This paper draws on real experience of implementing ISO 50001 and Superior Energy Performance (SEP) in USA and Europe in a variety of sectors: pharmaceutical, automotive, medical device, metals and plastics, universities & ICT. The paper aims to give high-level practical guidance on implementation of these types of energy management system (EnMS)
US DoE has reported substantial extra savings with an EnMS approach. However, there are a number of challenges to: getting started; and making continuous improvement with EnMS.
Firstly, the expression “Energy Management System” means different things to different people. In this paper, we explain what the difference is between EnMS, as meant by ISO 50001/SEP and the general class of Energy Management Information Systems (EMIS), which include monitoring systems and corporate energy/carbon reporting systems.
The next problem is “getting started” with EnMS. In this paper, we first explain identify that there are two key reasons for people to adopt EnMS: These two organizations may start in a different way:
• If the goal is “I want to save more energy in a cost-effective way”, start with an energy review and find ways to visualize how energy is used within the organization.
• If the goal is “I want to get an ISO 50001/SEP certified”, start with a gap assessment.
When some sites in the organization have successfully implemented an EnMS, how do you: ensure that those sites continuously improve; and how do you bring the less advanced sites up to the level of the leading sites?
We believe it is useful to view everything in terms of Energy Management Maturity Models and use this as guidance along the path from start-up through to embedded continuous energy management improvement. Factors that we have found useful in successful rollouts are visualization tools e.g.: Sankey diagrams - show energy flows; Spider diagrams; Dashboards.
In this paper, we will show examples of these visualizations in real situations.

Organizations have become conscious of the environment and the quality management system too. This synergy not only contributes to responsible corporate citizenship but also fosters operational efficiency and resilience in the face of global environmental challenges.
Sugarcane Company’s performance has remained to be one of the challenging facts in the growing companies in Kenya today. The delays in harvesting operations are attributed to uncoordinated and unpredictable harvesting and transport schedules; and inefficiencies in mill operations. Therefore, the main aim of the study is to determine the influence of Sustainability Management Systems CSR on firm performance of selected sugarcane companies in Kenya. The study is guided by Corporate Social Performance Theory. This study used ex- post facto research design. Ex- post facto research design determines and reports the way things are. The target population was 528 employees. This study therefore sampled 228 respondents. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 10 managers, 24 supervisors, 38 accountants and 156 clerks from the 7 sugarcane companies because they have specific information concerning the effects of corporate social responsibility practice on firm performance of selected sugarcane companies in Kenya. Pilot study was done in order to test for validity and reliability of the research tools. The pilot study was done in Trans-Mara Sugar Company found in rift Valley region of Kenya. For inferential statistics, correlation and multiple regression was used for comparative analysis between frequencies of corporate social responsibility practice on firm performance. The study findings indicated that sustainability management systems have an effect on firm performance. The government will use this study in establishing policies that would ensure improvement in firm performance of sugarcane processing firms among other firms in Kenya. The study recommends that the companies should encourage sustainability management systems since sustainable management systems is an important mechanism for improving corporate sustainability performance. It can generate business value through measurement and management of sustainability risks and opportunities. The study recommends further researchers to study on corporate social responsibility strategy and financial performance of firms in Kenya which the study didn’t cover.
BS 99001 Quality Management in the Built Environment sector.pdfdemingcertificationa
Quality management ensures that an organization, product or service consistently functions well. It has four main components: quality planning, quality assurance, quality control and quality improvement. Quality management is focused not only on product and service quality, but also on the means to achieve it. Quality management, therefore, uses quality assurance and control of processes as well as products to achieve more consistent quality. Quality control is also part of quality management. What a customer wants and is willing to pay for it, determines quality. It is a written or unwritten commitment to a known or unknown consumer in the market. Quality can be defined as how well the product performs its intended function.
Latter-day growing regulatory environment has emerged organizations to deal with managing of several compliance
frameworks simultaneously. The fulfilment of legal obligations is only one factor that shove the organizations to
robust their management systems. A management system is the framework of processes and procedures used to
ensure that an organization can fulfill all tasks required to achieve its objectives.

Due to the current instability in the business world, organizations should be able to anticipate changes and have coherent responses at hand to effective manage risks, create value, build good relations, increase profit and improve competitive positioning.
A report titled Exploring Strategic Risk issued in 2013 for Forbes Insights by Deloitte, contains some very important conclusions for the business community. 300 executives from around the world were interviewed for the study, in an attempt to find out their vision of the risk strategy and current changes and analysing how organizations should face these new challenges.
Sometimes it is difficult to link risks to a specific financial impact and not all data are pertinent to the evaluation of emerging risks. That's why companies have to be aware of internal risks and manage them well in order to be able to manage external risks and invest into strategic assets such as human capital, clients and innovation.
This insight explains the case of the financial services as the sector that less trust generates due to its short-sightedness, lack of values and lack of professional education that resulted in corruption and bad practices, which compromised the financial sector.
The report A Crisis of Culture: Valuing Ethics and Knowledge in Financial Services examines the role of integrity and knowledge in restoring culture in the financial services industry. The conclusions appear in the full version of this document.
The financial industry is just one example in the wider panorama. Lack of values is widespread and creates significant risks. Bad practices trigger problems such as loss of profit, loss of reputation and even loss of shareholders, clients and employees.
The crisis, as well as the arrival of new technologies, urges companies to maintain their good practices and emphasize aspects as ethics, leadership, commitment, performance, transparency and sustainability.
The digital revolution and social networks encourage companies to be more transparent: companies meet their promises and obligations, deliver a coherent dialogue and improve the relationship with their stakeholders.
Application of values raises the possibility of good results and profits for companies through improvement of their reputation and business as well as optimization of resources. This certainly creates competitive advantages, establishes a strong cultural connection and improves employees’ motivation.
Before taking any decision, an institution should keep in mind the fact that it needs implicit and explicit public approval. Good business management implies risk management, creating a climate of trust, good will, credibility, social commitment and empathy between stakeholders and the company.

The objective of this work is to contribute to valorization de Nephelium lappaceum by the characterization of kinetics of drying of seeds of Nephelium lappaceum. The seeds were dehydrated until a constant mass respectively in a drying oven and a microwawe oven. The temperatures and the powers of drying are respectively: 50, 60 and 70°C and 140, 280 and 420 W. The results show that the curves of drying of seeds of Nephelium lappaceum do not present a phase of constant kinetics. The coefficients of diffusion vary between 2.09.10-8 to 2.98. 10-8m-2/s in the interval of 50°C at 70°C and between 4.83×10-07 at 9.04×10-07 m-8/s for the powers going of 140 W with 420 W the relation between Arrhenius and a value of energy of activation of 16.49 kJ. mol-1 expressed the effect of the temperature on effective diffusivity.

"Understanding the Carbon Cycle: Processes, Human Impacts, and Strategies for...MMariSelvam4
The carbon cycle is a critical component of Earth's environmental system, governing the movement and transformation of carbon through various reservoirs, including the atmosphere, oceans, soil, and living organisms. This complex cycle involves several key processes such as photosynthesis, respiration, decomposition, and carbon sequestration, each contributing to the regulation of carbon levels on the planet.
Human activities, particularly fossil fuel combustion and deforestation, have significantly altered the natural carbon cycle, leading to increased atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations and driving climate change. Understanding the intricacies of the carbon cycle is essential for assessing the impacts of these changes and developing effective mitigation strategies.
By studying the carbon cycle, scientists can identify carbon sources and sinks, measure carbon fluxes, and predict future trends. This knowledge is crucial for crafting policies aimed at reducing carbon emissions, enhancing carbon storage, and promoting sustainable practices. The carbon cycle's interplay with climate systems, ecosystems, and human activities underscores its importance in maintaining a stable and healthy planet.
In-depth exploration of the carbon cycle reveals the delicate balance required to sustain life and the urgent need to address anthropogenic influences. Through research, education, and policy, we can work towards restoring equilibrium in the carbon cycle and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.

The management of EHS has
changed extensively over recent
decades. Initially strongly driven
by the complex topic of compliance
and followed at local levels,
EHS management has evolved
towards more centralized models
with clear objectives. Today’s
EHS management focuses
on satisfying stakeholder
expectations, preserving brand
value as well as tracking and
improving performance.
EHS is becoming a fundamental
element of today’s business
and this has changed the way
companies approach this area.
EHS and sustainability leaders
are setting ambitious targets and
making commitments to top level
management. The number of staff
dedicated to EHS functions has
increased, policies and processes
have been strengthened and
reporting systems have been
put in place to track and improve
performance.
From decentralized models aimed
at addressing the risks and costs
associated with direct operations,
to very centralized models for
reporting purposes, different

However, increasingly EHS is used

Moreover, what is the best way to

Arcadis analyzed the EHS functions
of 40 multinational companies in
various sectors (Conglomerates,
Oil and Gas, Chemicals,
Pharmaceuticals and Automotive).
We asked three main questions:
• Where stands the EHS function
in its transformation journey
towards more value creation for
your organization?
• How has your organization

• What does a best in class EHS

EHS strategy.
It appears that almost half (47%)
of companies on our panel are
managing EHS for the value it
brings and even 29% are doing it to
take a strategic advantage.
However, one multinational
corporation in four still manages
EHS in a reactive manner.
4. We analyzed the correlation
between the level of organisation
and the EHS mission, and level
of ambition for EHS strategies.
It appears that companies led
by a risk management approach
are mostly using decentralized
organisation models to directly and
effectively fit with local regulations.
For others who are focused on the
value EHS brings to the business,
more centralized and intermediate
models are used, with policies
set-up at corporate level and
implementation embedded into
business operations.

WHAT IS BEST IN CLASS?
Best in class EHS functions are
integrated models, embedded into
each level and operation in the
business. An organisation includes
the formal structure, coordination
and control systems aimed at
implementing a strategy.
With insight gained from working
at both senior executive and
operational levels with large
multinational corporations,
we have determined there are
generally five key characteristics of
high performing EHS functions.
5. Risk Management
and Performance
Improvement
1. Vision and commitment
2. Processes and
standardization
3. Resources allocation
and competences
4. Results: KPIs, data
and analytics
5. Stakeholder dialogue
1. Have a global and consistent
approach, with a clear strategy
and commitment from senior
management
2. Standardize core EHS processes
and embed EHS aspects into
business operations and other
departments
The environmental compliance
and performance management
is deeply interconnected to every
other part of businesses.
3. Allocate resources and develop
competences
All companies analyzed have
corporate or centralized
staff dedicated to tracking,
supporting or maintaining
the environmental regulatory
compliance.

4. Focus on results:
Data, analytics, KPIs setting
and reporting should serve the
unique purpose of performance
improvement. In addition
to quantitative information
reporting, it is key to promote
a culture of excellence by
tracking initiatives, identifying
best practices and rolling
out those best practices to
improve business and financial
confidence.
5. Engage dialogue and
communication for both
internal and external
stakeholders
Having a direct dialogue with
stakeholders ensures a level
of understanding of their
expectations, and provides clear
communication and assurance of
EHS policies and results. Getting
the buy-in of all employees on
EHS aspects can also improve
the entire company culture.

6. CASE STUDY: CONGLOMERATES SECTOR
CASE STUDY: OILAND GAS SECTOR
This global corporation in the
appliance sector has been
undergoing a rapid transformation
over the past decade, including
major acquisitions in emerging
countries. An increase of serious
incidents as well as overruns of
environmental costs demand to
take a fresh look at EHS.
Arcadis supported it to implement
an integrated environmental,
health and safety risk diagnosis.
The preparation included
stakeholders’ alignment and
vision definition, the design and
planning of an integrated program,
and implementation including
an environmental management
information system. This integrated
program meets business
requirements as well as functional
and technical to best fit with the
existing organisation.
Operating a global portfolio means
managing a wide range of regional
risks related to EHS and security.
Some jurisdictions have clear,
well-understood, established,
efficient, and fair regulatory
frameworks, while others
present a wide variety of risks.
Arcadis completed a successful
project to identify overarching
EHS challenges faced by a global
operating company, with diverse
portfolios of facilities and develop
operating guidelines.
Effective EHS operating guidelines
provide the organization with a
framework that clearly defines
consistent expectations for all
facilities. Based on the guidelines,
facility personnel can identify
and manage EHS risks unique to
their facility and region, enabling
them to develop local policies
and procedures that address and
mitigate the risks while remaining
consistent with the organization’s
overarching EHS and compliance
strategy.
