Hebrews 9:24-28. A comparison of the first and second comings of Christ. the hope of the world. His Body, His attitude, His death, His word and teachings, the purpose, His relationship to the lost, the anticipation, those who saw Him, those who confessed Him, the dead raised,
2. HEBREWS 9:24-28 For Christ has not entered
the holy places made with hands, which are
copies of the true, but into heaven itself, now to
appear in the presence of God for us; 25 not
that He should offer Himself often, as the high
priest enters the Most Holy Place every year
with blood of another-- 26 He then would have
had to suffer often since the foundation of the
world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He
has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of
Himself. 27 And as it is appointed for men to die
once, but after this the judgment, 28 so Christ
was offered once to bear the sins of many. To
those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a
second time, apart from sin, for salvation.
3. THE 1ST & 2ND COMINGS OF CHRIST
A.The First and Second Comings of
Christ.
B.What subject could be more
interesting to believers?
C.In these two events are the hope of the
world.
D.Let us contrast these two comings.
4. I. HIS BODY
A. Came in Fleshly Body. John 1:1,14 In the
beginning was the Word, and the Word was
with God, and the Word was God. ….. 14 And
the Word became flesh and dwelt among us,
and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the
only begotten of the Father, full of grace and
truth.
B. Next Time Be In Glorified Body. 1 John
3:2 Beloved, now we are children of God;
and it has not yet been revealed what we
shall be, but we know that when He is
revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall
see Him as He is.
5. II. ATTITUDE
A.Came In Humility. Philippians 2:5-8 Let
this mind be in you which was also in
Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of
God, did not consider it robbery to be
equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no
reputation, taking the form of a
bondservant, and coming in the likeness
of men. 8 And being found in appearance
as a man, He humbled Himself and
became obedient to the point of death,
even the death of the cross.
6. II. ATTITUDE
B. Will Come In Glory.
1. Philippians 2:9-11 Therefore God also has
highly exalted Him and given Him the
name which is above every name, 10 that at
the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
of those in heaven, and of those on earth,
and of those under the earth, 11 and that
every tongue should confess that Jesus
Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the
Father.
2. Matthew 25:31 "When the Son of Man
comes in His glory, and all the holy angels
with Him, then He will sit on the throne of
His glory.
7. III. DEATH
A.He Came To Die For Sinners 1 Corinthians
15:3 For I delivered to you first of all that
which I also received: that Christ died for
our sins according to the Scriptures,
B.Will Not Die Anymore. Romans 6:8-
10 Now if we died with Christ, we believe
that we shall also live with Him, 9 knowing
that Christ, having been raised from the
dead, dies no more. Death no longer has
dominion over Him. 10 For the death that
He died, He died to sin once for all; but the
life that He lives, He lives to God.
8. IV. HIS WORD AND TEACHINGS
A. He Came To Teach The World. John 17:8 For
I have given to them the words which You
have given Me; and they have received them,
and have known surely that I came forth from
You; and they have believed that You sent
Me.
B. Will Come To Judge World By His Word.
John 12:47-48 And if anyone hears My words
and does not believe, I do not judge him; for I
did not come to judge the world but to save
the world. 48 He who rejects Me, and does
not receive My words, has that which judges
him--the word that I have spoken will judge
him in the last day.
9. V. PURPOSE OF HIS COMING
A. Came To Extend Mercy And To Save Sinners. Luke
19:10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to
save that which was lost."
B. Will Come To Reward All According To Their
Works. Matt. 16:24-27 Then Jesus said to His
disciples, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let
him deny himself, and take up his cross, and
follow Me. 25 For whoever desires to save his life
will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake
will find it. 26 For what profit is it to a man if he
gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or
what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
27 For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His
Father with His angels, and then He will reward
each according to his works.
10. VI. RELATIONSHIP TO THE LOST
A. Came To Invite The Lost. Matthew 11:28-30 Come
to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I
will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and
learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart,
and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My
yoke is easy and My burden is light."
B. Next Time Will Drive Lost Away. Matthew 7:21-23
21 "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,'
shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who
does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will
say to Me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not
prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your
name, and done many wonders in Your name?'
23 And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew
you; depart from Me, you who practice
lawlessness!’
11. VII. ANTICIPATION OF HIS COMING
A. World Was Looking and Waiting For Him. Luke 2:25-
32 And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose
name was Simeon, and this man was just and
devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel, and the
Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been
revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not
see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ.
27 So he came by the Spirit into the temple. And
when the parents brought in the Child Jesus, to do
for Him according to the custom of the law, 28 he
took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said:
29 "Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in
peace, According to Your word; 30 For my eyes have
seen Your salvation 31 Which You have prepared
before the face of all peoples, 32 A light to bring
revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of Your
people Israel.“
12. VII. ANTICIPATION OF HIS COMING
B. Few Now Ready and Waiting For Coming.
1. Luke 18:7-8 And shall God not avenge His
own elect who cry out day and night to
Him, though He bears long with them? 8 I
tell you that He will avenge them speedily.
Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes,
will He really find faith on the earth?"
2. 2 Peter 3:3-4 knowing this first: that
scoffers will come in the last days, walking
according to their own lusts, 4 and saying,
"Where is the promise of His coming? For
since the fathers fell asleep, all things
continue as they were from the beginning
of creation.“
13. VIII. SAW JESUS
A. Only A Few Saw Him.
1. John 1:11 He came to His own, and His
own did not receive Him.
2. From scripture we see the farthest Jesus
traveled during his ministry was about 83
miles, from Jerusalem to Bethsaida.
B. All Will See Him-Every Eye. Revelation
1:7 Behold, He is coming with clouds, and
every eye will see Him, even they who
pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth
will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.
14. IX. CONFESSED JESUS
A. Only A Few Confessed Him.
1. Isaiah 53:1-3 Who has believed our report? And
to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender
plant, And as a root out of dry ground. He has no
form or comeliness; And when we see Him, There
is no beauty that we should desire Him. 3 He is
despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows
and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were,
our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did
not esteem Him.
2. John 1:10-11 He was in the world, and the world
was made through Him, and the world did not
know Him. 11 He came to His own, and His own
did not receive Him.
15. IX. CONFESSED JESUS
B.All Confess Him; Some Too Late
Philippians 2:9-11 Therefore God also has
highly exalted Him and given Him the
name which is above every name, 10 that
at the name of Jesus every knee should
bow, of those in heaven, and of those on
earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and
that every tongue should confess that
Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God
the Father.
16. X. DEAD RAISED
A. Only a few raised - Matthew 27:50-53 And Jesus
cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up
His spirit. 51 Then, behold, the veil of the temple
was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth
quaked, and the rocks were split, 52 and the
graves were opened; and many bodies of the
saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53 and
coming out of the graves after His resurrection,
they went into the holy city and appeared to many.
B. All will be raised - John 5:28-29 Do not marvel at
this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in
the graves will hear His voice 29 and come forth--
those who have done good, to the resurrection of
life, and those who have done evil, to the
resurrection of condemnation.
17. What do the first and second
comings mean to you?
A.Have you accepted the salvation that He
offers as a result of His first coming?
1. Have you repented of your sins?
2. Have you confessed Him as Lord of
your life?
3. Have you been baptized for the
remission of your sins?
B.Are you confident that at His second
coming, He will take you back to heaven
with Him?
