The presentation was submitted to the Department of English at M.K. Bhavnagar University for Riddhi's semester 1 course.
This study examined risk factors for BK polyomavirus nephritis (BKN) in renal transplant recipients. The researchers analyzed 286 kidney transplants performed between 1999-2001. They identified 9 cases of BKN and 62 cases of acute rejection. Contrary to previous studies, none of the BKN cases were preceded by acute rejection episodes. BKN patients had higher tacrolimus levels and were more likely to be white males. The findings suggest higher tacrolimus exposure, rather than acute rejection, increases risk of BKN.
