This document outlines Steve Coast's vision for OpenStreetMap, a free and open source map of the world. It discusses how OSM aims to have the most up-to-date, complete and universal map available for free by leveraging a global community to continuously edit and improve the map. In contrast to traditional map vendors that update less frequently, OSM allows for real-time contributions which proved valuable for disaster response mapping in Haiti. While proprietary maps may have greater consistency, OSM trades this off for its open and free nature which can provide maps that are faster, better and cheaper through community participation.
