Icarus and his father Daedalus were trapped on the island of Crete. Daedalus crafted wings out of wax for himself and Icarus so they could escape by flying over the sea. Despite warnings from his father, Icarus flew too close to the sun which caused the wax in his wings to melt, sending him plunging to his death in the sea. The poem Musee Des Beaux Arts by W.H. Auden discusses how suffering and tragedy often goes unnoticed, as depicted in Bruegel's painting of Icarus's fall, where the farmers continue working unaware of Icarus drowning.
