2. Hurricane Irene formed in the southern
Atlantic Ocean on August 24th, and was
the 8th storm of the 2011 hurricane season.
On August 25th, the storm struck the
Bahamas, weakened down to a Category
1, before heading to the states.
3. Americans frequently bordered up their homes with plywood
and sandbags, and highways going East became packed with
cars loaded with valuable possessions and whole family’s. For
the first time in years, Northern Atlantic States needed to
evacuate, because a Hurricane was going to strike for the first
time in over 15 years.
4. On August 27th, 2011, Irene struck the Southeast US.
Over the next 2 days, Irene traveled up the coastline all
the way to Canada. The main destruction wasn’t cause
mostly by wind, but by very rainy conditions that caused
major floods in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut,
Vermont, and Canada just to name a few.
5. Irene was the 7th most costly hurricane in U.S. history,
coming at a hefty price of 15.6 billion dollars. In 2013,
most of the area has been cleaned of the destruction,
and people were able to get back on their feet until
October of 2012, when an even more deadly hurricane
hit the Northeast, but that’s a different story.
