A week is a long time in computer ethics
Over the course of a week, numerous news articles reported on various ethical issues arising from the use of technology. Issues discussed included intellectual property theft through peer-to-peer file sharing and concerns over globalization. Other topics included the growing problems of identity theft, computer viruses and hacking, junk mail and spam, censorship and surveillance. The week demonstrated the many challenges posed by technology and how each issue often has countervailing perspectives around issues like freedom of expression, prevention versus cure of computer misuse, and information access versus information control.
The internet of things..perspectives for the Nigerian legal system
The ability for everyday devices to connect with each other and with people is a hot topic.
The Nigerian Communications Commission identified a need for the Nigerian legal system to be aware of present and future possibilities, grey areas and learnings from other countries that have taken proactive steps to prepare for this inevitable future.
Learnings from the EU, USA, China etc are considered. It is comforting to know that no country claims to have its legislation ahead of the tech innovations curve, but the catchup game needs to be at a pace that dragnets the present effectively and constantly repositions for the unknown future.
Regulation should also be smart. Rather than get bogged down regulating aluminium weight for car use, fuel grades for combustion, rather regulate speed (protect lives) and drive regulation by principles that outlive wherever tech wants to go next.
The session was eye-opening for a good number of the aged and candid judges, but it was gladdening to see the mindset: mobile tech is not "that thing", it has to be used, understood and admitted as evidence.
The nerds and more tech savvy should help these 'learned ones' to better embrace tech and help them do their work better for joint good!
Attendee/delegate feedback was candid and NCC hopes to build on this in the coming years.

Explore Virgil’s use of Homer. To think about this, you would begin by identifying several ways in which Virgil uses Homer, from large-scale features like the comparison of Aeneas to Odysseus to small-scale features like the many references to incidents in Homer or to the words of Homer. We will have discussed some of these things in class, and you should be able to find others. Once you have identified several ways in which Virgil used Homer, think about why Virgil used his predecessor poet in those ways. Was it just because Greek literature had such prestige in Virgil’s Rome, or does it go beyond that? For example, are readers invited to compare Aeneas to one or more of Homer’s heroes and, through the comparison, see certain aspects of Aeneas’s character more clearly? Are readers invited to compare Virgil’s style to Homer’s and, through the comparison, understand more clearly what Virgil is trying to do?
Consider the role of the poet/narrator in Homer and Virgil. We have talked about the beginnings of the poems, and the different ways the poets announce their projects and invoke their muses. You may certainly use those discussions, but to write on this topic you will need to get beyond them. Other than at the beginnings, do Homer and Virgil narrate differently? Do their narrators dramatize their own roles to the same degree? Do their narrators comment on the action of the plot to the same degree?
Consider how Virgil creates multiple and complex layers of meaning in The Aeneid. What meanings does The Aeneid have beside the obvious story about the founding of Rome by Aeneas? How does Virgil create these other meanings? Optionally, you may also consider whether the Aeneid is different from Homer's works in this respect. The argument is sometimes made that Homer's works are "all surface," that they do not create multiple and complex layers of meaning. Do you agree with this? If so, explore how Homer and Virgil are different.
Consider questions of visual narrative and the relationships between verbal and visual narratives of the same story. Specifically, examine the set of Aeneid images linked below, and consider these questions. Can the images tell a story independently? How much knowledge of Virgil’s text, or how much knowledge of the story of Aeneas is necessary for making sense of the images? Do the creators of the image seem to have relied heavily on detailed reading of Virgil’s text in creating the images? Do the images seem to de.

Several months ago, Carlos Rico, a marketing manager approached him with an innovative new convenience food product idea combining frozen vegetables, spaetzels (a coated seasoned pasta), and chicken in the same bag. It was designed to compete against other convenience foods such a frozen pizza. Based on preliminary analysis, the new product represented a potential homerun for PFVC with company sales expected to increase by 20 percent and predicted gross margins nearly double the current vegetable offerings. While the potential for this new product was palpable, Richard was a realist given PFVC’s history of new product introductions. The latest was

—a microwaveable soup starter kit introduced by PFVC’s predecessor Anchor Vegetables that failed miserably. Foreign Currency Translation
Our foreign investments and foreign subsidiaries generally report their earnings in their local currencies. We translate our share of their foreign assets and liabilities at exchange rates in effect at the balance sheet dates. We translate our share of their revenues and expenses using average rates during the year. The resulting foreign currency translation adjustments are recorded as a separate component of accumulated other comprehensive income in the accompanying consolidated balance sheets. Gains and losses resulting from exchange-rate changes on transactions denominated in a currency other than the local currency are included in earnings as incurred. We have also entered into foreign currency contracts to minimize our exposure to risk of adverse changes in currency exchange rates. We are subject to foreign exchange risk for foreign currency-denominated transactions, such as debt issued, recognized payables and receivables and forecasted transactions. At December 31, 2007, our foreign currency exposures were principally Euros, British pound sterling, Danish krone and Japanese yen.
