3. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Through ages humans have been searching for a way to mask or
remove perceived unpleasant odors or to create a pleasant ambiance
due to the presence of perceived nice smell. Air fresheners or air care
products are products that deliver ambient fragrance substances, which
serve to mask or remove perceived unpleasant odors or to create a
pleasant ambiance due to the presence of perceived nice smells (EC,
2010; Cleanright.eu, 2020).
4. Maintaining a pleasant, fresh scent is one of the keys to keeping
the environment feeling clean and welcoming. While regular
cleaning can help to eliminate odors and keep surrounding
smelling clean, it’s not always enough. Organic and natural air
freshener can also be used to extend the fresh and clean feeling of
a certain area by eliminating any lingering odors and enhancing
the scent. As more and more people become conscious of their
environmental impact, they are choosing air fresheners made with
natural ingredients.
5. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This study will be conducted to determine the
feasibility of oregano extract and Lemon Juice
as Air Freshener Spray.
6. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Specifically, this study will answer the following questions:
1. Which treatment/s of oregano and lemon air freshener is acceptable to be used?
2. What is the average time of each treatment/s to freshen the air?
3. Is there a significant difference between the different level of the treatment/s of
oregano and lemon air freshener and controlled treatment.
8. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The results of this study will be beneficial to the following:
Household Owners – This study will be beneficial to the household owners because
this can help them give another option or affordable way to improve the smell of the
home or office and can also be used to remove foul odors’.
Teachers – This study will be beneficial to the teachers because this scent can be used
as a natural and subtle way to control the classroom environment, improve attention
and focus, and keep behaviors at school.
9. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
Students - This study will be beneficial to the students because these
pleasant fragrances found in air fresheners can provide additional
benefits, including positive impacts on mood, stress reduction, and
improved memory and sleep.
Car Drivers– This study will be beneficial to the car drivers because
this smell of a pleasant fragrance can help to improve the mood and
can feel better when driving in the car or sitting in traffic.
10. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
Consumers- This study will be beneficial to the consumers because
these emerging consumers demand innovation in air fresheners to
address broader indoor air quality needs and improve well-being and
mood.
Municipal Stuff- This study will be beneficial to the municipal staff
because it can help employees concentrate on the task and boost
productivity.
11. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
Future Researchers – This study will be beneficial to future
researchers because the outcome of the study is beneficial to the
future researchers. This study may be one of the bases that a new
theory in learning will use.
13. The importance of having fresh air having fresh
Air fresheners contain various chemicals that may or may
not be harmful to human health and the environment. These
products are widely used in different settings such as homes,
schools, offices, and hospitals with ignorance of their real
ingredients and their relative health effects. Thus, this
preliminary study was carried out to identify the presence of
different compounds in spray air fresheners that were not
disclosed on the product’s label.
14. Four different brands of spray air fresheners were selected randomly
from a local store, in which two were of mid to high cost and the
remaining two of low cost. The samples were analyzed using gas
chromatography/mass spectrometry headspace, in which single
components of the samples were identified by the mass spectrometry
detector. The results were shown as a chromatogram of several peaks,
each representing different compounds. The chemicals found in the
samples include; lilial, galaxies, benzene methanol, musk ketone,
butylated hydroxytoluene, and linalool. These chemicals may cause
irritation and other health problems
15. Lemon juice has pleasant aroma
Fruit extracts that are rich in antioxidants such as lemon
juice were used as an effective agent in decreasing
intracellular ROS concentration and protecting lipid, DNA
and mitochondrial functionality from the damage induced by
free radicals. Lemon fruit is the most important field crop as
it can be used in a wide array of functions. For example,
fresh consumption, producing juicing, decorating dishes,
culinary products, preservatives to maintain food stability.
16. Moreover, it is showing various health benefits, such as anticancer
effect, antimicrobial effect, lipid-lowering effect, protective effect
against cardiovascular diseases and antifungal activity. Furthermore, it
is utilised for the treatment of stomach problems, constipation, teeth
problems, memory loss, fever, bleeding, rheumatism, burns, breathing
disorders, cholera, atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, treating liver
ailments, promotes digestion and prevent urinary tract infections. In
addition, there are much more applications such as cleaning agents and
for hair and skin care. Lemon juice has several important chemical
components with therapeutic features such as citric acid (Vitamin C, 2-
hydroxy-1,2,3-propane tricarboxylic acid).
17. How oregano extract provides fresh air
Some ingredients of plant origin possess both antioxidant and
bacteriostatic properties. If used in the food industry, they can inhibit
microbiological and oxidative damage, thus increasing the shelf life of
meat products. Oregano extract is one of such substances, which means
that it can be used as an antioxidant and preservative. Therefore, the study
of this plant has a significant theoretical and practical potential for the
food industry. Oregano extract, the induction period of oxidative stability
was twice as long as for the control sample and the sample with
antioxidants. In addition, oregano inhibited the growth of aerobic and
anaerobic microorganisms (Oleynikov 2020).
19. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapter describes the research method, research design, respondents
of the study, data gathering procedure, research instrument, data analysis
and statistical tools used in the study. The purpose of this study is to
determine the feasibility of oregano (Origanum vulgare) and lemon juice
(Citrus limon) as air freshener spray.
20. RESEARCH DESIGN
Experimental Research. This research design is based on the scientific
method called experiment with a procedure of gathering data under a
controlled or manipulated environment. It is also known as true
experimental design since it applies treatment and manipulation more
extensively compared to quasi experimental design. Random
assignment of subjects or participants into treatment and control group
is done increasing the validity of the study. Experimental research,
therefore, attempts to affect a certain variable by directly manipulating
the independent variable.
21. RESEARCH METHOD
The researcher will employ experimental research,
experimental research means planning a set of procedures
to investigate a relationship between variables. To design a
controlled experiment, one need a testable hypothesis and
at least one independent variable that can be precisely
manipulated. It describes the present phenomena
underlying the sensory evaluation by the respondents.
