The Glory of God
Mirrors and Veils
God is passionate about his glory
Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the end
of the earth, every one who is called by my name, whom I
created for my glory.
(Isaiah 43:6-7)

For my name’s sake I defer my anger, for the sake of my
praise I restrain it for you, that I may not cut you off.
Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tried
you in the furnace of affliction. For my own sake, for my
own sake, I do it, forhow should my name be profaned?
My glory I will not give to another. (Isaiah 48: 9-11)
The Hebrew word for glory is Kabod
Kabod:
Meaning heavy in weight
Exodus 33

12 One day Moses said to the LORD, “You have been telling
me, ‘Take these people up to the Promised Land.’ But you
haven’t told me whom you will send with me. You have told
me, ‘I know you by name, and I look favorably on you.’ 13 If it is
true that you look favorably on me, let me know your ways so
I may understand you more fully and continue to enjoy your
favor. And remember that this nation is your very own
people.”
14 The LORD replied, “I will personally go with you, Moses, and I

will give you rest—everything will be fine for you.”
15 Then Moses said, “If you don’t personally go with us, don’t

make us leave this place. 16 How will anyone know that you
look favorably on me—on me and on your people—if you
don’t go with us? For your presence among us sets your
people and me apart from all other people on the earth.”
17 The LORD replied to Moses, “I will indeed do what you have
asked, for I look favorably on you, and I know you by name.”
18 Moses responded, “Then show me your glorious presence.”
19 The LORD replied, “I will make all my goodness pass before
you, and I will call out my name, Yahweh,[c] before you. For I
will show mercy to anyone I choose, and I will show
compassion to anyone I choose. 20 But you may not look
directly at my face, for no one may see me and
live.” 21 TheLORD continued, “Look, stand near me on this
rock. 22 As my glorious presence passes by, I will hide you in
the crevice of the rock and cover you with my hand until I
have passed by. 23 Then I will remove my hand and let you see
me from behind. But my face will not be seen.

Genesis 34

5 Then    the LORD came down in a cloud and stood there with him;
and he called out his own name, Yahweh.[a] 6 The LORD passed in
front of Moses, calling out,
“Yahweh![b] The LORD!
The God of compassion and mercy!
I am slow to anger
and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.
7 I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations.[c]

I forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin.
But I do not excuse the guilty.
I lay the sins of the parents upon their children and
grandchildren;
the entire family is affected—
even children in the third and fourth generations.”
8 Moses immediately threw himself to the ground and

worshiped.
29 When Moses came down Mount Sinai carrying the two stone
tablets inscribed with the terms of the covenant,[i] he wasn’t
aware that his face had become radiant because he had
spoken to the LORD.30 So when Aaron and the people of Israel
saw the radiance of Moses’ face, they were afraid to come
    near him.
31 But Moses called out to them and asked Aaron and all the

leaders of the community to come over, and he talked with
them. 32 Then all the people of Israel approached him, and
Moses gave them all the instructions the LORD had given him
on Mount Sinai. 33 When Moses finished speaking with
them, he covered his face with a veil.
God expresses himself
        Through his creation
“Then the LORD came down in a cloud”

             Psalm 19:1
The heavens proclaim the glory of God.
  The skies display his craftsmanship.
God expresses himself
              Through his name
“and he called out his own name, Yahweh”

                Nehemiah 9:5
“May your glorious name be praised! May it be
exalted above all blessing and praise!”
God expresses himself
                    Through light
“he wasn’t aware that his face had become radiant
because he had spoken to the LORD”
                    Isaiah 60:1-2
“Arise, Jerusalem! Let your light shine for all to see.
For the glory of the LORD rises to shine on you.
2 Darkness as black as night covers all the nations of

                      the earth,
but the glory of the LORD rises and appears over
                         you.
God expresses himself
                  Through light
“he wasn’t aware that his face had become
radiant because he had spoken to the LORD”
                REVELATION 21:23
23 And the city has no need of sun or moon, for

the glory of God illuminates the city, and the
                 Lamb is its light.
God’s ultimate glory was expressed
         through Jesus Christ
                     John 1:14
14 So the Word became human[a] and made his

home among us. He was full of unfailing love
and faithfulness.[b] And we have seen his
glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.
God’s ultimate glory was expressed
          through Jesus Christ
                   Luke 9
28 About eight days later Jesus took Peter, John, and James up on a
mountain to pray. 29 And as he was praying, the appearance of his face
was transformed, and his clothes became dazzling white.30 Suddenly, two
men, Moses and Elijah, appeared and began talking with Jesus. 31 They
were glorious to see. And they were speaking about his exodus from this
world, which was about to be fulfilled in Jerusalem.
32 Peter and the others had fallen asleep. When they woke up, they saw

Jesus’ glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As Moses and Elijah
were starting to leave, Peter, not even knowing what he was
saying, blurted out, “Master, it’s wonderful for us to be here! Let’s make
three shelters as memorials[f]—one for you, one for Moses, and one for
Elijah.” 34 But even as he was saying this, a cloud overshadowed them, and
terror gripped them as the cloud covered them.
35 Then a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, my Chosen

One.[g] Listen to him.” 36 When the voice finished, Jesus was there alone.
They didn’t tell anyone at that time what they had seen.
The Glory of the New Covenant – 2 Corithians 3
7 The old way,[b] with laws etched in stone, led to death, though it

began with such glory that the people of Israel could not bear to
look at Moses’ face. For his face shone with the glory of
God, even though the brightness was already fading
away. 8 Shouldn’t we expect far greater glory under the new
way, now that the Holy Spirit is giving life? 9 If the old way, which
brings condemnation, was glorious, how much more glorious is
the new way, which makes us right with God! 10 In fact, that first
glory was not glorious at all compared with the overwhelming
glory of the new way. 11 So if the old way, which has been
replaced, was glorious, how much more glorious is the
new, which remains forever!
12 Since this new way gives us such confidence, we can be very
bold. 13 We are not like Moses, who put a veil over his face so the
people of Israel would not see the glory, even though it was
destined to fade away. 14 But the people’s minds were
hardened, and to this day whenever the old covenant is being
read, the same veil covers their minds so they cannot
understand the truth. And this veil can be removed only by
believing in Christ. 15 Yes, even today when they read Moses’
writings, their hearts are covered with that veil, and they do not
understand.
16 But whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken

away. 17 For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the
Lord is, there is freedom. 18 So all of us who have had that veil
removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the
Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we
are changed into his glorious image.

  • 4. Exodus 33 12 One day Moses said to the LORD, “You have been telling me, ‘Take these people up to the Promised Land.’ But you haven’t told me whom you will send with me. You have told me, ‘I know you by name, and I look favorably on you.’ 13 If it is true that you look favorably on me, let me know your ways so I may understand you more fully and continue to enjoy your favor. And remember that this nation is your very own people.” 14 The LORD replied, “I will personally go with you, Moses, and I will give you rest—everything will be fine for you.” 15 Then Moses said, “If you don’t personally go with us, don’t make us leave this place. 16 How will anyone know that you look favorably on me—on me and on your people—if you don’t go with us? For your presence among us sets your people and me apart from all other people on the earth.”
  • 5. 17 The LORD replied to Moses, “I will indeed do what you have asked, for I look favorably on you, and I know you by name.” 18 Moses responded, “Then show me your glorious presence.” 19 The LORD replied, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I will call out my name, Yahweh,[c] before you. For I will show mercy to anyone I choose, and I will show compassion to anyone I choose. 20 But you may not look directly at my face, for no one may see me and live.” 21 TheLORD continued, “Look, stand near me on this rock. 22 As my glorious presence passes by, I will hide you in the crevice of the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will remove my hand and let you see me from behind. But my face will not be seen.

The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness. 7 I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations.[c] I forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But I do not excuse the guilty. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children and grandchildren; the entire family is affected— even children in the third and fourth generations.” 8 Moses immediately threw himself to the ground and worshiped.
  • 8. 29 When Moses came down Mount Sinai carrying the two stone tablets inscribed with the terms of the covenant,[i] he wasn’t aware that his face had become radiant because he had spoken to the LORD.30 So when Aaron and the people of Israel saw the radiance of Moses’ face, they were afraid to come near him. 31 But Moses called out to them and asked Aaron and all the leaders of the community to come over, and he talked with them. 32 Then all the people of Israel approached him, and Moses gave them all the instructions the LORD had given him on Mount Sinai. 33 When Moses finished speaking with them, he covered his face with a veil.

  • 14. God’s ultimate glory was expressed through Jesus Christ Luke 9 28 About eight days later Jesus took Peter, John, and James up on a mountain to pray. 29 And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was transformed, and his clothes became dazzling white.30 Suddenly, two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared and began talking with Jesus. 31 They were glorious to see. And they were speaking about his exodus from this world, which was about to be fulfilled in Jerusalem. 32 Peter and the others had fallen asleep. When they woke up, they saw Jesus’ glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As Moses and Elijah were starting to leave, Peter, not even knowing what he was saying, blurted out, “Master, it’s wonderful for us to be here! Let’s make three shelters as memorials[f]—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 34 But even as he was saying this, a cloud overshadowed them, and terror gripped them as the cloud covered them. 35 Then a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, my Chosen One.[g] Listen to him.” 36 When the voice finished, Jesus was there alone. They didn’t tell anyone at that time what they had seen.
  • 15. The Glory of the New Covenant – 2 Corithians 3 7 The old way,[b] with laws etched in stone, led to death, though it began with such glory that the people of Israel could not bear to look at Moses’ face. For his face shone with the glory of God, even though the brightness was already fading away. 8 Shouldn’t we expect far greater glory under the new way, now that the Holy Spirit is giving life? 9 If the old way, which brings condemnation, was glorious, how much more glorious is the new way, which makes us right with God! 10 In fact, that first glory was not glorious at all compared with the overwhelming glory of the new way. 11 So if the old way, which has been replaced, was glorious, how much more glorious is the new, which remains forever!
  • 16. 12 Since this new way gives us such confidence, we can be very bold. 13 We are not like Moses, who put a veil over his face so the people of Israel would not see the glory, even though it was destined to fade away. 14 But the people’s minds were hardened, and to this day whenever the old covenant is being read, the same veil covers their minds so they cannot understand the truth. And this veil can be removed only by believing in Christ. 15 Yes, even today when they read Moses’ writings, their hearts are covered with that veil, and they do not understand. 16 But whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 17 For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.
