redford, who played Gatsby, took a much flatter and
