It is a report made by an
independent group of experts on food security, agricultural ecosystems and nutrition (the International Panel of Experts on Sustainable
Food Systems, IPESfood) and describes how to move from industrial agriculture to an ecological and sustainable agro-food model. It is
a roadmap for the sustainable future of food. This is what we have to say:
Industrial agriculture is a threat to itself
Monocultures are good for one thing: to produce the same in large quantities on a large scale. No matter cows or pigs in mega-stables,
fields with soya, maize, apple or almond trees, monocultures can only be maintained with toxic pesticides, synthetic fertilizers or
antibiotics. In their uniformity they become extremely vulnerable to so-called "stressors" such as pests, diseases or drought. This
high-productivity system has impacts on our agricultural ecosystems: water pollution, climate change, loss of pollinators (such as
bees) (https://www.b2bio.bio/en/noticias-productos-ecologicos/la-desaparicion-de-las-abejas), loss of fertile soils, and a decrease in
insects and other animals that control agricultural pests, greater use of chemicals. In this one-size-fits-all industrial farming model,
chemicals govern the daily work of farmers.
Agricultural experts are raising awareness about the threat that this industrial system of food production poses for itself: it jeopardizes
the ecological base on which it sustains and threatens our long-term food security.
Working with nature, not against it
From Spain to Brazil, from Ghana to China, farmers and farming communities are proving every day that agriculture based on working
with nature, what makes organic farming, rather than against it, it is not only feasible but also the right way. Agroecology-based
models are not only protecting and fostering the ecological basis for agriculture and food production, such as sufficient clean water,
fertile soils and ecosystem services such as pollination, but also provide farmers with higher and more stable incomes.
In these models, farmers and agriculture are much more resilient to the effects of climate change, crop pests and diseases, and also to
market prices. If a farmer has a variety of crops and the market price of a specific crop falls, it is a more acceptable risk and doesn’t
cause a bankruptcy. If it only depends on a crop and things go wrong, economic ruin is almost guaranteed.
